Glenvale Helmet Cam!

December 21, 2009

You couldn’t ask for a better day for a bike race than yesterday.  Massive fields showed up at CCCC’s famously fast and furious Glenvale criterium yesterday and I was fortunate to catch all the action on the HD helmet cam that Race Day Rush send out to me.

As most of you know Lorraine Collings suddenly passed away last week which subsequently left a big gap in the vib and atmosphere of the pre-race sign-on ritual.  If you’ve ever seen the Seinfeld episode “The Soup Natzi” it was reminiscent of that (I’m being facetious of course – Lorraine was cheeky but had a heart of gold).  You’d line up at sign-in, pray you remembered your race license, count your money to make sure you didn’t mistakenly bring a $50, think of something witty to say, and then trade some banter with Lorraine.   She knew everyone by name and had the whole Victorian database for handicapping kept up in her head.  She will be missed.  Her funeral is being held today and details can be found here.

However, the CCCC volunteers did an outstanding job as usual and the morning with nearly 300 competitors took place without a hitch.  I won’t go through a race report as CCCC also does a fantastic job at posting this straight away and you can read their report here.

You can see the video that I took below.  Luckily I found myself in position to catch the race winning move by Mal Sawford (CCCC Prez) so you get to see it all!  Enjoy

Once again great video Wade!

Tim O December 20, 2009 at 10:46 pm

great video WW, loved it.

huphtur December 20, 2009 at 11:13 pm

Did you guys lap the peloton at 3:10?

cyclingTips December 20, 2009 at 11:17 pm

We did lap the peloton but it wasn't shown in the video. At 4:40 in the vid we got a gap and broke away from the bunch and for 30 minutes we swapped off turns at 51km/hr! Hurt like hell!

priestie December 20, 2009 at 11:23 pm

Nice stuff … must have been chewing the bars :)

Leigh December 20, 2009 at 11:49 pm

Nice one!

Will December 21, 2009 at 12:52 am

Another good video. What is the song?

mrcyclingworld December 21, 2009 at 1:06 am

Nice helmet cam work, wish there was more of it out there!

mrcyclingworld December 21, 2009 at 1:12 am

Actually are you sure it's not “handlebar cam”? It looks a little low to be helmet cam

JC December 21, 2009 at 1:54 am

Yo CT

You keep your head remarkably steady for the sake of the camera work. However, I'd like to see some speedo vision to verify the crazy speeds you're talking about. Merry Christmas!

priestie December 21, 2009 at 2:24 am

… or on a TT bike with that low profile. :))

Bob December 21, 2009 at 2:59 am

Sigur Ros I believe. Which song, not sure. I have too much of their stuff to find it atm…

Andrew December 21, 2009 at 3:54 am

exactly what helmetcam are you using? it is great quality…!

GeoffreyP December 21, 2009 at 4:39 am

I can confirm that the Cam was firmly attached to Wade's handlebar!

GeoffreyP December 21, 2009 at 4:41 am

I was one of the rolling Marshals in C'Grade and can confirm that it was the fastest A grade group that I have seen at Gelnvale. It was crazy! B'grade average for the hour was 42.4kms.

toneredd December 21, 2009 at 6:20 am

Bloody hell Wade, 50 kmh average, how old and how much do you weigh?

It's rides like that that inspire me to push it against riders 20 years younger and not give up.

Top effort.

Out on a limb tip for the road nationals, W.W. top 12.

cyclingTips December 21, 2009 at 8:26 am

It's Hoppípolla by Sigur Ros. An Icelandic band who are one of my favorites.

cyclingTips December 21, 2009 at 8:27 am

That's right – I just called it a “helmet cam” because that's what it is, however I had to mount it on my handlebars (sorry – no tri bars!) to keep Cyclesport Victoria happy.

cyclingTips December 21, 2009 at 8:29 am

It's a Sony HXR-MC1. A sports video site called Race Day Rush lent it to me so I can get some summertime footage while it's snowing in Canada.

I also have a GoPro. It's much easier to use and mount, however the quality isn't as good. But the price is about a tenth as much.

