The only issue I see is that if your employer knows about your cycling habits he may block access to your favorite Cycling Blog! Then what are you going to do??

I’m not sure if cycling is a fringe sport in Canada. No, it’s not Hockey. But on any given weekend in North/West Vancouver, the number of roadies generally outnumber the number of cars on the road.

My boss is also a triathlete and understands my desire to ride (when I actually ride as hollywood would say). It makes things so much easier at work to start an hour or so later by sneaking in a longer ride.

Where I work they certainly embrace it as they bought us full “Planex” cycling kits.

My boss is the one who got me in to triathlon/cycling, so it makes things much easier if I’m running late after my morning ride because ‘traffic is shocking…’ (ie, oops, I was having too much fun and rode later than I should have).. and those invetible times when a couple of hours is needed in the afternoon to head to the physio etc!

To add a little more weight to your argument CT, cycling and/or running actually promote your mind to move into the theta brainwave pattern- which is when the mind is best for providing clarity and insight for problem solving.. Cycling images posted all over my office gives my boss no option but to accept it. :) I find that most punters in Aus can now relate to cycling. In the late 80s and 90s it was very different as the sport was not truly global in terms of the mass media paying it enough attention, it was very much a fringe sport. Now, however, cycling news is regularly featured on the 6pm news, newspapers and radio…. except this weekend where Melbourne becomes crazy about the oval ball. :)

Badoom-tish, great jokey-joke fatboy Boss) and don’t get it but like you said, the key thing is packaging your passion and need for exercise…this coupled with doing a good job allows you/me to get away at 4PM every day for more tarmac time.

Well do I remember the days of driving from Hampton to NEC in Mulgrave as a young intrepid Telco Systems Engineer in my sik Falcon panelvan (and later Subaru wagon with rad white Sunraysias) dodging traffic, ANGRY, SEETHING, impatient, at the other single occupant road users – failing to see the irony of the situation. YELLING at roadies (seemed the right to do as a MTBer, “get off the road you c@rrrrrrrrnnnnts”). In a terribly unhappy relationship. Covering the unhappiness in food. Taking my 5’7″ frame from 70-off kg to a lazy 88kg. Getting angrier.

Then one day my very good friend Matt B, what with his delightful commute up Beach Rd Hampton (where we lived in a much loved, 2 storey, 5 BR party house opposite the beach which as a I recount was a obscenely good place to live) every day to Port Mel just delighting in the young ladies frolicking on the beach as he rode home of a sparkling summer afternoon, imbued upon me his sense of spirit and adventure and encouraging me onto the 2 wheel steed, whereupon I started my journey into 2 wheeled treadly-land, replete as it were with unicorns, strapping stallions and rapid passage across the undulating terrain.

And, lo and behold, as my riding, coupled with some gym work, better eating, saw me go down to a lazy 75kg – then a timely shedding of aforementioned unhealthy relationship – saw another 15kg unattach itself, which, miraculously, ended up rounding me off, thus leaving a shiny new Tim.

Oftimes I have remarked to myself in surprise at the metamorphisis from angry, overweight, impatient, aggressive, unhappy human being, largely as a result of driving = overweight, into a lean, mountain-ninja, happy, healthy cycling ninja; much more patient and understanding on the road, defensive driver etc.

So, the benefits of cycling are manifold. People just don’t “geddit”. This whole Ride to Work Day business isn’t sticky enough, they should be pushing for Ride to Work MOST Days Day.

At a prospective job interview, I always make clear
- I will ride every day, rain hail or shine
- I come in at 7/7.30 and leave at 4 (99% of the time)
- Do they have showers (etc)
- On odd days in winter I need days for some alpenshredtime and in summer, come-in-late-days for some waveshredtime.

If any of this is an issue when I interview them, then it’s no deal! (Thanks to Channel 7 for the sterling addition to my everyday lexicon).

As Jon says, there are some occupations where work/life balance it very difficult if not impossible. It’s easy if you work in a fairly meager job where you can knock off and forget about it, but is this all you really want from a work?

Saying to a potential employer that your cycling is the no.1 priority is really not going to work wonders for you career IMO.

But more importantly, re-value yourself man. Are you doing them a favour by turning up or are they doing you a favour by employing you? Me thinks the first option, especially if your job is specialised enough to require certain traits and abilities.

