For accommodation recommendations, we stayed at the Mantra Apartments in Frome which was an ideal location - only a block up from Rundle Street East which has good bars, restaurants and cafes and the odd dodgy nightclub if that's your thing, and there is a bike shop further up the road. Not all the apartments have washing machines so if anyone books make sure you ask - ours didn't and handwashing kit is a drag.

Agree with your comments Wade about how to soak up the atmosphere - we also did the community challenge ride which was a good way of fitting in a longer ride - I thought it was really well organised.

SW

My buddy posted a link to your blog. Good stuff. I lived in Adelaide for 5 months... the quality and diversity of cycling routes is simply outstanding... and the weather is sunny almost every day.
Still planning my escape from Canada!

yep I second this. I did the family holiday thing as well and we rented a small apartment near Glenelg beach, it was fantastic. Most days we got back from the finish of the race with plenty of time for my 18 month old to have a good splash around at the beach.

Most stages are quite close to Adelaide really. It's quite workable to ride out to the stage with your riding buddies, meet the wife and kids at some prearranged spot. Change, relax, watch the race come past, then do the local shops over or wineries, (if your other half is more into shopping than bikes - like mine is).

Anyway, for those that don't dare ask to piss off for week of riding with their buddies while the Mrs takes care of things at home, the TDU can still be a fantastic family holiday. You may need to make some compromises, and if you need to take a day off from the TDU I recommend the stage that finishes furthest away, the Victor Harbor stage? That's what I did anyway. Seeing the stages where you finish closer to town, you can get home quicker to maximize family time etc...

My wife who's not into bikes at all ended up getting quite caught up in the whole atmosphere of it all and found the whole thing very enjoyable.