I just put up a new HD version that's much better quality.

cyclingTips December 21, 2009 at 8:31 am

I may LAST 12 laps in the nationals! I definitely won't come in top 20 or even 30. Those guys are 2-3 levels (if not more) above me. Truly amazing athletes.

I'm 36 and I weigh 80kgs. Middle of the road in all respects!

Tim December 21, 2009 at 8:40 am

Good video, but could have stood to be half the length
The music needs to be fassssster. Whaddabout some Sepultura.
Dreamy and nice, but….

cyclingTips December 21, 2009 at 8:43 am

I'll save Sepultra for another day that carries less significance to Mal and many others racing in Lorraine's honor. But that's not obvious to the people who weren't there. Maybe I'll make another version later…

kylieonwheels December 21, 2009 at 9:00 am

More helmet cam please!! Very motivating for the injured :-D

AB December 21, 2009 at 9:11 am

I must say.. As a female, I enjoyed the handlebar's perspective….

AB December 21, 2009 at 9:14 am

Music was perfect, and the whole vid was great.
Pity you couldn't capture Mal as he crossed the finish line, it was one of those special moments to witness.

TMcG December 21, 2009 at 10:37 am

Hi Wade

is it on you tube, I can't see a link to click on

thanks!

cyclingTips December 21, 2009 at 10:39 am

Sorry – I didn't put it on YouTube. They always remove the music even though I've purchased it.

See if you can view it here: http://vimeo.com/8298412

Penny December 21, 2009 at 2:00 pm

Thanks for sharing the footage of Mal's special win at Glenvale yesterday. I of course would have loved to have seen the finish footage as well, given I wasn't there. I wonder whether Doug thought to turn on the club video camera to get it on tape – even though the video camera definitely wasn't needed to decide on the placings!

Jeff December 21, 2009 at 5:41 pm

Nice video Wade, if I didn't get out for a couple hours in the drifting snow and -10C temperatures yesterday I might be jealous. But seriously, what's with the poncey soundtrack?

Tim December 21, 2009 at 11:41 pm

Ahhh that's fair enough – wasn't aware of that.

Tim December 21, 2009 at 11:43 pm

I've not tried this, but, can you rename your mp3 before embedding it in your video editor (presumably not Premiere or FinalCut) or with a hex editor, thus fooling their music copyright bot, as it won't be able to check IDV3 tags (the bot might run deeper analysis, not sure)

The top ten A graders rolling turns at 50kmh+……..my heart rate at 178 over 30min verified the speeds…..trust me!

MalSawford December 22, 2009 at 1:27 am

Great work WW and thanks again for the assistance on Sunday. Perhaps next time you follow me round though you could change lens? That must have been a wide angle, either that or I need to vote for slimming black knicks for the next CCCC kit.
I have to say it looks much easier on tape than it was in real life, it doesn't really capture the speed through the corners when the camera moves at the same speed as the bunch.

shanebrown December 22, 2009 at 3:08 am

congrats on some great footage Wade, Yes Mal, we put a 0.7X wide angle lens on the camera. It helps us to stabilize the shots especially for all the mountain bike / adventure racing footage we film for use on RACEDAYRUSH.com

Great vid Canada. Adelaide has now secured a traffic free crit course in the cities parklands and with it being new to everyone there are some teething problems. Passing other grades is one and I am sending this footage to my club here in Adelaide to show them how mixed grade racing can be done safely and still enjoyable for all grades. Mainly through education of riders with the addition of rolling marshalls. I remember getting the speeches from Mal and Frank regarding passing other grades safely giving them enough room to corner etc. Your vid shows at least two perfect examples of that. The effect of your work with CT Wade is far reaching and I believe a great addition to the cycling community. Cheers

cyclingTips December 22, 2009 at 5:20 am

Thanks Shanin. Always nice to hear stuff like that!

pmark1bike December 22, 2009 at 8:48 am

Hi Wade I mounted my GoPro on my frame facing rearward this morning, good to see faces!
