Pimp My Ride

IMG_0188

Working with the Rapha team over the Sun Tour was a fantastic experience.  Aside from getting some great blogging material and meeting heaps of new friends, it also scored me a few freebies.  First and foremost I’m now the proud owner of over 100 new waterbottles (sorry, not the cool Rapha biddons).   This is a dream come true for me.  I’m very particular about my bottles and I’m also too cheap to spend $10 on a new one.   These are perfect.  Never will I need to buy another waterbottle again.

The other piece of swag I received for all my lackie work was Ben Greenwood’s broken team frame (as shown above).   The carbon frame is fixable so I thought this would be a great opportunity to do something special with a bike that represents an amazing week of memorable experiences.  I love the understated nature of this frame and think it has some huge potential to be something very unique once we heal it’s wounds.

I’m not aiming to make this the lightest and most schmick bike on the planet – I want it to have character.  I’m thinking that a “classic” theme with a modern flare to build around is my desired approach.  Things like:

- Selle San Marco Regal or Brooks saddle

- Ambrosio tublular wheelset

- Camy, Shimano or SRAM?

- Fyxomatosis chainrings

- It also needs a new paintjob.  I’d like it to have some nice detail added but all of the decals kept the same.

I think you get the picture.  These are just suggestions to get my head around the style of bike I’ll be building.

So what I’m looking for are suggestions from you guys on how to build this bike up in the stated theme as well as offers from local Distributors and/or Bike Shops to help me out with some components and product for this rig (email me here if interested).  Of course I’ll be documenting this whole process and everyone who helps will be getting full props.

My plans for this bike are simple.  This will be the CT Community Bike. If you’re visiting to Melbourne and need a bike to ride I’d be happy to lend it to you and show you around.  Or if you live in Melbourne and just want to go for a ride with it and me that’s cool too.

Cool? Cool.

What size is the frame? and have a look at http://www.thecoolhunter.com.au for any modern and awesome paint designs. Those guys are onto it with their colour schemes if ultra modern is your thing.

Go for a black groupset – so campy.
Keep the Black / White / Pink theme I reckon – keep it true to its roots.

Then: Maybe some kind of cool graphic to represent Ben's Crash and the Sun Tour. I'm thinking an Icon like a Medical Symbol (cross) and sun??

krashdavage November 5, 2009 at 1:31 am

Campy for sure but SR11? Not on a community loaner… unless Bikesportz cough up a free groupset. I don't know how classic you can go on a carbon frame though. Suggestions for some fave parts of mine:

Arundel stainless steel bidon cage. Just put some on my new Pegoretti and they are awesome!
http://www.arundelbike.com/stainless.html?p=1.1...

I'd definitely go Campy but maybe an all alloy look? you could prob find Centaur 10s or the new Athena 11 pretty cheap.

Also, custom built wheels by Dan @ http://www.shifterbikes.com/

cyclingTips November 5, 2009 at 1:48 am

That's an even better idea!

cyclingTips November 5, 2009 at 1:49 am

Love the cages. They'll hold my collection of biddons nicely.

Also, I like the idea of the alloy Campy 10spd.

Thanks!

Gruppo – Campy Athena 11
Wheelset – Ambrosio Excellence clincher rims/Centaur Hubs/Veloflex Pave tyes (nice solid wheelset but very cool… perfect for a training rig/loan bike. Dan at Shifterbikes is the man to make them!)
Bars – Deda Newton shallow drop

I absolutely love the Rapha the style (have one of their jerseys) and have to agree with Bunch Ride Finder's comment – that said would love to have a crack at reinterpreting their house style.
I'm a graphic designer up in Sydney so if you want some help with anything design related feel free to drop me a line

Selle San Marco Regal for a seat. Campy 10spd though. Ambriosio's would be sweet too. Sounds like a cool project!!

Agree with this mostly with some addiitons:

World cup winners tribute
Frame and fork painted black with World cup stripes in Colnago “ST” style.
Super record 11 (or Athena as above)
ZG custom brakes with mix of world cup colours
Gold POP skewers – sponsor to provide…
SSM Regal WCS edition
Black Thomson Post
Wet Black Ritchey WCS Stem
Gold Nokons

Wheels all black – will match the frame better
Record hubs / Open pro ceramics / Black DT Comps, 2 x front 3 x rear, same tyres .

