Champion System Clothing

June 5, 2009 · Comments

November 2009 UPDATE: My race team (O2 Racing) just received our new batch of kit ordered from Champion Systems.  Let me tell you, it’s improved significantly without any price increases.  As per our previous experiences, Champ-Sys was easy to deal with and we got our clothing ahead of schedule.

The armwarmer/kneewarmer/legwarmer complaints in the review below have been improved upon and the knicks are significantly better quality.  I’m very impressed!

The team I ride with changed our clothing supplier to Champion-System about 8 months ago.  I have to admit, I was skeptical at first.  The price points were too good to be true as were the manufacturing lead-times.  I strongly felt that when it came to cycling clothing, you get what you pay for. I wanted nothing less than Assos just because of this reason. However, now that I’ve had the chance to ride over 15,000kms in our summer kit I can’t say that I have any complaints.  In fact, I’m pretty darn happy with it.  If you don’t notice your cycling clothing, that means it’s doing a great job.

When it came time for my team to order winter clothing, I remained skeptical that the affordable prices weren’t going to provide the quality I wanted.  If there’s one time of the year that I want to be 100% comfortable, it’s Melbourne winter.  I have a few pieces of Assos winter kit that I’ve mortgaged my house to get and I told everyone I’d never wear anything else.  Champion-System generously sent me over a mountain of winter clothing in my team colors to try out and review.  Now that I’ve put a couple thousand km’s in my Champion-Systems winter kit, I’m proven wrong once again.  It’s pretty darn good!

Champion-Sys offers absolutely everything you could imagine for kit. They offer accessories like booties, undershirts, caps, armwarmers, kneewarmers, legwarmers, vests, all sorts of jersey variations…you name it, they got it, and can customize it however you want.  I wanted to go as far as the team tracksuits but I got called a wanker too many times to push ahead with it.

I highly recommend considering Champion-System clothing for any team or club looking to gear-up. We’ve certainly had a positive experience with their clothing and customer service.   If we didn’t like them, we wouldn’t have placed multiple orders.  The team I’m on is fondly known as “Team Has-been”.  We have former pro riders who have reached the podium in races we only read about in cyclingnews.  These spoiled brats have been around the block and have seen some of the best equipment money can buy.  If anyone would complain about this kit, it would be this mob.

I solicited comments from the others and here’s some of the positive feedback I’ve received:

Best value for money due to no middle man (doesn’t go through a distributor) and no nonsense.  Everything is possible, ie no difference in price for 1 color or 10.  The other manufacturers try to charge for full zip and race radio pockets, Champion-Sys don’t.  Low minimum order as well. Quite timely in comparison to all other manufacturers. We got our Bay series kit rushed over in under 2 weeks.  Also, all artwork is hosted and approved online.

Overall package is very good for competitively priced clothing. I have had kit supplied from many manufacturers over the years, this has been one of the better experiences both for timeliness of supply and quality of product

Love the two way zips (this comment is echoed by everyone I talk to)

Love the fit of the long sleeve jerseys

I like the elasticized arm holes of the wind vest. Stops the annoying flapping noises a vest can make in the wind

Overall I’m very impressed with the clothing – the race jersey fits really well (i.e like a quality race jersey should fit).  The long zip is spot on, the shorts good and have very good elastic on the legs, the chamois could be a little bigger, but i think its just my butt!!

There’s very few cycling products on earth that would please everyone and I thought I’d raise some of the consistent complaints about the Champion-System clothing to keep this balanced an unbiased.   It would be a crime for me not to mention this as I feel these comments are valid where improvements could be made.

Material for legs warmers, arm warmers and knees lacks the stretchiness and softness that the long fleece tights and bib knicks come with (my two favorite items so far).

The material for the leg, knee and arm warmers lacks the elasticity of many other good quality ones and they seem to stretch after a while.  If these were more elastic they would also fit better.

Fleece Cap - keeps the head warm, sweat off your face, and the sun out of your eyes.  Good for below 10 degrees on those winter days when the sun is low.

