Brussels to Spa – Carnage and Unwritten Rules

Today we saw a rare spectacle in pro cycling.  An unspoken gentleman's agreement between everyone in the peloton to sit up and neutralize the finish.
In today's stage the ASO included the narrow descent of the Stockeu where 60-70 riders went down.   It looked as if there was oil on the road as even the team mechanics running around were slipping and sliding all over as if it were ice.  Bikes and motorcycles were littered all over the road.
Sylvain Chavanel along with 8 others (including Matty Lloyd who was fighting for KOM points) escaped early on in the race.  Chavanel emerged from the group of 8 as the lone rider to cross the finish line nearly 4 minutes ahead of the peloton.  The rest of the peloton were in agreement to wait up for the others who crashed and made no effort to chase down Chavanel in the final kilometers.   No one was willing to profit from the misfortunes of others in this instance.

Many of the riders blame the ASO for including such a dangerous section of road in the early stages of the TdF.   Chris Horner said on cyclingnews:

“They put on a dangerous stage and so when they put it on like that, that’s the result they’ll get,” Horner told Cyclingnews. “They got all their drama on the descent and they lost it all at the finish and they got what they deserved. The only thing more stupid about this stage is the pro cycling federation and Cedric Vasseur for ever letting a stage like this exist in the first place. There’s no place in the Tour de France for a stage like this.”

Thor Hushovd has a very different opinion:

“What happened is not normal,” Hushovd said on the phone. “I’m very sorry for the riders who crashed. It was a big mess. But yet, this is still a bike race. Crashes happen all the time. It’s been a really big mistake from ASO and the UCI commissaires to agree to neutralise the end of the stage. The Tour de France is a big, big race. Things like that shouldn’t happen. Why should Cancellara decide? “I’ve been riding all day for the stage win and the green jersey and I end up with nothing,” “This is not fair. Will the same thing happen tomorrow? Will the times for GC be taken before the pavés sections? If Alberto Contador or another big rider crashes tomorrow on the cobblestones, he’s entitled to ask for the race to be neutralised too! So when will we race, really?”"

What do you think?  The ASO wants to put on a spectacle for the viewers with challenging descents and difficult terrain.  Is it right that they endanger the riders in order to make a more exciting race? I’m afraid I’m with Hushovd on this one. It’s a dangerous sport where risks are taken all the time. It’s part of the game.

Cancellara got them all conned, and good luck to him and his (fragile) leader Andy Schleck, who's coming across as a bit of a sook.
At what point should a stage be neutralised? When one, or two or five riders fall? When the leader of Saxo Bank falls? What if Contador and Armstrong fall?
Schleck got back onto the yellow jersey group about 15kms out. Why not restart racing then? What a crock.

I'm normally a Cancellara fan but what he did today (no doubt influenced by Bjarne) was pretty soft. Obviously it's not just him that would have organised it, but he got what he deserved losing the yellow.

All these guys have known the parcours for ages now…..they knew what to expect. Prepare as much as you can, but if you suffer some bad luck hey, that's the Tour.

Good to see at least one hard man (Chavanel) riding the stage today.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you and Thor Hushovd but what seems different here is that apparently there were motorbikes and mechanics that hit the deck plus so many team cars stopping to switch bikes/wheels on a very narrow slippery road. It takes it out of the realm of normal rider error/bad luck that might be anticipated.

In a regular carnage type crash most of the riders can find their way through the small crash site and reform in short order. Here it seems like the carnage extended for several hundred meters and navigating through all those obstacles would have been very slow going.

Cancellara again acting like a spoilt pratt and a bully…Remember him screaming at Cadel last year because Cadel wouldn't do what he wanted? This was a really crap end to the stage – if he really just wanted those pussy Schlepp bros back on he should have dropped back himself and brought them up with Jens… GET OFF THE POT FABIAN… please don't be honouring this poor showing with “gentlemens agreement”, Cancellara does what suits him. Its not as if virtually every GC contender hasn't raced Liege at some point, mostly pretty successfully! This was not an unexpected stage or conditions. Should everyone ride on neutral through the cobbles tomorrow? Even though they have all been training and planning for them for months? I don't think so….

  • krashdavage

Absolutely with Thor… get some skills! You're supposed to be PRO!

  • chrismurphy101

    The conditions were unexpected.

The road was covered in oil and diesel that clearly isn't part of the usual parcours.

  • http://twitter.com/ScottAHamilton Scott Hamilton

If the road was slick with oil (seems it was) this is really poor. Surely this was known to the race organisation and they should have acted to do something about it. Was there a notice given of it on race radio?

However, lots of incidents are capable of bringing down half the peloton, from a stray dog to a touch of wheels. A race is a race and a protest like that is not fair to the teams of the sprinters or those hoping to get away in the last kilometres. If anything the protest has worked in favour of the ASO.

    Chapeau to Chavenel!

