It’s Not About The Race

January 20, 2010

TDU Day 2-2-2

What other sport in the world can you venture into the countryside,  ride on the same roads as one of the biggest events in the world, shoot the breeze with countless other passionate fans while you’re waiting for the race to arrive, and then get within a foot of guys like Lance Armstrong when he goes by!?    I think that the accessibility in cycling is the key to its popularity.   Accessibility to the pro athletes and accessibility to the lifestyle.  A good proportion of cycling fans also ride bikes themselves.  You can ride the exact same bike as your favorite cyclist – or better if you like.   How many F1 fans own a car like their sporting heroes drive?  How many footie fans still play footie?    Cycling is a people’s sport. There’s few other sports on Earth where people connect with is so strongly.  Why else would so many thousands of people take the week off work and make their way out into the middle of nowhere just to see the peloton scream by for under 30 seconds a stage?  It’s hard to explain why we do this, but we love it!

Today I started to get the hang of how to do the Tour Down Under.  The whole race is based in Adelaide and the stages are not very far away.  This makes it easy to ride to a section of the stage with your mates, grab a coffee, see an exciting part of the race, then finish off your ride fueled with that heart pumping adrenaline you just experienced.   You can do this day after day. There’s no stress of switching hotels and going to another city for the next stage.  I’m sure the riders love it for this as well.

We ended up on Checker Hill which is a $#^% of a climb.  My computer read 20% and it went on forever.  My legs were burning and as I thought this couldn’t go on for much longer I saw a “KOM 200m” sign!  200m is a LONG way when it’s 20%.  I cracked!

The cool thing about watching these races is that you can make-believe that you’re in the race.  When you climb up a road like Checker Hill and there’s thousands of fans you can’t help but imagine for a second that you’re in the race.  If you were one of the ones riding today, don’t deny that for a brief moment you didn’t pretend that you were in a break away up that climb with thousands of mad fans cheering you on.   I know I did!

TDU Day 2-3-2Checker hill - I noticed that most of the pros had 25t cassettes on for this climb.

After our hours of anticipation and 30 seconds of race action we had an intense hammer session back to Adelaide through the stunning George Road with a bunch of similarly pumped up fans/cyclists.  In our own little race home it was VIC v.s. ACT v.s QLD v.s NSW v.s. SA v.s WA.  It was one of the biggest smashfests I’ve had all year.  VIC cleaned up if you’re wondering…

If you weren’t at the race you probably heard that Greipel won before any of us did.  This is the funny thing here.  I’m not so sure that the race is the most important thing most of us are here for.  The race itself just creates this massive energy, vibe and atmosphere to the city.  The rest of it is left to us, the fans.

Tomorrow is going to be a scorching 40C.  If you read this in time I’ll be at the SRAM tent at 9:30ish tomorrow and going for a ride up to Stirling at 10:30 to watch the race.  SRAM will be providing a light breakfast and coffee to any fellow CT’ers who come.  This is an open invite to all of you.  SRAM is at the bottom on Greenhill Road at Feathers Hotel - you can’t miss it.

Arthur Vichot, the most obscure PRO in the TdU.  His fanclub was out in full force today.  I’m gonna see if I can hit Arthur up for an interview.

IMG_1451The most stylish PRO rider on the road today.  Carrying a pump in pocket is not PRO however.  CO2 cartridge or support vehicle (preferably European station wagon) is the only acceptable form of puncture repair.

TDU Day 2-7The peloton making its way up the 20% leg thrasher.  I was surprised that only a couple guys were only slightly off the back at this point in the climb. (photo by James Broadway – more iPhone magic)

Great post and pictures, it’s nice to get a different and interesting perspective on the race.

The guy in the CT kit got some good coverage in the highlights package on SBS 2 last night, in a big crowd you could clearly read the Cycling Tips logo on the kit. Well done!

