San Vigilio di Marebbe – Plan de Corones

May 26, 2010

No real changes in GC after last night’s monster uphill TT to Plan de Corones.  Cadel is creeping up every day and making time on Basso.  The question is, will there be enough stages left for Cadel to make up the time he needs?   A few of us were talking about this the other day and it just might work out quite well for Cadel.  His BMC team has been completely destroyed so it’s good that he’s not defending the Pink Jersey.  If he can just make up enough time in the final few stages to slip past Basso without wasting energy being on the defense it may work out in his favor.  Looking at the stages ahead it’s very possible for Cadel to still win.

Anyway, here are the photos from last night.  I’m trying out a way of displaying these spectacular photos in a larger format so bear with me if the page looks a little messy.

You’ll also notice that this is a completely ad-free page brought to you by Cycling Edge (Topolino, Edge wheels and Parlee, MOOTS, and Independent Fabrication), Wattbike (the ultimate ergo), Bikeforce (Giro Ionos Helmets for $299), RIDE Magazine (My favorite Aussie cycling mag – enter their TdU competition!), and Milani (nice handmade Italian bikes).  ;-)

Lloydie held onto the King of the Mountains jersey, but just barely. He’s leading Basso and Cadel by only four points.

Garzelli, the eventual winner of the stage

Is Team Sky going to have buyers remorse come July?  We’ve all seen one-hit-wonders in the Grand Tours before.  It’ll be interesting to see how he goes in the TdF.  Wiggins has gone from 7th to 24th (lost 24mins) in the past 2 stages.

Good ol’ Canucklehead Michael Berry putting the smack down.  The other Canadian in the race, Svein Tuft didn’t wear his national time trial jersey yesterday and got fined 2,500 Swiss francs.  Knowing Svein, he was probably too humble and didn’t want to show-off by wearing it.  Either that, or he forgot it at home.

Richie, how many times do we have to tell you: SHOE COVERS! You could have held onto second…;-)

Arroyo keeps the lead, but he’s loosing his grasp!

Sirotti really needs a sensor clean, badly.

That was a fair old hill last night.

Nick May 26, 2010 at 4:03 am

Richie, just playin it cool.

Hamish Moffatt May 26, 2010 at 4:13 am

How can Garzelli win such a tough stage after losing 18 minutes in a single stage previously and 9 in another? Saving himself massively, or spent the whole rest day getting a transfusion?

marcus_moore May 26, 2010 at 4:29 am

Did anyone see the mechanic running beside Arroyo near the end with the spare bike – the mechanic 'dropped off the pace” over the last few hundred metres but it did seem comical at the time!!

Serious climbing there – would love to see a power output reading similar to yours from the hotdog laps on Sunday Wade.

LeighSchilling May 26, 2010 at 4:32 am

Looks like his wide angle lens had dust and road debris on it. Not hard to get by the looks of that road, if you can call it that.

Notso Swift May 26, 2010 at 4:33 am

How well is Porte Doing, he may have dropped a spot but he still put time in to Sastre! (Not to mention all the young riders)
I think Lloyd needs a breakaway tomorrow, or maybe S19 which has about 3 climbs
Hadn't noticed him riding it before but Arroyo's bike is… err.. nice… (I guess it just proves you can even make a Pinnarello look ugly)

Matt B May 26, 2010 at 4:34 am

how can the photos on cyclingnews be so bad??? Sirotti you are king on the lens.

leighschilling May 26, 2010 at 4:36 am

Wade, the larger images look great sans Advertisement and comments column. If only everyone had widescreen monitors so everything can fit.

Priestie May 26, 2010 at 4:44 am

This might be of some interest …. (W/kg estimates from Zoncolan)
Source: Google power group (Thanks Mick :P)

I estimated W/kg from the climb of the Zoncolan using time checks I took @ 10 km, 5 km, 3 km, and 1 km to go for Basso and Evans. I assume extraneous mass (bike, clothes, etc) was body mass / 8. I then assume CdA = 0.3 meter-squared / 50 kg body mass. Further, Crr = 0.5%, mass density = 1.1 kg/cubic meter, and drivetrain efficiency = 97% . I assume uniform grade between “time checks” (this affects only wind resistance, which is small and uncertain anyway).

Results:
Basso:
10 km to 5 km: 6.10 W/kg
5 km to 3 km: 6.56 W/kg
3 km to 1 km: 5.74 W/kg
1 km to 0 km: 5.36 W/kg

Evans:
10 km to 5 km: 6.10 W/kg
5 km to 3 km: 6.18 W/kg
3 km to 1 km: 5.38 W/kg
1 km to 0 km: 4.87 W/kg

Net VAM:
Basso: 1773 m/hr
Evans: 1717 m/hr

In contrast, Simoni was reported @ 1850 m/hr on the same climb in 2007.

So nothing super-natural this year, for sure. Typically in the Tour the top climbers are close to Coyle's 6.7 W/kg.

Tactically, it seems Evans made a mistake trying to follow Basso, who set an unsustainable pace from km 5 to 3. Evans would have been better practicing the patience he'd displayed @ Fleche-Wallone. Sastre, on the other hand, appears to have paced himself well.

