Back After The Break….

Last night I posted an article about asthma in cyclists written by a Chiropractor friend of mine.  It basically talked about some of the symptoms of asthma and what to look out for.  As a cyclist with asthma myself I thought it was interesting, however it had a slant towards Chiropractic care (I asked him to revise it once to take most of the Chiropractic stuff out).  It was not a paid ad as many suggested however. Just a topic that I’m not knowledgeable enough to write on with authority.

Anyway, after overwhelming negative response I’ve taken the article down.  After reading it again I agree that it has too much of a Chiropractic edge to it.  I think there’s definitely a place for Chiropractic therapy, but I think I’ll leave the topic of diseases and ailments to more traditional medical practitioners.

Thanks for your honest feedback.  If you didn’t voice your opinion I would not know this. Unfortunately thousands of RSS emails have gone out.

Gone for a ride but luckily I had something in my inbox from Hunter Allen to post for today.  I’ll post it before noon.

Big learning experience for me this week. Thanks for being patient.

Cheers,

WW

  • Several hundred years ago, there was no 'scientific proof' to suggest that the world was NOT flat... yet Chris Columbus sailed anyway - and he didn't fall off! Just because there's no 'scientific' proof, don't discount the fact that it might indeed be true.

Many practicing Chiropractors still don't believe in the germ theory of disease and are confident that they can treat things like infections and cancer through spinal manipulation and the fictional "sublucattions". I was going to have a longer rant after reading that email but I assume many others aired similar thoughts to mine. Thank you for self editing and not perpetuating the misinformation and propaganda of pseudosciences flag ship, chiropractic. Much respect.
And to Grace. There was actually heaps of scientific proof that the world wasn't flat long before Columbus went on his boat trip and there is heaps of scientific evidence that the basic mechanisms of that chiropractic say they are manipulating don't even exist.
  • Dear Aaron,

I am curious to know why the Germ Theory- like any other theory is of such critical value to you when the actual article that was posted was research based out of Macquarie University in Sydney. There are multiple theories including the germ one which has its merits and gaps. Chiropractors are primary health care practitioners who focus on the integrity of the nerve system and its relationship to the spine. interferences are called Subluxations which have a afferent detrimental neural effect and a movement or kinesiopathological change. As far as evidence goes, every profession on this planet continually works toward more and more study and evidence, before we had a study that sunlight is good for bone health, we still used it. In my time as aparamedic, i came across many practices which could not be replicated on every person who presented with the same ailment and yet some of the time it worked and other times it did not. We dont shun hospitals because of a lack of evidence. Medical care is often based on much less scientific evidence than assumed and undergoes radical reversals.

The editor of the British Medical Journal revealed that only 15 per cent of all medical therapies have a scientific basis or have been demonstrated to be effective.
    British Medical Journal. 1991; 303: 798-799.

I would be happy for you to read the article and send you any information which may allay your concerns.

i think u missed the point
  • Mr.Tip: What's the deal with Russel Crowe's bike duel?
  • Unlike Russell, I don't have anything personal to prove on my bike ride with Wendy. Just want to get a few points across and show her that real people are behind the "lycra losers".

Maybe I should challenge Russell Crow to a bike duel?
  • Dude I want to read the article now (email to Tim M please?). I am all about chiro, coz it's helped me.

Maybe just do a big disclaimer at the front. You can never please everyone. Never, EVER, be afraid to sack customers (readers).

I think it might have been on Copyblogger the otherday, but I read about how you should never, EVER, sit on the fence. Here it is: http://www.copyblogger.com/qualified-and-respec...

Check what I do on heresysnowboarding.com/blog.

    NO fence sitting.

People will always forgive you if they know you're coming from a good angle and being honest. The ones that howl you down? Well, tell 'em, to get stuffed.

  • Thanks for the article on copyblogger but it's just not my style. I'm not bold and strongly opinionated in real life and cannot pretend to be so here.

If you’re like most bloggers, you’re making two huge mistakes with your content. You’re suffering from both qualification and respect when you write.

You’ll need to leave both of those behind if you want to be a successful writer with high conversion rates. The only way to write powerfully is to be bold, and to write boldly you must stop qualifying yourself and being overly respectful.

