A Sad Day For Australian Cycling…And More

LorraineAustralian cycling has lost a much loved and valuable member of the cycling community – Lorraine Collings.

http://www.carnegiecycling.com.au/?c=News&y=2009&nid=2377

I didn’t know Lorraine outside of cycling, but her contribution to the sport was truly outstanding and recognized by all.  We need more Lorraines in cycling.  And what a character she was.  If there were two things you never dared do with Lorraine during race sign-on it was:

1. Try to pay with a $50 note or in silver coins.

2. Try to race above or below your grade (she knew who was trying to sandbag or who was in over their head)

It always brought a smile to my face when riders tried to negotiate with her on these things.

Lorraine will be missed by everyone and there will be some big shoes to fill in the local race scene.  My condolences to Lorraine’s family and friends.

A sad day for a very down to earth genuine person.

Thanks for the heads up CT.

That's really sad news. She was an absolute gem to talk to.

Being new to Melbourne, she remembered my name from day one, which was a surprise considering the numbers of competitors at these events.

    Best regards to her family.

Lorraine will be genuinely missed by everyone who raced at Carnegie or the Southern Veterans Cycling clubs.
Her place in the clubs will never be filled!
I will never forget the genuine expressions of congratulations and commiserations, on how you raced each week.
    She will be sadly missed
    RIP Lorraine

She certainly made my introduction to racing very enjoyable and she also knew my name after 1 race. She always wanted to know how I got on and whether i made the break this time.

    Sad day.

This is so sad, there's going to be some big shoes to fill at CCCC. I only mentioned her on here last week saying that every club needs a Lorraine to stop people jumping grades.

    RIP Lorraine

WOW, i've been emailing Lorriane since the summer season started as I've been helping out the club on Sunday. This morning I emailed Lorriane and Mal saying that I could help more as I knew that she was ill…… Crazy.

    RIP Lorriane.

Amazing woman and a very sad loss. I cant imagine who could possibly fill her shoes. Remembering the names of a thousand cyclists and their grades cant be easy.

Full suspension bikes can be made as rigid as Hardtail bikes and in combination with carbon fiber frames will make an unbeatable combination. More importantly, the body will take less of a beating from the direct transfer of forces. However, be prepared to pay for the benefits.

    oh bugger.

Like everyone else my experience with her was at Glenvale sign ins. Turning up to find I only had a $50 in my wallet would send waves of utter fear through my brain.

My condolences to her friends and family, the Melbourne cycling/racing community wont be the same without her.

  • Rusteypipes

She knew everyone, even if you had miss a year of racing she still knew what grade you were in on your return.
You will be missed Lorraine RIP

Lorraine gave so much to our sport and made the world a better place. Her cheekiness and passion for life always brought a smile to my face. The look on her face in the photo is exactly how I’ll remember her. She was a gem and will be sorely missed.

Vale Lorraine – I always used you as the benchmark for how club racing should be run, and told anyone who would listen that if other races were run as well as Glenvale and Sandown because of you then they would all be top notch! You will be sorely missed by all.

That said, I'm going to turn up with a $50 tonight just because I can!! ;)

  • The man

Lorraine was a sweet and caring person, and made glenvale and sandown some of the best racing she did so much for us and cycling and she will be sorely missed.
I will always remember Lorraine as the person that people would dread if they had a 50 at registration but she was the nicest and friendlist person.

Racing will never be the same without Lorraine
    R.I.P

We will all miss Lorraine. While she was always determined to stay behind the scenes (if you think paying with a $50 was scary, try taking a photo of her and trying to publish it!) she was very proud of her perception as the best handicapper around and was quietly pleased to read all the positive comments about her in the recent grading thread on this blog. Don't worry, her records are up to date and there will be no change in CCCC's handicapping policy, just one of many legacies she has left us.
PS you are all more than welcome to enter with a $50 tonight. Just don't expect any change – it's all going to a good cause!

Such sad news. My deepest condolences to her family and to all the crew at CC – I feel privileged to say that my first ever race sign in was in-front of her.

Everytime I saw and spoke with Lorraine I had to take a second look as it was though I was talking to my late mother. My nephew and I both laugh knowing that! She was a great character and always welcomed me to race with the CCCC.

I'm sure the Vets on the Gold Coast will also miss her friendship!!