And if it is the later and you aren’t distinguished with any abilities or skills, then surely the job isn’t too exclusive…

I’ve recently come back to Cycling after over 10 years off the bike. In those 10 years I reached an unhealthy size of 120kgs. Well after some life events (divorce) I realised that I needed to find my “soul” again. For me, that “soul” is Cycling. I’m at peace when out on my bike. That was Dec 2007…

I’ve just changed jobs and made sure my new boss understands how important my cycling is to me. She’s not a cyclist herself, but she understands my passion; that’s the key.

c) are there to automate and systemise themselves into redundancy thus value adding the organisation and hopefully creating a wellspring of value add into the value add paradigm

Anyone else is not worth working for. However, the system does rely on two core types of workers
- Entrepreneurial ninjas, and
- Worker drones

Take me for instance, there is NO way I am the easiest person to have working for you.

I am strict on my arrive/leave policy, I won’t attend a meeting that finishes/starts after 4PM (even for the CEO), I will usually reject your meeting request then come see you to share my information not time so you can get what you need (read Scott Snair’s “Stop the Meeting, I want to get off”), I work in a haphazard manner that can elicit total brilliant results/outcomes or abject failure (which in itself is a good thing, if you think about it).

You just need to decide where you want to be.

More and more people are realising the oppresive yoke of a 9-5 is not for them. The interwebs has made the world flat (The World is Flat, read it) and opportunities are there for the taking. The pie is ever expanding with loads of niches.

That all depends now doesn’t it.

Great statement mate I cant remember exactly who said something similar but I could not agree with you more find something you are passionate about in life and you will be passionate about life.

I myself have shred through cycling nearly 30kg and a lot of bad social habits, since I started cycling I have never been happier nor so successful in my endeavors work and life.

Employers love passionate people because passionate people bring energy to everything we do.

4.5 years ago all I wanted was to be promoted, earn more money, take on more responsibility. Working 12 hour days, not doing much exercise, and generally being unhappy. Then I realised as long as you can afford to live and pay for your hobbies or passions, why do you need more? Once I started dialling back the excessive work hours, and started running and riding more, I became so much happier within myself, and I became more productive at work! So I was getting similar amounts done, in shorter periods of time.. Win/Win if you ask me!

Now if I was offered another promotion, if it impinged on my ability to train at all, the answer would be no. In fact if I were to look for a new job, the only reason I would take it would be because it gave me more opportunity to train than my current one..

One thing that I forgot to say which echos Jake@8:55 am comment. Whenever I have a problem at work that I can’t figure out I’ll walk away from it, go for a run or a ride and the solution will become crystal clear in less than 30mins. One thing that I forgot to say which echos Jake@8:55 am comment. Whenever I have a problem at work that I can’t figure out I’ll walk away from it, go for a run or a ride and the solution will become crystal clear in less than 30mins. Agreed. Cycling is my ONE thing. My greatest passion (aside from my fiance). But I guess we must appreciate that for some people their work or their career IS their passion, their one thing. About 9 years ago I was looking for a Graphic Design job. There was a company in the area that was highly regarded in the industry and it was well known that the directors were both keen mountain bikers.

On my resumé I decided to add in my interests “Mountain Biking”, this pretty much got me in the door to show them my portfolio. At that point in time I didn’t own a bike and I had never ridden a mountain bike on single track. Long story short, I got the job and was then invited out for a ride with them shortly after. So after rushing out to the nearest bike shop and handing over 1k on a second hand bike I hit the dirt with them. It was pretty clear to them that I have never ridden before and they called my bluff.

1 week later I was racing in a 24 hour race with them, and they sent me out at 3am when it was pouring with rain. I came back in all muddy, cold and wet… they just looked at me, laughed and welcomed me to the world of cycling.

Timbo clearly is bored today, roads are wet, the snow is melting and the waves are sketchy!!

I am in the process of my metamorphosis at present, and my work life is one of the things I am looking to change. I remember fondly my time at Deloitte, where they were always going on about work/life balance as they pushed you to work 60-80 hours per week.

