What You Missed…In Tibet

August 14, 2009

Here’s a photo I couldn’t let go unnoticed.  You can see the rest of the photos submitted by clicking on the “What You Missed Photo Competition” photo on the top right of the page.  Feel free to leave a comment to cast your vote.  I can’t possibly decide on this on my own!

what you missed in Tibet

This picture was taken in the early morning in Tibet. The picture is taken from the top of Pang La at about 5300m above sea level. The mountains you see in the background are the Himalaya (Everest is off to the left) and the descent, as you can see, involved a few switchbacks. Later that day I climbed to Everest Base Camp (back up to 5300m) and arrived on dark. The entire 100km day was spent above 4000m. -Brad

Actually - I remembered I did meet a French guy while I was there travelling alone. Here is a link to a more detailed blog if you would like to read more about it and see other photos

Were you independant or with a guide? Did you see any independant riders?
  • Brad
I was independent. I didn't see any other solo independent riders but a few pairs and threes. No one can live with me....

Why did you stop at base camp? Couldn't go any further up? Wuss...

    ;-)

Why all the switchbacks? It doesn't look all that steep. Or is it just the way the camera captures it?
  • Brad
Also, to give a sense of scale those mountains in the background are more than 8000m so the sense of perspective is changed. It was reasonably steep....

The Chinese trucks that use those roads were built in the 1950's - they can't handle much grade. Also, it can get rather snowy in winter. :-)

Brad I think you could post a photo a day for the next 12 years and we wouldn't get bored ..... he has rode every "....stan" country with a swag of stories to go with each photo.
I was having a bad day until I saw that photo and it made me feel heaps better .....