I think this is the type of writing style that certain Herald Sun columnists resort to in order to get a reaction out of people.

You're making waves because you're good at what you're doing and what you're doing is good. Just keep doing that. Keep making mistakes. Keep touching on sensitive areas. But don't bend to the whims of the "proven method". The proven method is begging for attention, and that's not what you do. :)
  • Thanks again for the extraordinary leeway that everyone is giving me. Not to mention the upfront honesty. The worst thing that could happen is for me to mess up time and time again without anyone filling me in.

Also, on the topic of the Wendy ride. Unfortunately we postponed it until early next week since the forecast last night was looking extremely poor. 45km/hr winds, thunderstorms...I didn't want to take Wendy out on a ride that I wouldn't do myself! As it turns out it's been a sensational morning here in Melbourne.

    Stay tuned next week...

    Hi Wade,

Are you a Gemini??? Your ability to maintain, and insert balance in any discussion is remarkable. In last week this talent has been tested by Wendy and her attention-grabbing clap-trap, the vociferous response from readers; LBS vs internet purchasing; Campy/ Shiman/ SRAM debate.

We’ve seen over the year, and this week that you’re on the ball with current issues that get people thinking, write them up well in a balanced, and engaging way. This has brought such a groundswell of support from your many readers. An occasional slip may occur, but you’re big enough to own it and take it down. A big week, but a great one for CT and your readers.

Safe riding this weekend for all.

Can’t wait for the post-Wendy post.
  • Believe it or not I'm a Taurus! I can be stubborn on some things. I'm sure my wife will agree.
  • Hi Wade,
    Just looked at your site.
I feel it important to clear a few things up. The article which I wrote for you, is an explanation of what asthma is, what the symptoms are and what the alternatives to treatment are. These included massage, avoiding irritants etc.
Before I studied chiropractic, I worked as a paramedic and looked after lots of people with a multitude of afflictions.
I am sure that the majority of people are aware of the conventional treatment for asthma which includes inhalers and cortisone therapy.
I find it really positive that there are effective alternatives in many cases.
Last nights article included Australian based research on the positive effects of chiropractic on asthma.
I am sure that all the readers are astute enough to read the article, apprecite the content, check the references and decide if it is appropriate for them. I implore people to be open-minded generally, in this case, it was a research based article, not an opinion based one.
I would be happy to discuss any queries or questions in relation to it and encourage debate.
The beauty of the net is the access to information, the difficulty is keeping up to date, your blog is designed to inform and stir thought, hopefully we can separate opinion from fact and share the information that may benefit us.

how was the ride with Wendy?
  • Haywarm
Geeze, if you are riding with Wendy till 1330, she'll be shattered. But atleast she will know why you don't wear undies under knicks.

Hope a great ride is had by all

I skimmed through the article and perhaps thought it was a little too much of a 'sales pitch' for chiropractic. I really enjoy this blog and your posts (and the guest posts) on it.

While you should always ensure a high degree of 'quality control', I'd hate to see you holding back posts because you think they might be ill received by some. When it comes down to it, if you think chiropractic (or whatever the topic is) is a joke, you dont have to read the post.

I guess its a balancing act, and I can understand why you might be tempted to err on the side of caution with future guest posts. I woud say throw it out there, it at least sparks some (I hope healthy) debate!

Keep up the good work though, your efforts are much appreciated.

Didn't read the whole article or the comments. And maybe it wasn't credible. But I think that the value of the rest of the content you create and post here offers you the allowance of screwing up every once in a while.
  • Ben
FYI if you're interested: There's an important libel lawsuit going on in the UK at the moment between a science journalist (Simon Singh) and the Chiro association. He wrote an article (i think in the daily telegraph?) questioning the claims made by the association that their treatment can cure a range of illnesses (including asthma), in particular in reference to small children.

Basically there isn't any scientific proof to back up these claims and that's we he has stated, so now they're suing him.
Whatever the result, the case really highlights how messed up the libel laws are in the UK. It's a case of guilty until proven innocent.
  • Never be afraid to edit down your stuff. Good job.
