The Battle Of Sydney

November 13, 2009 · Comments

I came across a well produced video yesterday by a group campaigning for better cycling infrastructure and tolerance in Sydney.

In Melbourne I believe we face some very different issues and we have it pretty good.  Meanwhile cyclists in Adelaide are flapping their arms like chickens trying to stay safe in-between bike lanes.   Don’t get me started about motorists in Queensland.  And in Perth? They’re just chillin’ and doing their own thing without a worry in the world.

Numerous times over the past week I was sent this article which is boldly titled “Cyclists Do Not Have The Same Rights As Motorists On The Road“.  It immediately gets the reader in the wrong frame of mind to read it objectively.  However I seem to be reading this with a much different interpretation than thousands of other cyclists.  I read the article as saying that it’s unsafe for cyclists and motorists to be sharing some of the same roads (i.e. motorways) during peak hours and that alternate routes should be taken.

As cyclist and a motorist I agree that we should not flaunt our “rights” by traveling down some motorways or freeways at certain times.  When I see cyclists riding down busy freeways with traffic going in excess of 80km/hr meanwhile there’s a perfectly good path or road nearby I think it’s ludicrous and borderline suicide.  It has nothing to do with our rights and consideration for others – it’s just plain dangerous for everyone!  Just because it’s our right to use every road out there doesn’t mean it’s always good idea.

That said, it’s good that cyclists keep pushing for better infastructure and tolerance.  If we don’t push, we don’t get.

I’m off to watch Tiger Woods smash a golf ball around today at The Masters and then going to school you Aussies on how a cyclocross race is ridden.   Far from a typical day for me.

Enjoy your weekend, ride hard, stay cool, and be safe.  It’s gonna be a scorcher out there!

    PODIUM!

I saw Tiger play 10 years ago. He's no John Daly. See ya'll at PSYCHO-X tonight.
  • Here's an interesting link about changing the culture of a (small) city with regard to cycling & transport in general. The comparison photos are worth a look.

In some ways, I think it's never really about infrastructure v. number of cyclists. More important is the culture of all who travel using any means.

Let the cyclocross punishment commence. Beer and heckling a prerequiste.
  • Glad to see you left your helmet on. Never know when you might drop that bike, hey!?!

What a great video, I have no idea what exposure it got (outside of CT) but sadly I suspect it is vastly less than what it deserves.

That figure about the projected increase in peak hour traffic by 2013 was just frightening.

Seems unlikely the mainstream media would publish it, because they like to start the "discussions" with controversial, anti-cyclist "opinion" pieces, because they get the pageviews. Tragic.

Some days I just shake my head! The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) prints an article about the rapid approach of ‘Peak Oil’ on the very same day that Carl Scully, the ex-Minister for Roads and now consultant to builders of infrastructure, uses the SMH website to argue keenly that cyclists be confined to specially built cycle ways. We see endless government sourced urgings to eat less and exercise more while the Minister and Trustees for Centennial Park, one of the few places where cyclists in NSW can be assured of relatively safe cycling, studiously consider the placement of speed bumps all the way around the Grand Drive. We suffer a culture of media driven antagonism against cyclists just as annual bike sales climb ahead of annual car sales and Britain, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, Cuba, Vietnam, Italy, England and France – even Tasmania – all actively promote cycle based tourism (on the SMH website). good ride tonight WW, good to see a strong turn out to support a new and up and coming form of cycling here in OZ, let's hope the next one can bring even more riders!

And over time I think the more people who ride on the weekends for fitness that then drive to work during the week, the safer we will be. BUT, do we have that amount of time???? Govnerment spend bilions on drink driving but still people continue to drink and drive. And therefore the cyclist v's driver battle may always be around to some respect. So if we can all try and do the right things then I hope we all come out of it safely :)

Safe to say if i hadn't punctured my Psycho X victory would be in the bag...
Amazing race Wade, you are a powerhouse.

banning some roads in peak hour .... this can't be serious. Peak hour in melbourne and sydney at least are just huge car parks with banked up traffic. This is perfectly safe for cyclists. Infact I prefer to ride in peak hour because of this. Motorists should applaud every cyclist they see bacause its one less car on the road - holding them up on their journey......... I've never seen a bunch of cyclists causing a traffic jam

Now bike paths ... some of them are seriously dangerous

what were the results of the cross race? Post up a race report!
  • I'll definitely be posting a race report on Australia's first "good" cross race on Monday. I'm sure Fyxomatosis will be doing a better job at it than I will. Check back on Monday for full coverage

As for results, I was pretty much the only one there with gears on my bike so I took the title. Wasn't easy though - Shifter Dan was leading for a while and was always right on my tail.

is standing in the ocean holding an expensive bike above your head PRO or NOT PRO?

thanks for the lesson at psycho-x,
    that moots is something special.
  • Not PRO. Total wankerville.

So is showing up to a cross race with a titanium Moots while everyone else is on singlespeeds and baggy shorts. Not sure if I would look more like a dork for winning, or not winning! ;-)

it would have been a crying shame if you didnt take the moots to the podium. it seemed obvious you even had a strategy, let the race settle, then start putting the pressure on, very belgian.
still it was good to see a self-proclaimed roadie show some handling skills on the loose stuff, certainly not too many of them about.

And whilst the lovely photo was taken the real cyclist was still carrying on to Sorrento!!! haha
  • You missed out on some great coffee!
