Contador The Favourite…Only Just

Most of you in Australia will know the voice and personality of Matthew Keenan very well.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with Matt, he is one of the best cycling commentators that the sport has to offer.  He does work for SBS and the ASO and commentates the top pro races alongside Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen.  He’s also a genuinely great bloke and I’m extremely pleased and fortunate that we’ll be reading more of his cycling/race perspectives here on Cycling Tips.  Especially since the TdF is coming up next week and he’ll be deeper in the mix of it than most of us could ever dream!

I want to welcome Matt to being a regular contributor here.  He has perspectives and opinions about cycling and pro racing that goes far deeper than I could ever offer.   Let me tell you, not many people know cycling like Matt does.  You can also read more of Matt and the SBS team on Cycling Central.  Enjoy!

Contador The Favourite…Only Just

The bookies have Alberto Contador as the short priced favourite for the Tour de France but the gap between the Spaniard and his rivals is not be a big as many of the punters may think.

Contador hasn’t shown the dominance of Lance Armstrong or Miguel Indurain, who regularly crushed their rivals.

His 2007 Tour de France victory was by a mere 23 seconds – the second smallest margin ever.

Last year’s Giro d’Italia, admittedly with limited preparation, was won without winning a stage.

And his victory in the 2008 Vuelta a Espana was almost reliant on time bonuses. Without the time bonuses he was on equal time with team-mate Levi Leipheimer and would have only won on a count-back by hundredths of a second.

Although these victories put him in illustrious company, as one of only five men to have won all three grand tours, they also highlight a fragility that gives his rivals hope.

Combined with his capitulation at Paris-Nice, they also demonstrate that if something doesn’t go quite according to plan there isn’t much margin for error.

Cadel Evans showed at the Dauphine that he’s prepared and ready to take Contador on. And even though he still doesn’t have an all-conquering team it looks stronger than it ever has.

With his victories in the Vuelta, Denis Menchov has shown in the past that his second grand tour of the season is often better than his first. So if his form improves from the Giro he too could join that select group of riders to have won all three grand tours.

Andy Schleck has all the team support you could ask for and, all be it a one-day classic, demonstrated at this year’s Liege-Bastogne-Liege that he can handle the pressure of being team leader.

And Carlos Sastre, despite some odd team non-selections (let’s not talk about them), will not surrender his title without a fight.

Plus there’s Contador’s team-mate Lance Armstrong. If anyone can defy logic, at 37-years-of-age, after three years of retirement and become the oldest ever winner of the race, it’s Armstrong.

So yes Contador is justifiably the favorite, but with these and a few more wildcards lining up in Monaco it’s no forgone conclusion.

Who’s your pick?

Glaxo Smith Kline for the top three finishes.
  • Sastre FTW!

I know you guys are still bitter about your boy Gerro not making it to the final Cervelo Tour selection, but Van Poppel is a badass.
  • There's 3 things I'm looking forward to in this year's tour

    1. the amount of real contenders and the openess of the race
    2. the drama that is predicted to ensue with Astana
    3. the fact that I can watch the tour first thing in the morning when I wake up instead of at 1am! (being in Canada this month instead of Aus!)

    This is my prediction,

    1st place Lance
    2nd Sastre
    3rd Menchov

Lance would not risk ruining his 7 straight wins record, unless, he knows for sure that his body still has the horse power. Lance will be strong come July 4th, but he won't risk wearing the yellow jersey the first week. He will let the other teams carry it for him, untill the 2nd week.
Menchov and Sastre are much better climbers than Rogers and Evans.
Cadel just doesn't have the leg snap to get away in the mountains.

    Just my 2cents

I think Contador followed closely by Cadel EVANS and Armstrong. leading into the last week. I think armstrong goal would be to simply monitor all his leaders challengers (As his team mates have done for him the past) and attacking if required to unsettle them. It will be up to Contador to take charge. If armstrong is in the top 5 in the last week and Contador isn't he will go For it. If he is in the Top 10 and Contador is in the Top 5 he will play team mate role. I am sure they at Astana have flowcharted there heads off. However the best laid plans are only as good as the people in them playing there roles. No rest up for 3 weeks of no sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It'll be awesome. Every winner since 1999 will be racing.

Only one key protagonist missing... Looks like he, however, is enjoying retirement. Legend!

Good get Wade; Welcome on board Matt, we're all looking forward to your insight.
I'm a little tired of hearing about how Cadel has a bad team. It's an easy excuse to prepare disapointment and I'm concerned the more people state it, the more they (Lotto) will believe it, this is not the same team we've seen represented in the past, I'm also glad to see M.Loyd get a start because I'm sure he'll wear his heart on his sleeve for his team mate and his country and give Cadel everything he has or bonk trying.
Don't forget about Rogers - this guy has a some digger spirit too and might surprise on an early break.
C'mon Aussies - Take it up to 'em.

Great to have Matt commenting on the TDF on CTB,a BIG bonus to your site Wade, the CTB site just keeps getting better and better.

Oh it's going to be HUGE this year. A massive lead up to what is going to be a cracker of a race. I really like the look of Cadel but I have to question the strength of his team.

I am hoping that Astana suffers from inter-team politics and a split forms because on paper, if they work for one rider, whether that is Lance or Alberto, how could they be beaten?
  • Jeff tee
    Love your work Matt.
After seeing a bit of footage of Cadel in the Dauphine, I like the look of him this year. He had a tough time there against the Spaniards. His team may be lacking though.
  • JC
Nibali and Liquigas teammate Pellizotti will surely be in the mix. Neither will win, but they'll definitely shake things up.
  • Marc
I haven't looked so forward to a TdF in a long long time. The drama and racing over the next month is going to be like we haven't seen in years!

I do agree with you Matt - there are a lot of other favorites out there besides Contador. The issues with his questionable support on Astana along with the other contenders this year makes it wide open.

I think Schleck has a great chance now that he doesn't have a certain Spaniard to support this year

Great to see you writing here Matt. I always get a lot out of your opinions, and predictions. Don't know how the Americans can stomach watching the Tour with Bob Roll. Luck us here in Aus!
