[...] The new recovery drink. I found that chocolate milk is supposed to be just as good as a sports drink. What?!?!? Yes, that childhood favorite drink is back on my menu at home. After an intense ride, I mix up some chocolate milk and down it. It’s supposed to help with recovery time and refuel you for the next ride. I’m giving it a try. Can’t tell a big difference yet. Here’s a link that got me hooked: http://www.cyclingtipsblog.com/2009/05/chocolate-milk-the-perfect-sports-drink/ [...]

I'm sort of confused by this article. It states that "more recent research suggests that adding protein to the mix may further hasten recovery."

But then goes on to say later that "During a second round of exercise, the cyclists who drank the chocolate milk were able to bike about 50% longer than those who drank Endurox, and about as long as those who drank the Gatorade."

So, adding protein is better if its MILK, but, regardless of what we said earlier, it's still not as good as Gatorade. Right, gotcha. I guess the dairy industry did fund the research.

I'll stick with Gatorade + bananas.

Back in the early 1950's two of Australia's greatest stage race riders, Max and Keith Rowley use milk during and after competing.Maybe the fact that they were dairy farmers from the Maffra area in Gippsland it was their drink of preference. What goes round comes around.

— What about the vegan cyclists (like me), are soy or rice or almond milk(s) a good way to refuel after a ride? Great post, they all are.

Thanx in advance...

the iced coffee version of your theory is even better. why wouldn't you want a little caffeine in that recovery drink? especially if its half past 2 and you've got another 3 hours to grind out.
