  • Sometime it’s healthy to get out for a ride with a group of guys outside of your inner-circle.  It’s a refreshing change that’ll show you new roads and potentially new friends.  That’s just what I did last Monday.   TC, Matt and Andy took me out for an EPIC loop I’ve never even considered before.  As usual, TC from fyxomatosis captured the day with his sensational photography.  Here’s a taste of What You Missed Monday Morning on this FYX EPIC
  • This Monday life as I know it will be over.  I’ve had to concede to getting a real job back in engineering.  :-(   It won’t interrupt this blog however. You may see more guest posts to help me out,  but it’ll be business as usual.  I’ll just be much more busy.  Don’t be surprised to see me gain 10kg either.
  • Cyclosport Victoria is now allowing helmet cams in races.  I have to admit, I pushed the issue with this video but they understand the positive impact that something like this could have and just released this statement regarding cameras in races:

We are pleased to report that CSV has completed the investigation, and has ruled the following:

As of the 1st January 2010 the following shall apply:

The promoter shall be the sole decider as to whether or not a competitor or competitors shall be allowed to affix a video camera to the front and or rear of their bicycle during competition. If the promoter so allows it will be subject to the following:

1. The promoter must liaise directly with the Chief Commissaire and advise that he is allowing video cameras at that event.

2. Prior to the event, the bicycle, with camera mounted must be presented to the Chief Commissaire for checking.

3. The camera must be securely mounted (to the satisfaction of the Chief Commissaire) on a component of the bicycle such as the handlebars, front or rear forks, head tube or seat pillar.

4. Under no circumstances will cameras be allowed on / in clothing or mounted to helmets.

CSV recognises the value of new tools like these to promote the sport and is keen to encourage anything that grows participation and interest in the sport. As you would appreciate, our first responsibility is to provide safe racing for all which is why there has to be some caveats on their use.

  • Ever thought about giving cyclocross a go?  It’s the most punishing and horrible discipline in cycling.  You ride hard, your legs burn and you pray for the opportunity to get off and run.  Then you’re forced to run up a steep hill or a pool of sand and then you’re cursing the new heights of lactic acid you’ve attained. Then you hop back on your bike and there’s a brief respite before the lactic acid rushes back to the cycling muscles.  It’s pure EVIL. You can now try this in Melbourne here (below).  Can’t wait!

PsychoXDisclaimer: this is not a sanctioned race. It’ll be run in an informal manner by keen volunteers who simply want everyone to have a good time. Don’t take it too seriously!

Cyclocross is ace. Tomorrow is the seventh race into an eight race-day Cyclocross Crusade series here in Portland, Oregon. Around 1000 racers each day spread over about 10 categories. Check out the footage:

I race in the +200lb (90kg ) category and mix it up with the big boys.

Cyclocross is going to be epic. Been waiting for this for a long time.
  • Seb
    Cool dude.

Ah! My old stomping ground! Being a Gisborne boy, tis a visceral delight to gaze upon such a delightful meander through yonder fields.

Some nice climbing especially Toolern->Gisborne and Gis->Mt Macedon

    Great stuff

Wade-wan Kenobi can you tell me what part of
"4. Under no circumstances will cameras be allowed on / in clothing or mounted to helmets."
means we can rock helmet cams? I tried to run one at a SKCC crit, and Ernie nixed it (fair enough, I asked him if it was ok).

So, am I just confused by the above text, or missing something. I want to rock one in the Combine Race tomorrow, and also at the Tour de Bright.

    Coolies.

    tm
  • Brad
    TM - to clarify -

    1. What does `rock' mean in this context?
    2. The rule comes into affect on Jan 1 so unlikely to do it for SKCC or Bright before that date
  • Tim
Apologies, I should read before I write.

    Rock = use.
That point remains though, CSV wording sounds like no helmet attachments at all. So, it sounds like bar cameras would be ok.

So, something like MRCW's helmet cams could easily be attached to the bars.

    -t
  • Yes it sounds like cameras mounted to the handlebars are (going to be) ok...

CT, do you have a link to that particular text? I can't seem to find it on the CSV website...
  • Brad
I don't think it's been published yet on the CSV site - text was provided to CT (given this site raised the issue).

And yes my reading is cameras OK on seatpost, bars, stem or maybe even frame allowed but I'm sure more details will come to light. Just not helmet or clothing (ie chest etc)

    Hope that helps.
  • MtbSkillsCoachPat
    Interesting stuff re 'helmet cams'.
Any clues as to why they are not allowed to be attached on the helmet?
Is it seen as increasing the possibility that the helmet may be compromised in the event of an accident.
  • Brad
That's my understanding of the rationale - ie that it compromises the structure of the helmet. I think it's a pretty fair position and at least CSV took the matter seriously and have left the option open. CT might have to contact the organiser of the nationals at Ballarat this year for a dispensation....
  • JC
    ct,

good pics, good loop, and bad luck about landing that new job!!

hope all goes well on monday
  • Great to see helmet cameras are going to be "allowed" by CSV, especially how recently popular they have been for us. My only question - if you're not allowed to mount it to your helmet, presumably it is no longer a "helmet cam"???

    Ciao

amazing photos, I'm assuming it must be a dslr?... how does one carry a dslr on a 180km ride!?! I find my relatively small LX3 annoying after about 100km...
  • TC carries a massive backpack whenever he rides. It's like he's summiting Everest. He uses a full-frame Nikon xx beast of a camera. He really knows how to pick out the details of a ride to capture it.
  • amu
    Jon... Another LX3 user, fantastic!
I recently purchased one myself and have found when packed into a normal non figure hugging case i.e. case logic case, that it's quite annoying after the first 1/2 hour stuffed in the middle pocket on my jersey. Finding it annoying with the lens cover when on the bike?

    Ace photos as well fyxomatosis
  • Jon
Ah nice, I do love the LX3.
I find the same thing with the lens cap though. I'm thinking of replacing the long strap with a short wrist strap.

I'm also considering getting a small Exped Crush bag (small, padded waterproof liner) - hopefully it wont add any bulk and will keep my nerves at ease when it starts to rain!
  • Jon
    actually make that 5km...
  • pmark1bike
Is TC implying that you have calf implants? Great photos, I'm glad it was a 180kms "cruise"