I started out last November as an 86-87kg well ‘rounded’ guy who lived for work, sometimes up to 60+ hours per week. My transformation now has me down to 75kg and riding 350+km each week and feeling so much fitter that ever before. The temptation to ride a further ten kilometres beyond seven am on weekdays or an extra hour on a weekender is prevelent. Knowing your limits means being able to get up on Monday morning without feeling smashed, especially when work is physical and energy levels need to be up during the day. How fantastic there are people out there that think like me ;)When I had a job at the start of the year I actually told my boss before I got the job that i would need time off for various races eg bay crits ( how brave of me!!) and still got the job.He was really understanding and could see the value in me being a happy worker just like im a happy cyclist!! I felt bad as I quit the job shortly after because of kids activities I wasn’t able to go to at school so I realised it wasnt the right time for me to return to work.

Im pretty lucky at the moment being a stay at home mum so I train when my youngest is at kinder. Next year he will be at school so I will have between 9 – 3.30!!! whoooaa…I was going to get a job but these casual jobs want you to work on the weekend…..What?? I race weekends…then I rest on Mondays because im tired from racing then need to get ready the next few days for the next race weekend!! ha ha..

I also have a similar problem regarding a shortage of daylight hours.
Currently I work from 5am to 5pm onwards in a VERY labour intensive environment. (I love my job and that is not a whine) I’ve found the best way to spin the legs over after work without having to worry about a shortage of daylight is to get on the rollers. I obviously don’t get the same sensations as being out on the road but with the right training on rollers come the weekend I feel as fit as I may have been had I trained out on the road. My advice is to get some rollers or a rear wheel trainer. Hope that helps?

Hey Wade. Being a fellow Canuck I have to admit I definitely feel the social pressure to hide the fact I am a cyclist. From getting changed somewhere prior to work and hiding the bike so as to show up “normal.”
To more recently when I won Provincials Road Race (Masters A), but haven’t told a soul. I definitely feel it wouldn’t be appropriate to share that accomplishment. To bad as it is a great tale of a 40 km solo effort actually working out – finished about a +minute ahead.

If it was hockey I would be allowed to gloat!! Oh well. Not too sure how to change things out here… maybe I just got to move to friendlier parts. So do you recommend Australia?

Australia is much much better. I found it “strange” how people at work would ask about my racing but I’d still downplay it. Eventually most monday mornings I’ll have a group of them sitting at the coffee table asking me about every detail of my weekend racing.

There was one time that I’ll never forget that I got second in a big race and I had a bunch of people in a cafe the next day who I didn’t even know coming by and congratulating me. Heck, I didn’t even win the race!

So yes, a place like Melbourne is a hotbed of cycling unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Ghent in Belgium apparently is a close second. Adelaide is amazing during the TdU as well. You can find yourself racing against nearly 200 others in some A-grade events (Cat 1/2) and up to 100 others in some Master’s events.

The great thing is that there are so many races during all times of the year. You can pick it up and put it down whenever you like (but it’s very hard to put down!).

Of course there are always people and drivers who don’t treat cyclists with much respect but that’s never going to go away.

Pack up your bike and come see it for yourself. The summer is approaching and there are thousands of bikes out on the road and more coming out every day. Amazing place to be involved in!

St Kilda CC has an ‘intro to racing’ grade to familiarise you with the format. It’s a fairly controled environment meant more for education than racing. . . but of course you’ll be given a chance to ‘wind it up’ for the last few laps.

After that you can jump into a higher grade, depending on your fitness. All clubs have a single-day licence ($30?) that covers your entry and insurance for the day. If you decide you want more racing, then join a club. See Cycling Victoria’s website for a list of clubs in Melbn.

telling the employer outright that you dont care about anything but cycling could be a fast way to be shown the exit in an interview, but displaying a life outside of work and success in other aspects of your life are both excellent ways to get asked back. Any good boss/interviewer will recognise that. In fact my experience is that all the best people i’ve worked with/for have ‘hobbies’ outside of work that they all to often excel at.

I must admit when i rocked up to my first race – Sandown Crit last summer i was a little intimidated – lots of people on lots of very fancy looking bikes. However, most people are friendlier then they look and if in doubt ask. I have also found the Southern Vets to be EXTREMELY friendly and inviting – especially around the bbq with a beer at the end of the races.

In D grade they often ride the 1st few laps at a controlled pace, which makes it a little easier to get into the swing of things. One thing – make sure you bring entry fee in small denominations – ie no $50 as they cant split the cash for prize money.

it is fantastic value for money due to all the amazing work of volunteers. Most club races are around the $10 mark.