Loving The Bike May 26, 2010 at 5:05 am

I'm digging the bigger pictures…..very nice. I love watching these guys faces as they reach the top.

on_the_rivet May 26, 2010 at 5:12 am

once a rider is out of GC contention it pays to be well back on GC as you increase your chances of a stage win. Maybe his tactic??

david May 26, 2010 at 5:12 am

Why was Svein Tuft for not wearing his TT championship jersey? MUST he wear it at all events? Since I can't see the Giro, I'm guessing by the pics that this wasn't a TT. What is the logic in the fine? Thanks for explaining.

norbs May 26, 2010 at 5:21 am

On the GC, 2 swapped with 3, 4 with 5 and 6 with 7. Easy.

BTW Wade, the link to http://www.cyclingedge.com.au/ in your post is borked!

Sean Doyle May 26, 2010 at 5:24 am

It was a time trial and when you are a holder of a time trial title you must wear the jersey. He didn't and got the fine.

cyclingTips May 26, 2010 at 5:32 am

Thanks for pointing out Norbs. Just fixed it.

I'm surprised no one has complained about the irony of the “ad free” page while I blatantly plugged the blog sponsors ;-)

cyclingTips May 26, 2010 at 5:33 am

You'll also notice that Cadel wasn't wearing the rainbow colors since he's not the world champ in the TT.

Mr Bailey May 26, 2010 at 5:58 am

Amazing photos as usual.

Cadel's bar-tape is less that 100% white! That might cost him a few seconds on Wade's looking PRO GC. ;)

Ritchie on the other hand looks impeccable. Is there anything Ritchie can't do?

Chris Murphy May 26, 2010 at 6:12 am

Tuft was fined 2500 Swiss Francs for not wearing his Canadian champion skinsuit.

I guess he just didn't want a skinsuit and didn't have a normal jersey in the Canadian theme?

Cadel won't be wearing rainbow tomorrow either, he is leading the points classification.

cyclingTips May 26, 2010 at 6:16 am

Except one grand violation – he forgot to wear his shoe covers in a TT again.

SLH May 26, 2010 at 6:30 am

certainly wasn't alone in that regard! not sure of the need to be aero at 15km/hr…

Hamish Moffatt May 26, 2010 at 6:34 am

That would help on a road stage (hoping the peloton won't chase you down) but not a TT I'd have thought.

adrian May 26, 2010 at 7:01 am

When Cadel Evans was fighting with a lampre rider only got a 1,000 fine. But Svein got a 2,500 fine!!!. Cadel could of caused a crash. I don't get it why he got such a bigger fine.

LOL Marco pinotti mechanic riding the spare bike because the motorbike broke down.

on_the_rivet May 26, 2010 at 7:04 am

more the fact he was saving himself on the previous days so he could;
A – storm the TT
B – be well back on GC so as not to be a major threat to GC riders when he makes a break on stages 19&20

dearleader May 26, 2010 at 7:09 am

Have the same thought! Could not believe his winning margin on the favourit (Cadel). Vino did the same to Cadel in the Tour and wait… Vino was on the juice.
What was his power to weight ration? above 6.2

Robert Merkel May 26, 2010 at 7:09 am

Hmmm…on the Plan de Corones, the weight saving (remember, clothing doesn't count for the UCI weight limit) might have been more valuable than the aerodynamic gain from the shoe covers :)

SLH May 26, 2010 at 7:36 am

Cadel in skinsuit made by Santini. Gather Hincapie sportswear hasn't got round to that yet.

Daniel S May 26, 2010 at 8:01 am

“Since I can't see the Giro, I'm guessing by the pics that this wasn't a TT”
It was a TT — a hillclimb TT, but a TT all the same.

Chris Murphy May 26, 2010 at 8:08 am

Santini provide the classification leader's jerseys

greg May 26, 2010 at 8:10 am

Cadel wore his Hincapie skinsuit in stage one: http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/93rd-giro-dita.... As leader of the points classification he was wearing the red jersey/skinsuit yesterday which is supplied by Santini

LeighSchilling May 26, 2010 at 8:12 am

Santini make all the leaders jerseys, skinsuits for the teams. Hence Cadel in red Santini skinsuit, Arroyo in Pink Santini Matty Lloyd in Green Santini and Richie Porte in White Santini. I only just found out that they print the kits with the team sponsors each day. I thought they might have had to have a full team size, sponsor for all possibilities. Saw this on a site the last couple of days but can't find it now.

Priestie May 26, 2010 at 8:45 am

They used to screen print them, now i think it may be digitally printed, regardless hence some of the delay in presentation for drying time.

Ashraf Murad May 26, 2010 at 8:56 am

That was very comical, I'm surprised Arroyo didn't have a whip on hand just in case the mechanic needed to clean up his act

Jack D May 26, 2010 at 9:14 am

Cadel didn't throw the first slap. Plus the other guy is a whiny little Italian.

PS. It's “could have” not “could of”. Nuffink.