Good choice on bar just need to choose what colour Hudz to get.

looking for a new nutrition product, something that is actually edible, tastes good, and is easy to get down when racing, can any body out there help ?

Douglas November 5, 2009 at 4:59 am

I'm thinking Campy, but the older 10-speed has more character to me. And Brooks, hands down. Nothing says soul like the original.

Thinking jet black then give her some flames around the forks, chainstays…

andrewzens November 5, 2009 at 5:21 am

The saddle has to be san marco, but why not go with one of the new concor supercorsa – vintage. they have some really cool colors, but i think this would have to have a white saddle, so in that case i think the ride is gonna need some white fisik bar tape as well. being from chicago the home of sram (and they are a team sponsor) i would have to say force or rival would be great on this ride, the paint scheme on sram cranks and cassette would look great. I need to plan a trip to ride this bike.

JustinB November 5, 2009 at 5:26 am

Love the Rapha colours the way they are!
Selle San Marco Regal – Brooks leather stretches and seat sags after awhile despite tightening, Selle much easier in the long run.
Ambrosio tubular wheelset, Vittoria Pave Evo 24c (thinking Paris Roubaix style here), DuraAce hubs front & rear for sweet rolling ride. Why not go single speed with a nice DA crankset and a sublime 144 BCD Fyxamotosis chainring from Andy?

Flames? – no way! too Trek Project One 1 .

jake November 5, 2009 at 6:55 am

would a 105 chainring, crankset, front derrailer go well?

JL November 5, 2009 at 7:25 am

CT,

Forget the Rapha Decals…All im seeing here is the CyclingTips coloured logo on the down tube, with a simple white frame. Pimped. If you can make that happen all the rest is secondary.

Lives up to the CT community concept too.

I believe it should be the “CT Team” bike. The kit is coming soon so it should match it and complete the Team look. This could start the “WW CT Team” (World Wide Cycling Tips Team). CT can publish the paint scheme so the hardcore fans can respray their own bike to look PRO :)

As for the community bike…aahhh… nahhh. The only other person that should get to ride it other than you Wade should be Gerro and that's only if he buys his own CT Team kit :)

bill posters November 5, 2009 at 11:22 am

whatever you do, dont forget to add “wade wallace” along the top tube with a little decal of your pretty canadian flag.
maybe you could find someone to hand paint a loonie as a badge on the head tube.

Tommy_P November 5, 2009 at 12:53 pm

Of course you will have to turn this into a hipster fixie. Don't have horizontal drop outs? No problem. Use a magic gear calculator to find the chainring/ cog combo to fit the chain stay length perfectly. There are a few online: http://eehouse.org/fixin/formfmu.php

If only CT could fit into a pair of skinny-jeans!!

Brian G November 6, 2009 at 5:56 pm

I built a 631 Bob Jackson 'retro' club bike last year. Mainly Centaur, inc the Centaur alloy seatpost, with Ambrosio rims and hubs. I wanted to keep the silver theme going but struggled to find a stem until I located the Nitto UI-5gx, a shiny alu road stem. http://www.hubjub.co.uk/nitto/nitto.htm
I also rather like their silver seatposts, with a USE shim.
I'd go for a Campag Athena Alloy 11 group set (pity about the ergos), with a Nitto stem and your wheels and saddle.
Please show us a photo of the finished bike; I have more than a passing interest in seeing the bike being ridden again.

Adi November 6, 2009 at 6:39 pm

Good shout Brian. I was thinking 'what would Ben put on it?', then I realised, nothing, he'd get you to do it!
I'd get the frame re-painted just as it is, it looks good.

Craig November 6, 2009 at 7:17 pm

Not a Brooks. Sitting on someone else's Brooks is like putting on someone else's shoes. Selle San Marco Concor FTW!

IMO:
Campy 10v or Athena 11v
Selle San Marco Concor
Record Hubs to Open Pro rims

Cycling Tips paint scheme.

bob burnquist November 17, 2009 at 9:03 pm

dont get it painted that will ruin the character of it with the rapha-ism