Generally I would lean towards Hushovd's view that it is a race and to be the first to finish you have to finish first. However 60-70 riders go down on an oily road suggests the result is more to do with luck than skills. Remember back when (which year?) almost the whole field would have been eliminated on time but the organisers allowed them to stay in the race? A bit of flexibility is sometimes needed and this stage was a good example.

I'm all for a little bit of luck having an influence but there are limits. Unfortunately this precedent for neutralising the race might make tonight a bit of a snooze.

Cancellara has lost me. What a prima donna – no individual is bigger than the sport but Cancellara obviously believes so. I feel sorry for Hushovd who had dispatched Cavendish and co early (not through crashes). Cancellara made the call because he did not stand to lose from it. I will not be sitting up to watch another stage – last night's non-event was disrespectful to fans, to Chavanel and to purists. It also shows why the Giro will continue to rise in popularity and the Tour will continue to become more and more homogenised with every year. Maybe they should run the race on autobahns – that would be safe.

Cancellara should spend his energies teaching the Schleck's how to descend instead of playing politics – they go downhill like rotorless helicopters: fast but not even they know where they're going to land. Thinking I should have staged a mass protest when they made us go over a pick-a-plank bridges in the Melbourne to Shepparton a few years ago. Oh wait, I actually thought that was part of the race that needed to be thought through…

  • Twoeee69

Cancellara is the biggest sook in world cycling. he cried last year when Cadel tried to break away and now this. Its like someone stole his motor or something. Come on Fabian man up. I am tipping if it was Cadel they would not have waited and he is the World Champion.

It will be so disappointing if the cobbled section is neutralised, it's something the whole world is anticipating!

At the Preston Mountain Classic a couple of weeks ago some groups had to stop for a temporary set of traffic lights because of roadworks. Weird things happen in all sports, it all gives us something more to discuss & remember.

  • jeff

Agree with Thor, hope Contador crashes tomorrow and then calls for neutralised stage because of the dangerous cobbles. Its bike racing, and as was said above, majority of the peleton was back together with 15km to go, so it should have been game on from then!

  • Bradjdavies

Yeah – but they waited for the contenders (except Garmin who was miles off) and so the gentlemen's agreement should have finished there. The decision to neutralise completely is what I disagree with – happy for them to wait for Schlecks etc if they feel compelled (not that Cancellara had a choice in that).

  • FZ

    Under normal circumstances I agree with Hushovd but VeloNews reposted the following;
“It all started when Lampre rider Francesco Gavazzi crashed out of the breakaway on the Stockeu. A TV motorcycle then crashed while avoiding hitting Gavazzi, and the bike spilled oil on the road. The oil had time to run down the hill by the time the peloton came through a few minutes later, setting off a dangerous domino effect that saw over 60 riders sliding across the road.”

In light of this I agree the race should have been neutralised to allow the fallen riders to return to the lead group. It was unusual circumstances that lead to a chain reaction amongst the peloton.

I feel they still could have contested the sprint at the end for the fans instead of protesting how dangerous the stage was. The stage was not dangerous just the oil on the road. Hopefully BP had nothing to do with it….

  • Bianchivista

If the race gets neutralized in tonights stage then I'm thinking of boycotting this tour. Crashes are part and parcel of bike racing. It's clear Cancellara moved to neutralize the race to save the Schleck's – gentleman's agreement my a$$. So dissapointed in Cancellara although I'm sure he was just following Bjarne's orders.

Hmm… I think that Cancellara's actions were unusual and I can appreciate why riders like Thor are feeling pissed off; but I don't wish crashes on anyone and the stage looked particularly hairy. I think it would be doubtful for the pack to try and pull the same stunt twice and presumably we're all better off just moving on and looking forward to another challenging stage.

  • http://twitter.com/ScottAHamilton Scott Hamilton

If this is true the race should have been neutralised just prior to the site of the oil spill to just after it. You hit oil descending around a bend on a wet road you are going down, no question. This isn't about bike skills.

They could have even stopped the break for 30s to “make it fair”.

All of the riders have known about the stages since they were announced last year and – correct me if I'm wrong – if they slowed the pace a little and rode cautiously shouldn't the best bike handlers in the world be able to traverse any kind of terrain?
If the collective intelligence of the peloton is too simple to ride with caution through the sections they already knew were going to be treacherous then they deserve the consequences.
If there was oil/diesel on the road that complicates things, but is merely an unforeseen occurrence.
I personally loved the drama last night and was disappointed to miss out on a sprint that Thor, Robbie and others had set themselves up for.

It was a little tough to make sense last night but I thought that Cancellara had the discussion with the race referees within the last couple of km, it was an agreement between riders to cruise before that. I am not sure that the points neutralisation was the right thing – maybe they should have sprinted but given the same times? Its tough when there were stragglers for 15+ minutes after.

Crashes are part of the race, but crashes due to an oil spill, down hill in the rain are not.

Spoiler alert please – guess i'll know to expect it now though !!