  • alexmather

Brilliant post. Accessibility is definitely huge but most of us don't ever get a chance to see the Tdu, Tdf, etc. in person. Luckily I live in Philly so I get to see a few big name pros race around once a year, but in Philly most of the spectators are there to drink and party and wouldn't know a derailleur from a domestique.

I think you touched on the real source of passion: we participate(d) in the sport. I am truly passionate about one other sport, a sport you know very well from your days north of the border: hockey. Growing up in an East Coast US city means hours and hours of hockey in the winter. 8 hour games with no subs! Hockey fans are some of the most passionate, loyal fans of any sport and I'd guess it's because we all played and maybe even still play.

The other reason cycling fans are so passionate: it ours. It takes years to navigate the sport, let alone look PRO. Its not a mainstream sport in most parts of the world and we love to feel part of our little exclusive club of spandex and lycra clad hammerers!

    Awesome post Wade!

I wish I could be there to see the TdU, or even catch it on TV! Unfortunately, I don't get versus, and that means I can't watch it until the last few stages online.
The small comment about the CO2 cartridge or support vehicle made me laugh; I would love to see more of those tongue in cheek tip posts again!

Very good point about cycling being a peoples' sport, not to mention how many people use the bicycle as a tool for everyday life. You drove home the point yourself when you went out and rode crits with the pros. But the accessibility goes all the way down to us lowly Cat 4/5 riders, who – by grace of having a category all our own – can get out and do the same rides as the guys with the better legs.

Matt touched on my question. Is there any way to watch any of the stages online? Otherwise, I'll just keep coming back here for the good pictures.

Meanwhile, I think I have to lower my nose, which I turned up against the Sky kits on a previous CT post. In shots of the mass peloton, amid the chaos of colors, the Sky cyclists stand out as having a touch of class.

Great report. It's always interesting to hear the stories of the people who saw the race first hand, and fair play to you for getting up Chucker Hill! Keep the stories coming all week!

  • http://www.atomicecho.com Alex Murray

I thought the most pro puncture repair kit (when not racing) is the Zefal HPX pump under the top tube with a tub neatly folded under the saddle?

  • GDWheeler

I think I saw a brief flash of CT kit on the british coverage.

  • Jenny

If you keep interviewing people like Bruyneel, Hincapie & McEwen you won’t be there as a spectator, you’re going to be hosting the live broadcast!

  • http://twitter.com/Fennessy Matt

Great post CT, I'm really enjoying your coverage of the TDU, insights you won't get anywhere else. You are right on the money with cycling's accessibility, I'm about to head off on the work commute and you just know I'll be a weekday world champ!

you did feature on the SBS coverage last night, my wife wondered who this CT guy was I was pointing out, she thought she had her head around all the pros competing…

  • davidrafferton

Yep that was WW on Checker Hill in his CT kit. Stood out from the crowd really well! ;)

  • http://www.cyclingTipsBlog.com cyclingTips

Ha! I just saw the CT kit on SBS. It wasn't me, it was the fellow in the photo above. Good on him!

  • pmark1bike

You can get live updates on http://twitter.com/SantosTDU_Live

Nice One CT… How freakn steep was that hill!!! We drove up it and almost stalled.

It was just an amazing atmosphere and I'll be back for more next year – Next time though, it'll be purely as a spectator.

    Soooo tired.

  • Jack D

    Another great post CT.

Did you mean to call it Chucker Hill in the second photo?

Awesome that Cadel rode home with you guys too, that is him smashing it in the rainbow jersey 2nd wheel right?

An interview with Arthur Vichot would be great, all jokes aside I hear he's a future big French hope. His dad Fred was pretty handy too BTW, in the '80s he won 2 stages in the TDF and 1 in La Vuelta. Funnily enough his cycling archive shows the old man wearing a Skil jersey very similar to today's Pro team.

What's the deal with Tim Roe too, did I really hear King Lance had signed him?