Neoprene Booties – these will get you through those wet cold mornings below 8 degrees.

veep8983-2

Winter Gloves – warm and fuzzy on the inside and windstopper on the outside.  Rubber grip on the palm.  Good for 0- 10 degrees C.

veep8999-2

Dual Zipper Vest- everyone’s favorite feature to easily get stuff out of the rear pockets of jersey and you don’t need to fiddle with getting it zipped back up. Brilliant!  Warm too.  Best from 8-15 degrees C.

veep9005-2

Knee Warmers – customize all your accessories however you want.  Best from 8-15 degrees C.

veep8974-2

The complete kit and my pathetic trackstand.  Vest, cap, undershirt, 3/4 knicks, jearsy and armwarmers.  Perfect for a 8-15C winter day.

  • Us Duro Strada boys love our champ sys kits....great price and speedy delivery!!!
Only thing that lets them down is there Arr warmers...just look to faded and stretched out..

    other than that awesome

    Gonna look into this.

    Questions unanswered:
Does the jersey hold up? Stretch? Sag?
How waterproof is the winter gear? Gloves? Booties?
  • The summer jersey has a great fit and doesn't stretch or sag out of form. I have the "race fit" jersey that has a nice form fit. If you like a looser fit they have that option available too.

The winter fleece jersey has a bit too much sag when the pockets are filled for my liking. However, all my winter fleece jerseys are like this, no matter what brand. It's because of the material that's used. It's not good for holding a bunch of heavy stuff in the pockets. How I get around this is I put most of the heavier stuff (like tube and pump) in my jersey pockets underneath the fleece jersey. Then it's fine.

I've ridden in light rain and showers with the gloves and booties. So far so good, but I think that if you get caught in a rain storm for hours there's no getting around being soaked right through. The gloves and booties stop the wind and moisture for sure, but not certain about heavy rain yet. More than likely the booties won't let water in nearly as much as the water from your tights draining down will.

Our team also uses Champ Systems and I agree with the review. My only complain is the lycra foot covers. They come unzipped on me and are not terribly comfortable. Otherwise, I like it all.
  • Rob
Speaking of Assos. Anyone know - How the heck do you clean road grim after a wet ride from my dam Roll Royce red jersey? The shop guys say only wash it in wool mix or the Assos stuff. I tried that but my new top is now splatted with black crap. Any ideas?
  • Tony R
Now if there was ( is ) a clothing line that had the quality, and worked as well as Assos, with out the silly bloody price, things would be so much better.

Love my sunny morning sub 0 degrees rides with the Assos vest, but with their prices thats all most people can afford.
  • Peter
How's the Champ-Sys (Race Cut) sizing? And from anyone's experience, do the jersey's hold their shape well (or stretch and sag)?
  • Jeremy
The champ sys kits fit real nice on me. I really like the cut and the elastic material. Also like the bibs, especially the brace around the quads. Bit thin but surprisingly wears well. If you have 3 of them to change around should last a year no probs. I also quite like the chamois, a bit like DeMarchi.

Ventou is thicker, but wears about the same. Jersey material is of an older style perforated material you find in other sports. But in terms of price is actually quite similar to Champ Sys. No setup price, and good if you need things fixed etc.

Assos as we know is a bit expensive, but the materials are great. Only thing I hate is the white SS13 jersey. After a few washes, it looks worn.

Socks, nothing comes close to Thorlo :-)

Once again the suckers get suckered into thinking expensive brand = best product. As an ex member of the Assos Sales and Marketing team in the European Head Office I only ride in Assos kit as I got quite a collection for free over the years. To put it simply, put the product in a suburb with disposable incomes (South Yarra), put a high price tag hanging off it and wait for the suckers to flood in... Suckers! It's great gear but not worth the price tag in both look and quality. Ever heard of a Placebo, It has a lot to do with your perception of the product and how your mind belives that $400 knicks feel Sooo good. Do you really think that they put all that extra money into R&D for next years kit?
Nice review wade, and your team kit looks great!
  • Stephen
To a (slightly) lesser degree the same can be said for frames, wheels etc. I hear Pinarello's carbon frames are manufactured in Taiwan and 'finished' (painted) in Italy.

