Nice photos… In the US, if an animal got that close to us we’d assume it had rabies. Not so in AUS?

I’m sure he appreciated the h20.

Jeremy February 7, 2009 at 11:23 pm

No rabies problem here mate ;-).

MrBig February 8, 2009 at 9:58 am

In the US there’s a good chance that the animal has a gang affiliation and it’ll put a cap in yo’ ass!

In Sicily we eat lots of horses..

cee February 8, 2009 at 1:38 pm

So it’s like 40C (105F) and yet, people will still cycle. What is up with that? It’s the same here in the great ol’ U.S. state of Texas, but I’ve nevr understood it. Nice pix.

They’re a tough breed here in Aus. Tougher than I am…

NilxsUK February 12, 2009 at 5:13 am

In England we eat a lot of Sicilians!

If people stopped cycling (or whatever) when the temp went over 40C, we’d do nothing for a large part of the year, Cee. Personally, I’d go with the kangaroo’s idea of leisure activity, but then that’s just me. The only bike I’ve ridden in a while is a stationary exercise one :\ One of these days I aspire to dig the real one back out again, once I’m not likely to get the chorus of a Queen song wherever I go…

BTW it does depend on which part of the country you’re in. We go from tropical far north queensland, down to subarctic tasmania. You can pick your temperature zone…

The koala shots were taken just East of the city of Adelaide in South Australia where I live. That day was well over 40C, but very little humidity, so cycling is not all that bad!! The koala is wild, but used to vehicles etc – it apparently literally ‘flagged’ the riders down looking for a drink. This is very unusual, as they normally get all the fluid they need from the leaves of the Manna Gum which grows in the area – it has been a very hot, long summer

the koala in the tub of water photo was taken in the outskirts of Melbourne, where I live. It was 45C that day and apparently it just walked into this family’s home and they figured it wanted to cool down and have a drink.

That is so random, I wonder if they were doctored.

The Roo set is incomplete.
A shark eats it in the final frames.

fortunately for us no rabies in Australia

With the record high temperatures in Oz this year, especially in the south and southeast, it seems animals have been a bit more desperate to cool down. This little koala must have been bad off with the heat. They can sleep through anything and during the day, usually do.

Elizabeth February 17, 2009 at 2:07 am

No rabies! That’s why any animal coming into Oz has a six month Quarantine.

No bringing Fido along for that family summer vacation. He’ll be sitting in Quarantine.

I had a friend that visited Australia – and the desert, spent some time with the Natives. He said it is definitely a country with many climates!

I was listening to the radio at the time that Koala was getting drinks from the cyclists. One of the cyclists was an announcer from the local station and apparently the Koala was literally flagging down cyclists for drinks! He walked straight up, grabbed a leg and made it pretty clear the water bottle was what he wanted.

Koalas have some big claws by the way, but these guys thought the scratches were secondary to the wonder of having a wild animal approach them for a drink.

I can’t believe how much good information is posted on this site and 99% of the comments are on these ridiculous koalas and kangaroos!

Matt February 17, 2009 at 2:04 pm

Hahaha! Awesome reference to one of my favorite songs CrystalsQuest! …but they really do make the Rockin’ World go ‘Round!

Anyhow, I don’t envy you guys the heat at all! Of course right now in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula we won’t regularly see temperatures above freezing until mid March!

I was in the area affected by the bush fires and saw kangaroo and koala charred corpses that littered the side of the highway. These poor animals had nowhere to go, fled to the roads and came up to a dead end of fire.

If everyone here just clicks on a google ad on this page and leaves a “donation” we could at least help the people who affected by this. I think it’s a great idea. Doesn’t cost us a dime and it goes to a great cause!

Tammy February 19, 2009 at 9:16 am

I was in Kinglake last week as well and there were dead kangaroos everywhere on the side of the road.

The people who survived aren’t much better off. Thanks for donating all your google adsense dollars. There are thousands of people who desperately need it

Funny thing is…Koala means ‘no water’ in an Indigenous Australian language.

Kiwi February 22, 2009 at 9:02 am

Yo! duh. March 10, 2010 at 2:38 am

Here in the mountains of West Virginia USA, its cold. I dream of 40C days to ride in!
Heat has never bothered me, but the cold can make my knees ache.

Cheers.