  • Chris M

    Great post CT,

Was fun up on Checkers Hill, the positive energy from all the spectators/cyclists was great to see. To be able to get within 50cm from Lance/Cadel on the hill you have just ridden is pretty special (with all the fans screaming for you as you ride over the top picturing yourself in the lead of the race) .

I'll have to get myself a Co2 canister rather than that pump :-) Wearing the CT kit I had lots of people ask me about the site or if I was WW, amazing how much its recognized and I think you have a couple of new readers as well.

Keep up the good work, looking forward to the next CT group ride. Unfortunately, back at work in Melb today, so now relying on CT and SBS to bring me my daily cycling fix.

Ps I think the 3rd photo is David Kemp going over the top of Checkers Hill not Tim Roe.

  • Chris M

    Hey Matt,

SBS has some pretty good coverage.
    http://www.sbs.com.au/cyclingcentral/

If you cant access that from your location Pete from CyclingFans post links to live feed and highlights from the TdU and most cycle races.

Radio Adelaide provide good race chat and commentary throughout the entire stage.

  • Marc G

Great post. You have definately convinced me to take a week off next year and head over for the TDU! Even the misses thinks its a good idea!!

  • http://hatfullofsky.net/littlewords lauren

I heard that comment about Tim Roe too! I think he's been signed to Lance's development team. The commentators mentioned something about a LiveStrong group.

  • Paul Adler

Great post Wade. It's a real pity the TDU clashes with the Audax Alpine Classic. Maybe have to start alternating every second year.

  • Mike M

I also saw a full Cycling Tips kit when watching the TDU coverage on Versus in the US. Here is a picture of the TV with the DVR paused. http://www.flickr.com/photos/24353313@N02/42911...

You have a great blog. Have a great time watching the TDU this week.

  • Ian Turner

It sounds like an awesome experience. Now I don't know if I should go to the ICU World Champs in Melbourne in October or skip it and go to the TDU. Decisions decisions.

  • MtbSkillsCoachPat

    Great Post CT.

    Wishing I were there.

Keep the love flowing in from Radelaide.

  • MtbSkillsCoachPat

    Great Post CT.

    Wishing I were there.

Keep the love flowing in from Radelaide.

  • MtbSkillsCoachPat

    Hey CT.

Just looked at the top 2 images again. They are absolutely cracking good photos. Radealide has the blue'est of blue sky eh?

  • pmark1bike

Thats funny I sent Wade almost the same pic! http://twitpic.com/z0fsr , isn't it strange how all the CT followers saw this guy!!!

  • Doyletime

Pretty sure thats Kempy not Tim Roe in that photo

  • http://thehotcrew.com huphtur

I spotted him too: http://twitpic.com/z0mn4 (and I win for biggest TV)

  • Ian Turner

Coming from Perth with a bike gets expensive.

  • freshlegs

It's great that the ABC cover the race on radio, but the commentary is embarrassing. The presenter calling the last meters of todays stage didn't even know the winners names as they crossed the line.

  • pmark1bike

Chris M is more recognizable than Wade! I think we are all a little to obsessed with Cycling Tips!!! Hey Dutchy is this a “mines bigger than yours” competition? ;-)

  • pheresy

Sure am looking forward to being back in France in 2010 for Le Tour and L'Etape and sending all you guys photos and twittering from the Tourmalet.

This rad post reminded me how rad being roadside at Le Tour then backing it up with a smashfest with 9000 other riders (whilst Beaker Brown beakers like Beaker from the muppets for us to slow down, “coz it sure is another 150km to go Timbo, and it's 37 degrees, and the Ventoux sure will be hard”) will be once again.

You better be there this time Wade!

  • pheresy

I could be wrong about this, but it could be some post processing. Lots of photos on here (James Broadway's in particular) seem to have a lot of saturation (or vibrancy) that looks like a bit of Lightroom or similar dialling up of colour.

I could be wrong, and it could be filter based, it just looks that way.

  • Greg H

Or you could burn off the 8 x light requirements etc etc and orange flouro vests and just man up and head to Radelaide?

