Bucket List

Every time I hear of a young healthy athlete tragically falling over dead from some undiagnosed condition it makes me think of my own mortality.  Apparently “fit” doesn’t necessarily equate to “healthy”.   I spend many hours a day making sure I’m both fit and healthy.  It’s a top priority in my life.  You can do many things to gauge your fitness (racing, power testing, HR monitoring) but it’s not so easy to gauge your health. There could always be some dormant time bomb ticking away.

Speaking of happy Friday thoughts I thought I’d make a bucket list of all the things I’d like to do in cycling in case I suddenly drop dead one day on Beach Road.  You never know.  Putting pen to paper really made me think about what’s important to my cycling and why I do this.  I bet Steve Larsen isn’t remembered by the people who care about him by his race results. He’ll be remembered for what he was as a father, husband, man and what he gave back to the sports he loved so much.

My cycling bucket list:

  1. Bike tour through Portugal -> Spain -> France -> Switzerland -> Germany -> Italy for 4 months with my wife.   If I didn’t put this at #1 I’d be dead tomorrow  ;-)
  2. Bike tour through England -> Scotland -> Ireland with my wife.  6 weeks would be fine. Definitely in summer
  3. Spend 3 weeks in July in a campervan with my mates riding parts of the Tour de France stages and watching the race
  4. Do the bike trip to Vietnam with my mates that we postponed last February because we were all worried about our jobs
  5. Mountain bike in New Zealand. Rotorua and on the South Island
  6. Do the Trans Alps mountain bike race
  7. Go for a ride with Jens Voigt (on one of his easy rest days)
  8. Ride the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Flanders (will rent a bike and take out insurance for this)
  9. Go to the Tour de France with a press pass and blog about all the pro’s cycling tips
  10. Ride the Grand Fondo Sportful in Feltre, Italy.  216km, 17,700 of climbing, and a squillion cyclists

Sure a solo or sprint victory at Sandown kermesse would be nice, but no one will remember by the next Tuesday anyway.

I think every single one of these things is achievable and will get done in my lifetime.   I may need a little help convincing Jens to go for a ride with me, but I’m sure I’ll get there.

read with interest your "bucket list".

need a driver for this "tdf"as i arrive on 1/6/09 and as 12th prefer a backup to riding all without support as i have done previous years!

2 strong riders mean they have the op to ride as well!

11 tdf alone has allowed me great contact & great personal contacts but before quitting europe want to see how the other 99.9% live!

challenge for confident race/riders, please no whimps as i already met most of the excuses!
  • When you or any of you bloggers come to Portugal, send me an email I'll be glad to show you some of the beautiful places we have here.

  • So true! When I got Glandular Fever five months ago I was probably the fittest I have ever been in my life. Then the lurgy hit! So now I'm unfit but hopefully on my way to good health again. May I adopt the list for once I'm fit AND healthy again ... please? All of it!!! Especially #7!
  • I'd really like to go for a ride with Levi and actually be able to keep up with him.

My list includes the Paris Brest Paris coming up again in 2011 and also a credit card tour of Tasmania with 2 or 3 good friends.
Stelvio is one of those climbs that has so far been missed, so that's on the cards too.

One of mine is: Ride well enough to be within seeing distance of Wade crossing the finish line first so that I can raise one arm for the photo!
  • #9 has been on my mind for a while now you got to drag me along for that. You'd definitely need a photographer for that lol!!!. I'd love to just take six months off and cover all the spring classics and the 3 grand tours. If and only if a presspass falls in my hands. :-)

Putting pen to paper really made me think about what’s important... there's more to life than bikes. I'm ditching my Sunday ride to take my kids out for a treat.

I have ticked off half of yours Wade:
    - Toured Portugal etc (admittedly not with your wife) - 1994
    - Toured England, Scotland (same again) - 1993
    - Rode around Vietnam (not with your friends) - 2007
    - Rode cobbles of Paris Roubaix and finished on the velodrome - 1993
    - MTB Rotorua (did this year)

I recently ticked off another one of mine by riding a 24 Hour Solo MTB Race without sleeping

Remaining ones on my list include:
    - Race Worlds (looking like it will be age group...)
    - Tour Bolivia
    - Tour Syria/Jordan/Egypt/Lebanon
    - Crocodile Trophy
  • this is why I find you such an interesting and likable guy Brad! You can have the Crocodile Trophy all to yourself though

Ride with Lance for an afternoon without thousands of others. More of a "wish" than a "bucket list" as it'll never happen
  • DJ
my life won't be complete until I do the RAAM
  • jason
Trans Rockies mtb race is the only addition i'd have for my bucket list.
  • Louis Lee-on Turnchez
I wouldn't mind spending a night with the various podium women around the world. Particularly the tall ones!
  • Leigh
Is it wrong to steal someones Bucket List?
or do you need an assistant?
    Great List
  • Leigh, you're welcome to join me on every one of those, except that you better not pip me in the sprint at Sandown. I'll also have to ask my wife about #1 and #2
