Home Remedies

March 28, 2009

ph_coldI’ve been fighting off a cold all week and I’m out of my usual magic potion.  I swear by this stuff that I get sent to me from Canada called ColdFX. I hardly ever get sick if I start taking this stuff as soon as I feel a cold coming on. It’s basically pharmaceutical grade ginseng in pill form.

I posted a Tweet on Twitter asking what works for others.  Here’s a few responses I got:

carlymwIcon_lock@cyclingtips a multivitamin & a double dose of echinacea is my best trick for heading off a cold.

dncresearch@cyclingtips A raw garlic sandwich. Friend of mine swears by them; says he eats one when he feels a cold coming on & never gets sick.

rabbitmeg@cyclingtips horseraddish and garlic. Any brand head off a cold for me.

PadyszIcon_lock@cyclingtips eat a bunch of oranges(literally) and drink tons of water! Sleep lots of it works majic.

pierrepino@cyclingtips Take heaps of Vitamin C, megadoses 5000MG. I’m not a doctor but this works for me. It either gets rid of it or minimises it.

tony_1973@cyclingtips hot water+half a lemon+honey (+whisky if not riding/driving), have 2 of those, then suck on the lemon rind to clear nose :D

Any one else have good suggestions on how to kick a cold?

When colds become a risk - when everyone at the office is sick / the weather gets colder / training load increases / throat becomes a little scratchy - I find taking Olive Leaf Extract morning and night is a very effective preventative measure.

This is the one to go for: http://www.olea.com.au/

Hydrate. If you were sick and in hospital, pretty much no matter what, they would constantly hydrate you.

You might not have saline at home but I would recommend drinking, drinking and drinking. I aim for at least 3 litres extra than what I would normally drink in a day, although I am happy once I am needing to go to the loo every hour or so.

Remember to add salt though. Increased fluid intake will dilute your bodies sodium levels; but also the salt will actually increase the rate by which your body will absorb the water. I just add a couple of shakes from the table salt, no need to alter the flavour of the water with salt, just make sure to add some.

Natural ingredients, mainly Vitamin C that gives you an awesome 3-4 hour pick-me-up, great stuff, especially when combined with Cold FX.

Another great Canadian cold remedy is Neocitran, I look forward to getting sick to justify this warm, lemony, delicious hot beverage!

I would not recommend doing what I did a couple of weeks back: go out and ride 100 hilly km, in the rain and wind from the cyclone off QLD. I ended up with Sinusitis and two days laid up in bad for my stupidity.

Load up with vitamin C. Taking about 5000mg a day works for me
