Sometimes we get caught up in the absurdity of ranting comedians, angry motorists and heated banter.  After a week over so much negativity we have passed by the opportunity to celebrate one of Australia’s biggest cycling achievements in history – Cadel winning the world title!

I was watching the replay of the race yesterday and it was just as exciting the second time around. The first time I saw it I only had a streaming internet feed without sound.  This time I had the pleasure of hearing Matt Keenan and Phil Liggett calling the race. It’s unbelievable how much more emotion these guys can add.  They could make watching paint dry sound exciting.

It was also great watching the race in hindsight while paying close attention to what the whole Australian team did for Cadel and how well they played the race.   The team support that Cadel has had in Silence/Lotto over the past two years has been far from ideal.  He certainly showed that he can come through with the goods when he has top notch team support like on Sunday.

What’s also amazing is that Cadel is the first World Champion who is a GC specialist since Abraham Olano in 1995.  This is a massive achievement in a race traditionally dominated by national dream-teams (Italy, Spain, Belgium) stacked with one-day specialists.

Could you imagine if this Aussie National team was assembled to make a ProTour team?  It get’s me revved up just thinking about it!

Everyone have a great weekend and I hope you’re inspired to race by Cadel’s victory.  SKCC, CCCC (and probably many other clubs) start their crit racing this Sunday which signifies the start of summer!   Don’t forget daylight savings

Also, good luck to everyone racing in the Master’s National Champs in Canberra this weekend as well as the World Master’s in Sydney the week after.

I’m off on a team training camp for the next three days so I won’t see you there but have fun, ride hard and don’t crash.

  • after watching the race live and
seeing Cadel attack and cross the line ,bought a tear to my eye then watching the replay yesterday
seeing Gerro well up there on the ready if required,
seeing Matty L there to the end,
seeing Rogers tactily placed in the break
seeing the work horses the likes of Stewi,Hayman,Hansen,Clarke and Sulzberger burying themselves for the cause,
seeing Neil Stevo's brilllant race tactics come into play
and finally hearing Matty K's best ever race call.
Such a great team effort put a lump in my throat, had what little hair I have left standing on end.
  • The Australian National cycling team has quite an impressive line-up, and yes I would agree if an all Aussie team was formed for the Pro-Tour events, they would be a formidable unit!

I recently did the Deaflympics in Taipei and Reece Emerson-Van Beek, a powerful Aussie Deaf cyclist, was impressive in the 50km points race breaking away solo to take maximum points on the last 7 sprint lap points to vault into 2nd place (silver medal). He came within seconds of lapping the field and had he succeeded, this would have given him the win over American Nick Schreiber.
  • Hmm, somewhat saddening to read the comments that go with Magda's article...the vitriol felt against cyclist is, well, scary...

Why? I mean I don’t like Collingwood supporters (why would you!!) but sheesh I just see them as poor, sad, deluded bastards but I don’t have an almost hate vengeance that seems to be directed by many at cyclists...

Seriously folks, we need to do something about this...Wade, can we start an action via this site to find some good ideas as to how to achieve a ground up change in community attitude?

Hmmm, seems there are 2 Andy's here... I'll change my name a bit then. ;)
Thanks CT for reminding us this is why we love our chosen sport! It's a beautiful here in the west, so as soon as I can I'm out the door and on my bike! :)

I'll have to find that clip of Cadel's win (Google here we come). Oh and I agree, it would be so sweet to see and Aussie TdF team next year. The big question is: "Who would be the major sponsor?"
  • Tony
Sure is nice here today Andy, good call on the early bail from work. I booked my early finish as soon as I walked in the door this morning. The 32k ride to home may just have to be dragged out a bit!!
  • Andy, WA
Who said anything about getting home? :P
Hmm, lets see; Friday, 21C, light breeze, last day in current job... Might just be a looonng lunch! ;)
  • Tony
I think the word I'm looking for is bastard :)
Enjoy the ride! And you better already be out the door, not like they can fire you....
  • Andy
I'll post as "AC" from now on - sorted!
  • hard_man
don't change it to AC becuase then we'll get you confused to Contador.
  • Andy
Ha ha! Don't worry you couldn't confuse me with Alberto. Ever. EVER!
  • AC
    Espanol???
  • Good words Wade...wathcing Cadel on the poduim, seeing our awesome flag fly proudly, hearing that anthem (I dont care what it sounds like, it is OUR anthem so I love it)...hell even typing this I get emtoional!!!!

Peace everyone, life is short so enjoy it, be good each other and lets try make this little globe a slightly happier place one person at a time :)
  • Mr amu
Good luck Jake, may the wind be at your back. Have a good weekend CTers, be safe on that beach rd
  • Andy
Busting with pride at the thought of an Aussie sporting the rainbow jersey for the next twelve months - if you've had crap luck before you win it, does the rainbow curse reverse?? Let's hope so! Don't forget our other world champ Jack Bobridge - what a class act for a bloke his age. No other country won two gold in Mendrisio and Australia continues to punch well above it weight in terms of quality riders per capita. C'monnnn!!!!

Don't waste your time bickering with Trolls and narrow-minded individuals - get out and ride. I did and I feel totally refreshed and more at peace for it. But what was that wet stuff all over the road???

"Almost 9 O'clock, gotta go to work"

Have a great weekend CTers. Be safe, be happy.
  • Jake
pmark- not sure if one are replaying it.. I have the whole race recorded in HD on the Tivo- if people get really stuck, let me know and I should be technically savy enough to burn it to a dvd/usb drive.

Bring on Sunday- my first race in over 14 years! Seven months ago I was getting whipped in London, working 15 hours a day, when someone sent me a link to this blog.
Since then, I've returned home, dusted off the old road bike, lost about 9kgs, (mostly on Kew Blvd), fixed the annoying creaking sound on the bike (skewer), refreshed myself on training and race tactics, the list goes on..... All thanks to reading some blog written by a Canadian in my home town that made me realise just how much I was missing! Avagoodweekend!!
  • Domestique
Kick some arse Jake, don't hit the wind too early.

    Good luck
  • Oasis
Good stuff Jake!! What a ripper story. I can understand your renewed motivation. I too would like to add my thanks to CT. It has added another enjoyable layer to my cycling life.

I think it's fair to say there has emerged from St Kilda an amazing cycling community. To have neighbors the likes of SKCC, CT, Ridewiser training centre, Cafe Racer, Spoke(n), the NRR etc. and even bloddy Beach Rd! I seems like I'm living in cycling heaven.
  • Oasis
... I'd also like to say 'thanks' to all of you clowns that add the entrtainment, insights and some selective hatred when required(nice one Timbo!) content to CT.

    Cheers
  • A perfect way to end the week - thanks CT :-)
  • pmark1bike
CT have a great weekend, lets hope we can get some sensibility back!! does anyone know if oneHD are going to play the race again over the weekend, so we can all marvel at what a champion Cadel is and how much quality we have in Australian cycling.
  • Mike
One HD have in listed to replay at 3:45am Saturday morning, the perfect motivation for that early morning ride.
    Cheers

    Awesome effort by Cadel!

I don't think anyone that cares has let this amazing achievement just slip by, it's just that mainstream media aren't interested and that's a shame.

Hopefully he can retain the title next year!

Does anyone know if there's anywhere I can watch the finishing stages of the race online?