  • Jack D

If you start working it now, you might swing a half decent loaner from a friendly local Melbourne bike shop for a few days? No need to bring one over then.

Simon at Total Rush is a good guy, has a lot of sweet Specialized bikes, and is always keen to do some sort of deal.

Maybe someone here can help out?

  • Jack D

We were right – Tim Roe is listed on the Livestrong Under 23 team, owned by Lance and managed by Axel Mercx. They do races like Tour of Qatar, etc. Noticed they had Paris Roubaix on their calendar too. Impressive.

What's Jack Borbridge doing in the TDU by the way people, he was the biggest thing last year?

  • Daniel_S

Jack's been racing pretty aggressively – he solo'd off the front near the end of Stage 1 (I think, or possibly Stage 2) and he was in a break today…

  • http://thehotcrew.com huphtur

    Totally. Bring it!

  • Ian Turner

Thanks for the info. That's great. I will check them out.

  • Caboose

cmon CT….. ANOTHER rider ID fail. That would D. Kemp in the uni sa kit on the de rosa. You are not turning into the literary version of Phil Liggett are you?!

  • pmark1bike

On the same subject, does anyone have or know were to borrow a bike in Adelaide over the weekend for a mate of mine heading over there tonight? He is 6ft + Thanks.

  • Sean Doyle

It's funny, the 4th photo, the girl on the shoulders, is the one that makes my emotions for cycling run high. I have four kids of my own and I see unbridled passion in everything they do. Let's hope the spectacle of the TDU makes an impression on the girl that she ends up riding a bike for the love of it. Let's hope it pushes cycling more into the minds of all those it reaches minds and becomes more ingrained into our society.

Keep up the fantastic work Wade and your contributors.

  • kylieonwheels

What are you doing??!?!?! You can't swim in Adelaide!! Their beaches are like a buffet for sharks!! ;-)

  • Sean Doyle

Haha! I just realised I posted in the wrong blog thread. I was refering to the other thread with all the great photos. Don't I look like a chump.

  • xrider64

Top work Wade! – as a proud Sydney wearer of your Cycling Tips kit (drawing lots of favourable comment by the way), surely the real stylin' question we're all asking you is – “when you gonna help Footon-Servetto with their kit”….dear God, is that the worst kit in the history of cycling EVER???…my baby boy puts out stuff that colour but I'm sure as hell not gonna slather myself in it and then roll around in a road of wet tarmac! I know it's a bit stupid to question the “pro-ness” of the whole thing (since they obviously are!) but man, that must have been designed by a blind school!

I think this is the question at the front of the minds of all your loyal style focused riding readers. I think you need to address this question post TDU with the utmost urgency! Waiting for your stylin judgement as ever….

    Cheers.

  • jamesworrell

Athlete accessibility all week has been fantastic. When you are able to go up to guys like Jens and Stuey and grab a quick photo as they mount up for the crit, or look over on the ride back into Adelaide after Hahndorf and realise you are smack bang next to Lance, you know you are having a special week.

Bugger TdF. TDU has been fantastic. Willunga tomorrow. Bring it on.

  • Todd!

Spotted a fella just outside Goolwa in CT knicks and Capo socks with the Challenge Ride jersey on… I was having a mechanical and a c**t of a day! Survived and finished in reasonable time… (I was the only bastard in all orange with matching Jawbones…)

  • Me

For accessibility hard to beat Giro. Being at the Madonna del Ghisallo at a stage start was pretty cool, seeing the Mass for the riders
Less crowds, great food, $$ goes further.
    Fab climbs, espec in Dolomites.

But – must do TDF one day…..

  • MickyC

CT – do you know if James uses the standard camera on the iphone for those pics or does he use some other downloaded application?

  • http://www.cyclingTipsBlog.com cyclingTips

it's just a little bit of color and light adjustment in Lightroom. It can sure liven up a photo!
