Winners Are Grinners! Go Gerro!

gerro1

I know what you’re thinking and thank you, but I can’t take all the credit for Gerro’s stage win today.  Gerro did quite a bit of training throughout his career to get to where he’s at. CyclingTips has only “guided” him with the some of the finer details of bike racing, victory salutes, and life tips.  Gerro did most of the hard work and I can’t claim all the glory.  It’s the least I can do to repay him for all the plugs he’s been giving CyclingTips on facebook and twitter.  Well done Gerro. Love your work.

Notice Gerro’s victory salute refinements as he gets more accustomed to the glory of Grand Tour wins:

gerroVictory

Watching this video of Gerro’s epic win sent shivers down my spine.   If you listen to Matt Keenan you can hear him biting his tongue trying not to call it with a bias towards Gerro.  Exciting stuff!   The only mixed feelings I carry is that Ryder Hesjedal missed out on Canada’s first Grand Tour stage win since 1988 when Steve Baur won stage 10 at the TdF.  Ahh, Ryder will get his day. No one can pronounce his last name anyway. It also would have been interesting to see what antics Vino would have come up with if he had claimed victory. What a circus that would have been.  In any case, I have a CyclingTips jersey with Gerro’s face embroidered all over the front and back going into production as we speak.

I’m elated that Gerro got his third Grand Tour victory and congratulate him. I’m officially declaring this site as Simon Gerrans’ Unofficial Fan Club.  Is there anything stopping this guy!!!???

Well Done Gerro! Doing the Aussies proud.
I wish you luck for the rest of the tour.

Christian September 9, 2009 at 8:24 am

I can only hope that his next Team will get him in TDF, cuz he knows how to win races and big ones

Jear September 9, 2009 at 8:37 am

The only thing stopping him? His team it seems… He won a Giro stage when you let him ride the Giro, a Vuelta stage when you let him ride that. I wonder what would’ve happened at the Tour??? Muppets!

cyclingtips September 9, 2009 at 10:53 am

Agreed. But now that he’s with SKY next year I think we’ll see him get some freedom and support.

Lots of people were surprised that Gerro didn’t go to The SHACK. I’m glad he didn’t as he’d probably only be playing a support role for Lance and Levi.

Go Gerro!!!!

hard_man September 9, 2009 at 9:10 am

Now lets wait until the World Champs …

I heard , a little bird told me , that he is aiming for a top 10 place.

He even has a bet going with a very stylish Melb ‘looks like a pro’ rider that who ever loses the bet pays for a night on the town ….

so lets wait and see, with this type of form there is no reason why SG can’t make the top 10 given a good day and if things fall into place correctly (and if he doesn’t have to rdie for some other out of form rider).

cheers

Champion!

Davo September 9, 2009 at 10:13 am

Wade where did the footage come from- was tring to find a live coverage?
Onya Gerro- all in all good day for Aussies, 5th and still second overall.

hard_man September 9, 2009 at 10:57 am

you tube had stage finishes (last 9km) for previous stages with Matt(the Man) Keenan doing the commentary so perhaps he grabbed it from there …..

cyclingtips September 9, 2009 at 11:02 am

that’s correct. I first saw it when I woke up this morning and Gerro plugged the CT blog on his facebook page. Then I saw that he posted the video as well. It’s from youtube.

http://vuelta.universalsports.com/ has coverage but is not available in Australia. I’ll try to find a proxy to connect to bypass this and post it.

Well done again gerro! Great to see another victorian giving the euros some stick!!

Steve September 9, 2009 at 12:09 pm

Wade **cough** shoutout **cough** Vuelta podium girls? Surely you can wangle them into a tip. Oh yeah, love your work Gerro…

Andy September 9, 2009 at 12:37 pm

Gerro, you bloody legend!!! As much as I love a bunch sprint for the sheer chaos and blistering speed, the drama of a small breakaway bunch in no danger of being run down from behind is spine tingling. I was on the edge of my seat watching the finale and I knew the result already! Awesome stuff.
p.s. – I have to admit to doing a Nelson Muntz “Ha ha” at Vino. T@$$er…

Geoff September 9, 2009 at 12:37 pm

Gerro is certainly doing a great job at plugging CT and vice versa. He sent out a link on Facebook last night talking up your “Life Tips” post for him. Did you see it?

SLINGER September 9, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Solid performance gerro!!! CT send a few jerseys over when they have finished producing them… We are Gerro crazy in Perth!!

Crakka September 9, 2009 at 2:39 pm

Great ride Gerro.
Love ya work mate.

Flinty September 9, 2009 at 4:56 pm

What a legend, now claims a rightful place in the history of Aussie Tour riders, if he hadn’t already. Thinking he may snag the Oppy this year…?

cyclingtips September 9, 2009 at 8:22 pm

For those of you who don’t know, the “Oppy” that Flinty is referring to is the Australian Cyclist of the Year award. I have no doubt that Gerro has earned this honor this year. If he doesn’t I’ll give him a medal myself!

From the Cycling Australia website:

The Sir Hubert Opperman Trophy has been presented to the Australian Cyclist of the Year since 1958. For the years 1958 to 1995 the Award was under the custodianship of Mr Bill Long, a life member of Cycling Australia, and it was presented for the ‘ride of the year’ by an Australian Cyclist.

Cycling Australia took custodianship of the Award in 1996 and it is now presented to the best all-round performing cyclist each year who also displays a high level of sportsmanship and is an ambassador for the sport of cycling.

Sounds like it’s time for someone to “paint up” Beach Road again.

Anonymous September 10, 2009 at 7:10 pm

the middle shot is him winning the GP Pluoy, not the Giro stage. Also mad props to Gerro, and totally agree with the mixed feelings about Ryder, I was praying that Vino would not win

cyclingtips September 10, 2009 at 7:27 pm

I was wondering when someone would catch that.

Anonymous September 13, 2009 at 8:33 am

among other things (the fact that there was nobody near him at the Giro) the white jersey instead of the black one is a dead giveaway.

Gerro September 11, 2009 at 3:48 am

Wade,
You might not believe this, but you deserve a little more credit than you realize for my Vuelta win. You see I read your “life tips” article the day before I won. After reading your article I felt so calm and so much wiser to what may lay ahead in life, there was no way I was going to be beaten in that breakaway. To add to that, the only thing that was going through my head in the final 100m was your “victory salutes” column, so I’m most pleased that you’re happy with my progression.

Thanks again,
Gerro

Anon September 11, 2009 at 10:37 am

Nice won (one) Gerro.

If ever there was any doubt… an ace, hard rider and an ornament to the sport. This attitude will take him a long way in life!

Haywarm September 11, 2009 at 12:07 pm

Love your work SG

You are an inspiration mate

Congratulations Gerro. Great work

Gerro is truly proving himself in the grand tours
Can anyone confirmed whether Gerro is the first Aussie to win a stage in
all 3 grand tours.

cyclingtips September 16, 2009 at 8:20 pm

Myth Confirmed. Gerro is the first Aussie to win a stage in all Grand Tours!
