If you are one of those riders holding on for dear life the trick to surviving is to organise another echelon as soon as its obvious that this is a decisive moment. Swing out into the wind making it obvious that now is the time to join you,the experienced guys will quickly form a working group but be aware that as soon as you get into striking distance of the first group all loyalty will disappear and someone will try to bridge across potentially breaking up your chasing group. Its now time to decide to chase the malcontent and ditch your new found teammates or keep working to catch the front group or limit the losses.
