No ride can start or finish without one of these.

The beautiful coastal roads of Mornington Peninsula in the 30 degree sun. Life is good…

Somewhere you’re rather be.

It’s not every day that you get caught behind a peloton of camels so I thought it was worth a snap.

You should have asked for a camel tow…

How did you find your new bike?

cyclingTips November 18, 2009 at 1:03 pm

+1

It's really nice. I had been using the old SRAM Force up until now and this new Force is fantastic. Huge improvement. The whole bike feels really fast (the Lightweights we're on sure contribute to that).

I've been quite spoiled over the past few months with Cycling Edge's bikes they've been lending me. The Parlees and the Independent Fabrications are unreal (as well as the Moots cross bike). And I'm not just saying that. They really are.

Which do you prefer: titanium or carbon fibre?

Pugno November 18, 2009 at 4:28 pm

Do you prefer the 1.68 or LW?

cyclingTips November 18, 2009 at 8:34 pm

I rate them equally – they're both amazing wheels. But the Edge 68's are much more practical. You cannot true the Lightweights and I'm not looking forward to the day I have a problem with them. They'll need to be sent back to Germany. The Edge's can be worked on anywhere.

Its good to know that the sun still exists, it seems to have gone awol in the Uk and has been replaced by its good friends rain, wind and grey clouds!

Well I've never ridden a bad titanium bike but I've ridden some pretty crap carbon bikes (that's just my experience and the nature of the Ti market). However, at the top end carbon will ride beautifully.

To be honest, it's really hard to tell. These top end bikes all feel so nice it's hard to pick one over the other. Plus the differences in wheels can change the feel of a bike dramatically. It would be interesting to ride a Ti vs Carbon frame with everything else being equal.

If I were to be spending thousands of dollars on a frame that I wanted to keep for a long long time I'd probably choose Ti. I really like the understated simple look of them and they wear really nicely. A carbon frame won't usually have that timeless look and probably won't wear as nicely either. But at the high end both will have a lifetime warranty.

If I were to own one high end bike in the world it would be this Independent Fabrication. I'll show photos of it sometime. It's Ti with carbon lugs. It was featured in Ride magazine a few months back. It's my “dream bike”

That is it!!!! I will not be reading Cyclingtips until the spring. I am in Sweden and your photographs have me green with envy. You must me loving it, looks super nice. I am longing for more than 6 hours light never mind sunny blue skys. Enjoy

Common CT stop scoping for chicks at Mills Beach. Get back out there and ride hard. Anyway what happened to this new job you've got. Seems the hours are pretty sweet.

I just ordered a new Force 11-28 for the Tour de Bright to roll with my Shimano, so I am glad you have rated it.

Saw the camels parked up near Trevor Barker oval/road down to Sandy Yacht Club on my run last night, but no Camel Tows. :(

Carbon vs Ti. What about the repairability of them. i.e. land a carbon bike hard and it could crack, Ti is repairable (probably expensive…?)

Is it PRO that the rider on the right hand side in the third photo should be sporting a fluro lime green wrist watch band not in keeping with his kit? I doubt it! A thorough dressing down is calling.
I couldn't help but notice the steed on Beach Road the other morning whilst spinning through Brighton. The O2' kit – perfection, but fluro wrist watch! Heaven forbid!

Justin Coulson November 19, 2009 at 12:30 am

Pretty sure i saw that review. Wasn't the bike about $18 000 and the reviewer said “If you buy this bike it will be the last bike you ever need to buy?” Sounds too good to be true.

cyclingTips November 19, 2009 at 1:46 am

I think it's a common misconception that carbon cannot be repaired. I'll be getting the Rapha Condor frame I have repaired as there's a nasty crack and hole punched through it. Will cost a couple hundred $.

cyclingTips November 19, 2009 at 1:48 am

I hope these photos will get you through the gray cold winter guys. Hang in there!

cyclingTips November 19, 2009 at 1:50 am

I've bought about a dozen “last bikes”.

How many bikes do you need? One more than you already have…

;-)

My new job is awesome. It keeps getting delayed so I'm enjoying every moment of my new found time off. It's much more difficult to enjoy your time off when looking for a job.

cyclingTips November 19, 2009 at 1:52 am

The flouro green calculator watch is so uncool that it's cool. Loaksy gets more comments on that watch than if he was wearing a Rolex!

If I was riding in the middle-east or Egypt, then camels would be high on my list of possible encounters.
In Australia…well that would evoke a “WTF? Face”. :-?

cyclingTips November 19, 2009 at 9:35 am

Yeah, lots of animals here that evoke my WTF face!

Apparently Australia has the largest population of wild camels in the world.
