SKCC Club Champs

April 9, 2009

St Kilda Cycling Club put on their yearly criterium club championship today.  As always it was a great event. A big thank you goes out to all the volunteers and SKCC committee for a great season of racing and fun.

Here in Australia it’s now the end of crit season and the start of road season.  It never stops – I love it.  A cyclist’s paradise.   Since this is the last crit for the next while I thought I’d bring out the helmet cam one last time.  Unfortunately I didn’t expect to wind up in a break for 45mins and the angle of the cam wasn’t good with my head low down the whole time.  Unlike my last helmet cam video, this time I was racing, not gallivanting up and down the peloton getting good shots. Not ideal, but you get the idea.

If you’re interested, the music is by Animal Collective (My Girls).   The helmet cam I’m using is the GoPro.  Amazing camera – especially for the pricetag of less than $200.  I could barely feel it on the top of my head (see pic below). It takes 2 AAA batteries that last about 3hrs and a 4GB memory card record almost 2hrs of video.

Great video mate, really liked the out of the saddle footage! I miss the crits already!
  • Pete
Great footage, haven't raced since March last year when I had a crash, makes me want to get back into it!
  • jens
Great video. You should bring it to the Hell Ride or thursday morning 6am group.
  • James B
I haven't had the chance to race all year and seeing this makes me realise how much I miss being in the bunch. Great stuff Wade. Agree with CJ, you did make him look surprisingly smooth and good on the bike!!
  • too funny....when I was editing the video I was getting a soar neck because I was constantly looking up thinking that it would change the camera angle!
  • Craig Johnson
F@#king AWESOME footage Wade... I was reliving every moment of that race as I was watching your video! Your snazzy editing even made my pox efforts look good - Thanx big fella!

Spewing on the dodgy camera angle tho - I spent the whole video trying to look up!
  • Glen
These helmet cam videos you've been doing have gotten me so motivated to race again! I can't wait! Thanks!
  • Carson
What are the chances you'll be doing any track racing with the helmet cam on Wade? I'd love to see that
  • Jenny
Would be great if you could race some of the bigger women's races with the WadeCam!
  • Dave
I see you've created a group on Vimeo called "Cycling Helmet Cams". I've just joined this group and added my video. It's mountain bike, but what the hell.
Vimeo's quality is much better than youtube. I'm glad you figured this out before you got too far...
  • andy
love it! You don't see many helmet cameras in road races. Great to see someone is doing it!
  • Mitch
What kind of helmet cam is that? Awesome footage! I gotta get me one of those. Too bad about the camera angle.
  • Lee
Awesome work Wade, you even got me some airtime! I wish I could ride in a straight line though.
  • Tommy P
Wade, well done for taking footage. The circuit looks sooo narrow on camera. I must say though that the club champs after-party hurt more than the actual race.. good times!
  • yeah, the fat dude rocking/running/rubbing what looked to be a spinergy 4 spoke on the rear is Tristan Priem. Google him. Back in his day he won races that we only read about on cyclingnews.
  • hughesy
Great video. Who was the dude rocking/running/rubbing what looked to be a spinergy 4 spoke on the rear. I would have thought that using rims like this was not allowed in any group racing.
  • Awesome Wade - so cool that you put the effort into covering this for everyone to see - look fwd to next season - but for now - road!
