Wanna Take a Ride on The 2010 World Championships Course?

January 16, 2010

Today I’ll be making my journey to Adelaide.   I wish I could have been there last night to see Hendo take such an exciting win in the crit last night.

If you haven’t’ noticed yet there’s a Twitter feed in the right column of this page underneath the sponsor’s ads. This is a feed of all the cyclists and teams racing in the TdU.  Follow this feed and you’ll be getting a variety of TdU news directly from the source faster than the speed of Hendo’s sprint.

Since I’ll be in the car all day I thought I’d leave you with this video.  I thought I’d post it since there’s so much talk from Lance Armstrong about doing the Worlds next year and how he’d like to see the course.  Well here it is!

While we were racing in the Bay Crits in Geelong a couple of weeks ago Koen de Kort,  Kris de Tymmsy,  Tiffany Cromwell and myself decided to do a couple of laps of the Melbourne 2010 World Championship course.

See Garmin maps and profile here (press the “play” button)

It took us about 45mins of easy pedaling (except for the hills) to complete one lap of the course.  I cut much of the boring stuff out of the video but made sure I kept in every turn, roundabout, climb, descent or anything else that might be of interest.  This got it down to a manageable 15min.

For those of you reading who are unfamiliar with the area, Geelong is a small city about 85km SW of Melbourne.  The riders start in the center of Melbourne, ride an uneventful flat journey (unless there’s crosswinds) 85km towards Geelong (see map below).

Melb-Geelong

Once the riders hit Geelong, they’ll have to do multiple laps of the 16km circuit.  The elite men will do 11 laps (259.9km total), the U23 men 10 laps (159km total), and the elite women will do 8 laps (127.2km total).

You can find heaps more useful info on the official website.

The elite men will have to do a total of about 3000m of climbing.  The Mendrisio course featured about 4750 meters of climbing.  Not that this means much because it’s the gradient of the climbs in Geelong that are going to make it tough for the sprinters.  I’m tipping it won’t come down to a bunch sprint.  The hills are tough enough that it will be a race of attrition and there won’t be sprinters left at the end.  It’ll suit guys like Simon Gerrans and Cadel Evans extremely well.  My guess is that it’ll come down to a small group of Classics riders who will punch it out in the end.

My tip for PROs:  put on your 11t-25t cassette.  You’ll be feeling it by the 8th time around!

There will be announcements shortly officially, but I can tell you there will be a participant ride on the Sunday morning of the men's road race. It will include riding the course, plus more...
This event will be massive and every cycling fan should get down to Geelong and support the aussies riding.

I hope the people who live in those mansions will be happy to have thousands of people standing on their front lawns come the end of September!

Haha I live in one of the "mansions" along the river on Barwon Blvd and I reckon we've got the best view in the world!

Great to see the WC route. It is going to be a great event. My money will be on Cadel!!

From my point of view, it is also great to watch the riders and the diferent styles. It seems that the rider in the O2 kit would benefit from dropping his saddle a little...

    Thanks for the post!

If you're looking for a great ride just outside Geelong, I found this to be quite enjoyable. The bells beach section (56km Mark) is the obvious highlight! I started from Geelong but you might get a chance to run into a world champion if you start from Barwon Heads.

haha! That's a lot of my training routes!

See what split you can get over the 'Ugly Sisters' coming out of Bells - as you follow the road around with the beach on your right, you take the first right and have three short, sharp rises. My best is only 3:43 :( all three of them have a nice little kick though.

I'm so jealous! I'm sitting in Chicago, riding in toasty -2 degree weather. Check out the contrast... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aF-ukiC6X0

Great video Wade, I'm sure it was hard keeping the eyes off lead riders backside!
  • My cartography skills are shocking, is that the back road or along the Hwy, I understand its running the back road now? ... and shit I can't wait! :)

    Gerrans for me too!!!
  • Nick
Just residential streets, so neither really....

Great video, nice audio mixing too. Watching that has made me very homesick though, I'm getting a bit sick of riding in the snow!

I can't see to many sprinters getting over that climb after the 10th or 11th time. My money's on Gerrans!!

Hey CT, for those of us not blessed to be living in Melbourne/Geelong can I suggest doing a 2nd scout but from a supporters point of view? I plan on coming down, but looking at the maps, where I will stand etc and how I support the race will just be a lottery without a little insight prior to the big day!

Am I better off riding from Melbourne on the morning or is that a crazy ride to do? Should I watch the start in Melbourne and expect to get around to somewhere on the course?

Anyway, just me trying to get some sneaky inside tips!
  • Scott
    PS great video!
  • Nick
As someone who lives in G town, I'd recommend against either riding from Melbourne on the day (boring!!! and dangerous) or watching the start and driving down (as it'll be packed).

Get here a day or so beforehand, enjoy some of the great rides we have around the region & do some laps yourself, pick a spot on the course and kick back on the day and enjoy!

Now I know where all those McMansions are, I'm guessing the banks must call it Mortgage-ville. That thing in Koen's pocket looked too big to be a pump (wouldn't he carry a gas cyliner anyway?) so I'm assuming it's a small crow bar to jemmy open a few doors. Guaranteed those McMansions would each have 60 inch plasmas in every room. Now just to work out a way of getting one in the backpocket..

What was the day/time this ride was done again? It looked nice and quiet, almost cyclist-friendly.
  • Todd!
Ahhhh, way to make me home sick! Hahaha! The last 30 secs was not on the route, you took a wrong turn :-P That house at 6:30 is pretty awesome hey!?! The blokes been building it for years! The best climb is up to the right at 9:30... word on the street is there will be an area to the left of the one way bridge that will be cleared and a temporary bridge will be made across the river lower than the current one, which will mean that climb will start lower and drag up out of the car park...

A tip for anyone else who is giving it a shot, when you get over the 2nd climb and start on the flat for 2km, the intersection where they stop in the video has a big bump that if you hit at full noise, you can get a bit of air... (I used to ride home that way!)

If you are doing a reccy ride, the police quite often sit on the down hill section before the one way bridge and you can easily end up over the speed limit down there...

Cant wait till September! I'm 2 mins from the 2nd climb behind the school - and yes, all the floor space is taken! :-D
  • We heard a couple different versions about what the final lap would look like. At the end of the video we turn right and take another right and then left into the finish. This was the more complicated of the two versions we heard. The other possible version would be a simple right turn (the block before we turned right in the video) into a straight line to the finish (which is about 500m up the road).
  • Todd!
The map shows that they take a right the street earlier (Moorabool street - nice uphill drag ;-) ) to the finish... I liked that you short cut the round about... thats what I had to do to keep up with my mate when I rode with him... he disappeared over the next 300m though! The talk I have heard is that they are planning on removing the difficult traffic islands as well. Time will tell.

Our planning has already begun for riding, watching, etc. its going to be great fun! Hope to cheer home an Aussie for gold!
  • i feel like you took all of these songs off my itunes. fun video. makes me want to come down to australia.
  • Great video, the first hill looks nasty. Where did everyone (re. Lance on Twitter) get the idea it was a flat course? Maybe the ride from Melbourne to Geelong is...

haha i love the police siren around 12.55 mins when they run the red light.

    Great Vid CT.
  • Can't wait for the World's!!!
  • AaronU
DJ WW. great insight. I'd love to be on a motorbike filming all that when the race is on.

Why is Tymmsy wearing arm warmers in January?
  • tymmsy
We had been for a ride earlier that morning along the coast with a cool sea breeze. After a coffee we headed out on the Worlds course. By this stage the Sun had a bite to it, so I kept the Arm warmers on to avoid getting burnt. Call me crazy, but thats why & now you know.
