I don't race, I just enjoy challenging myself on long and hard rides. The HGH does sound like it would be useful as I start to get older and I would almost certainly take it (assuming I could afford to) if it wouldn't make me feel less proud of my achievements.

[...] So you want to get leaner, faster, stronger and not bulk up? This is the most informative article I have read on drugs in sport. It is a detailed and personal account of taking them, the effects and performance benefits they bring to endurance athletes and cyclists. It’s long but well worth the read. Please note it is NOT a moral article, nor too a discussion of the ethics but a scientific study of performance gains from an amateurs perspective. Endurance cycling drug use [...]

My mum was on EPO in her last days, and her shots (6 in all) were each 20000IU....huge amounts that I had to get them on special order....most chemists only stock 1000 to 2000IU....and the course of 6 cost $80...on the prescription, they were then on the PBS list and subsidised by the govt.
Well she only had 2 shots (and they worked for what they need to do) before she passed away.
I did read this article, but after reading that while the effects were brilliant, they were temporary, and the other problems.......thru the other shots out (did think of ebay or auctioning to my riding mates).....couldnt return them, as the chemist couldnt guarantee the quality or safety of my returns.
oh well....back to the mundane of actually riding to get faster....the effects last so much longer!

And I seem to remember several riders (including a freckly Aussie favourite) have had operations to remove blocked arteries... I wonder what causes that in a fit and healthy athlete?

I used to live in Seattle (where is is from) ... and there has been rumours for years ... he is/was the local crit racing stud and track king ... bad choices made; and he has (mostly) been ostracized for it. As Brandon's t-shirts say ... Dopers Suck

It sounds like I'm taking the highground but winning when your under the influence must be a shallow victory.

One of the reasons I love cycling so much is the clear corelation I can see in my performance from training, ie the harder I train the better I get. If you take that away by using performance enhancers I would just feel like I am cheating myself.

Disturbing. But this explains a lot. The extra power and especially the quick recovery... overnight.

there is no shame in losing any sporting event if you know you gave it every thing you had on the day, there is shame in winning if you do it by taking drugs or performance enhancing substances, if you loose an event you actually will receive a far greater prize than 2nd/3rd of whatever place you finish. that reward is honesty, ask yourself did i give it everything i had? did i train enough? did i perform the right training or cop out when it got hard or the most important question, was the guy who won just a better rider than me? i have learnt to accept "Be as good as you possibly can be" your colleagues will respect you and you can still win in yours and their eyes.