    Good one Richard.

    well said Steve
  • Steve
yeah, yeah, Assos is amazing stuff, but that's not what this is all about. Assos has no interest in printing custom team clothing, and if they were it would cost $600 for jersey and knicks (no exaggeration). What we're talking about here is decent team clothing with flexibility to print whatever design you need, great lead-times, and a decent price. In my experience with ordering from Champ-Sys I have nothing but good stuff to say about it. Great experience with them.

I agree with both the positive and negative feedback that WW solicited and wrote. My only complaint is that the arm/leg/knee warmers could be made out of better, more elastic material. Otherwise everything else is excellent value!
  • jittery hubbard
    hey lewie,
I have a very sensitive bottom so the thick comfotable chamois in the Assos is perfect.
    cheers,
    The J-man

the ventoux stuff looks good (but not in white or is that a whitey orange) and is very comfy BUT

ASSOS ASSOS ASSOS ... the rolls royce of knicks.

if you have to ask how much then you can't afford it !

the O2 gear loogs good ... from behind anyway because I'm never in fromnt of you guys (except for craig cos he's always sitting on in the 6am ride) ...

see you all in the morning .... bright eyed and full of caffee !
  • Luis Lee-on Turnchez
    Assos boring, boring, boring.
I make the Ventou stuff look good with or without fake tan :-)
  • Christian
Send me a free kit of each and I'll tell you which one is the best.
  • Luis Lee-on Turnchez
Ventou is the best cycling clothing by a mile. Champion-Systems isn't even close. Ventou is like a BMW, Champion Systems is like a Toyota.
  • 2wheeler
    So...
Ventou is stylish but unreliable, and Champion is fairly priced and well built?
  • Buttsy
Must admit, have used both and you have to make sure with Ventou that you are ordering the "higher quality knicks" as they have the budget line and the letter line......in knicks anyway.....Have only bought Champs Sys and have had it for about two weeks and love it

I beg to differ on that one.

I agree. Our team ordered Champ-Sys clothing and I was skeptical at first as well. It's proven to be nothing but a good experience all around. It's not Assos, but it's also $200 per item cheaper than Assos. Very happy with our Champ-Sys choice
  • Greg
Team kit is usually changed over every year or two anyway due to new sponsor logos, colors, etc. As long as its comfortable for those one or two years that's good. I'd hate to be putting my "Assos quality" team clothing in a box and never seeing it again after a year of use just because our team colors have changed...
  • Anonymous
    great photos!
  • You're way more hardcore than you let on. Is that the same O2 that sponsors an English rugby team?

Thanks for writing this up. I am in charge of designing jerseys for the cross-country cycling fundraiser my non-profit runs. I have seen ads for their well-priced jerseys and was also skeptical, but will give them a try now.

Question for you: I suddenly find myself a freelance product tester for Women's Cycling Magazine, a U.S. publication debuting in mid-June. Yesterday, a box full of Castelli shorts and jerseys arrived at my doorstep. Obviously, seasons are an issue. I have to write up these summer clothes before the company switches to its winter line.

What do you think of magazine reviews? You've put a lot of miles on your kit, so you know it well. It took me 3,000 cross-country miles to figure out that I hated my cycling shorts and that they didn't hold up very well.

Can I really do a good review after just a few, long rides? Obviously, I can tell a few things right away - one of the chamois is so wide I can barely walk in the shorts. One of the jerseys feels like butter, and I was tempted to sleep in it last night...

OK. I didn't just say that.

I want to do the initial review as best as possible and would appreciate your suggestions. I'm thinking that certain items that stay on could be re-reviewed. Since the magazine has a blog, I can do more than monthly reviews.

Anyway, nice kit. Thanks for the input.
  • S
Just from someone who reads reviews. Just be honest. Say "it took me 3000 miles to fully decide whether I liked a previous product, I have had these shorts for 3 weeks, but this is what I think". The magazine only employs you for your opinion, just give people the proviso's that go with the opinion.

    Where are the steak knives???
  • nice one WADE - looks good - kit is all about having FULL kit - winter included - better off being warm and good looking than freezing and daggy!
