Thanks to your link in today's The Rider post I only just discovered this great article. I was privileged to work with Sharon at the 2008 Tour of Wellington and am proud to call this talented woman my friend. Thanks for giving Sharon a feature like this - she deserves high praise.

Brad - my thoughts exactly. I was thinking about it and another thing that Sharon has done is she's figured out exactly what she's good at, worked hard on it, and set her goals based on those things. One of the most important things you need to know about yourself is what you're good at and what you're not. If you don't, you'll be mediocre at everything and therefore never have success an anything.

I also know Sharon reasonably well, have ridden with her quite a bit and can testify to her climbing strength etc. One of the things that people should understand is that Sharon's approach is about much more than cramming in more miles. She is constantly trying to find better ways to do things: improving skills, experimenting with equipment, learning tactics. I think one of the advantages of changing sports is that you realise that the physical is one part but the skills/intellectual component is a massive factor. Application is about much more than getting out there and training in the rain - you have to practice and work on the things you are not good at as well as reinforcing your strengths.

That is pretty inspirational. I did a compound tib-fib 3 years ago and it still aches every day. How these athletes get back on their bikes after such major injuries, in spite of the pain, and still compete like demons is beyond me. They have some hardcore courage and drive happening.

Wow - unreal! I doubt I could ever do something like what Sharon has done, but that's exactly what separates me from people like her!