JC May 26, 2010 at 9:42 am

Bit harsh?

Jack D May 26, 2010 at 10:07 am

That's me. Fair though. I mean when your grammar slips, you might as well start letting the kiddies inject heroin in Prep. Don't even start me with CT “loosing his grasp”?!…

Was kidding, no offence intended.

Personally I think wearing a skinsuit deserves a fine, reminds me of those old freaks in-line skating around Albert Park in them, eeeuuhhh..

Don't suppose you remember the Lion King Mario Cippolini was fined by the TDF organisers for a non-standard kit infringement, so he turned up to the start line the next day in head to toe stars and stripes, bar tape and shoes. Fine this you frog b*stards!! Ahh Cipo.

petert May 26, 2010 at 10:11 am

Maybe, but friends on the climb have told me that most Italian riders got “pushes” from the crowds when the cameras were not around. And he would not have had too many cameras on him early on.

Patrick May 26, 2010 at 10:58 am

great shot of Vino gritting his teeth, I know he's not everyone's favourite cyclist, but at least he's no Landis. That seems an exorbitant fine as well for Svein Tuft also, are they going to fine Cadel because he was cycling on his World Champion road bike?

Mick Carter May 26, 2010 at 11:11 am

This from David Olle (of TopBike tours):
“Italian Support Report: Every Italian rider on course today, without live TV coverage (ie a prominent camera on a motorbike nearby) was pushed by fans. All our group, split up all over the hill witnessed this. The fans still cheered all the other riders, more than politely, but did not push. I did not see the TV coverage for Garzelli (or any other rider), but felt his result today was unusual.”

A_C May 26, 2010 at 11:55 am

As long as it brings us coverage like this, PLUG AWAY!!! Bravo Sirotti, Bravo!

matteo May 26, 2010 at 12:10 pm

That's because he was wearing the red jersey, courtesy of him being the points leader of the race.

Lee G May 26, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Just a quickie on the 'blatant plug', when compared with other blogs, such as Fat Cyclist, Cycling Tips is and clean and without clutter. If a few light plugs keeps it this way then that's fantastic!!

Hope quickie passes the english test.

Mr Bailey May 26, 2010 at 1:42 pm

You mentioned in this post that you are looking at ways to display photos in a larger format. You could check out – http://slidepress.net/

If that doesn't suit then there are plenty of jQuery lightbox scripts that might be useful.

I'm happy to lend some advice if you need.

cyclingTips May 26, 2010 at 2:40 pm

Pinnarellos are ugly…

Ricardo Astorga May 26, 2010 at 2:53 pm

felicidades por tu gran trabajo…las fotos están increíbles.

Davo May 26, 2010 at 4:33 pm

The first photo is amazing- the TV coverage could not convey the incline- I was “listening” to the UK cycling live feed- they were suprised just how slow the last KM was- This gives an idea why!!!

Archie May 27, 2010 at 1:38 am

Wade, I haven't seen any commentary form you on Mike Rogers fantastic win the the Tour of California – did I miss this?

LeighSchilling May 27, 2010 at 1:53 am

This pic from Tim De Waele shows it was a steep climb, even if you tilt your head to make the scaffolding and the sign appear vertical

Jack D May 27, 2010 at 2:12 am

Nah, just the fat execs who ride them…

ppsom May 27, 2010 at 2:59 am

Article on Velonews about the gearing chosen by the pro's.

http://velonews.competitor.com/2010/05/bikes-te...

Dewulf May 27, 2010 at 4:01 am

True, but also go back to the first TT of the race – it was probably the first time we saw Cadel in a regular BMC jersey. So within the discipline (eg. TT) you are obligated to (ie. MUST) wear whatever relevant title holder jersey you have – Svein therefore got fined for not wearing his national TT jersey on this stage.

Meanwhile Cadel, as CT pointed out, could not wear his usual World Champion jersey since that's for road and this is TT. But he now has the points jersey, which definitely gets worn instead a plain BMC.

SamIam May 27, 2010 at 4:10 am

Yeh Wade, chop chop.

Kidding.

Anything else Archie? I mean I've seen CT News Limited and it's a massive conglomerate, seething with journos and production staff. Dunno why he doesn't just delegate ToC to one of his minions..

Archie May 27, 2010 at 5:07 am

sure Wade has a team of fulltime journos working for him so should be branking out more stories ;-)

Archie May 27, 2010 at 5:08 am

make that cranking

Trentmc May 27, 2010 at 3:01 pm

It wasn't the mechanic. It was Neil Stephens!!!! What a DS

Priestie May 28, 2010 at 2:10 am

Watched the highlights on this stage again last night, … blink and you'll miss Cadel sitting down

cyclingTips May 28, 2010 at 11:52 am

Hey Archie,

I'm flattered that I'm starting to be expected to report on everything, however I'm just a one man show doing this gig before work in the morning.

I was promised a bunch of photos and stuff from the ToC, but they were never sent. If I had this I'd be able to talk a lot more about Rogers' fantastic win. I did mention it a couple times in the Giro posts though…

Cheers