A fascinating day, which has some worrying implications. Clearly today’s events were Saxo Bank using their Yellow jersey to influence the race to their advantage, while they have technically 'given up' the jersey, really they are surrendering it from a rider who was never going to hold in the hope their true GC hopes can compete for it later.

Thor raises a valid point, to put it another way you have to race the course, including the events that unfold over the day. If someone falls in a one day classic the race isn't neutralised, why because the race is decided at that finish line. It is no different in a grand tour, just different peoples races are decided at different finish lines. An aside the Schlecks could still race for the KOM jersey it is just their GC is over.

For me most worrying of all is the point that Thor raises: what if a big name falls tomorrow on the cobbles? Who makes the decision to neutralise then? If it is decided on who the rider is or their perceived chance at victory then it becomes worryingly subjective. You are allowing riders to become greater than the race. Further the greatest triumphs are always bought with the hard currency of pain and adversity. You are possibly robbing the race of its greatest story, and the riders of the true competition.

On a more insidious point if this incident is allowed to become a precedent then you are allowing political and likely commercial influences to begin to overcome the race. The danger is F1 style competition where the big players dictate the rules and dull the competition.

Fabian managed to sneak this one by, the race directors would be unwise to allow it to happen again.

And now, just my two cents

I think this stage really reflects poorly on the ASO. The conditions causing the crash were not normal for the route, there was quite clearly something (oil/diesel) spilt across the tarmac greatly changing the 'normal' conditions for the descent as we saw when not only 60-70 cyclists crashed, but motorcycles and team mechanics were slipping about. While we may argue that all the cyclists had to deal with the same conditions (which to be fair they did), the route chosen by the ASO with these unusual conditions caused undue risk to the riders and greatly changed the profile of the race. Maybe the ASO need to do a reconnaissance of the route on the day of the stage and have back-up routes in case they experience conditions like last nights.

Any decision made last night most likely would have put someone out. To not acknowledge that contenders such as the Schlecks and Armstrong were unfairly disadvantaged by the crash would have been wrong. Similarly to completely neutralise the race was unfair to the sprinters teams like Cervelo who had been working at the front the whole stage to gain positions for the final sprint. Yes Cancellara most likely wouldn't have made such a big fuss over the crash had the Schlecks come out unscathed but as a domestique Isn't it his job to do whatever he can to help his GC contender teammates, even if this may mean using his reputation and standing in the race? Is this not is job? Essentially I feel that really the ASO is at fault not for the decision to neutralise the race but either the decision to keep the route through the oil slick patch of road or the lack of reconnaissance identifying this dangerous area.

Totally with you on this. Chavanel's ride was brilliant. Yes wait for the contenders who are, say, up to 3 mins back but once they're on the race is on.

Do not totally disrespect the fans who are out there standing in the rain, the Aussies watching it on TV at 1am, the Norwegian who dropped his rivals only to lose out on any advantage or the Frenchman who smashed everyone, etc etc.

    It's a part of racing.

Perhaps if the organisers were aware of the potential carnage they could have neutralised the decent only. Then get on with it. No different to stopping for a train at a train crossing. Just my 2 cents.

  • Xponti

    1, b, a.

No funny comments on a day that was not funny at all. I can understand both points of view. Thor says it is a race and that they should “Race”. Others say that due to the oil CAUSED by the motorbike that fell when a rider fell, the race should have been neutalised. Others have suggested that only that section should have been neutralised. It is hard to know what the right decision is and whether team politics have been used to the advantage of Saxobank. Sacrifice the yellow now for a chance to get it later when it really matters.

If the stage from the accident should have been neutralised then surely those riders that came in after the main group should have gotten the same time. The only person without the same time is Chvanel. Grats to him and no wonder he stayed upright ont he decent. There was no oil when he went through that section.

Lets hope that tomorrow they race.

All I was saying when watching was, why doesn't Cadel attack and put time into his rivals. Because he was probably one of the ones to agree to the netralisation.

  • Mark

Ha ha!!! I'll pay that comment…

  • Xponti

Not ALL the riders had to contend with the oil. Chavanel did not have oil on the road for his decent. He is known as a poor decender and surely would have come down as the others did. The oil (as someone else pointed out) was as a result of a Camera Motorbike crashing behind one of the cyclists that crashed CAUSING the oil to be spilt.

  • Yossarian_Lives

I doubt Saxo would have wanted the responsibility of the yellow during stages 4-6, better to give it up now and take charge before the Alps kick in. The big issue that everyone has so far overlooked (but I think was where Thor was really coming from) is what this means to the SBS Fantasy Tipping Comp… this decision has robbed many a manager out there of valuable points! Not since the 'Fine Cotton' affair has such a sporting scandal been perpertrated on the australian public. For shame Cancellara, for shame.

  • SupermanSam

Nice work FZ, I think that absolves the race organisers ASO from responsibility and also maybe also (a little) Cancellara's actions.

I don't trust Bjarne Riis though, and reckon he's been very calculating using Spartacus in this way. There were some great moments with Jens and Stuey out front smashing the bunch in the chase, so it was a pity that it ended in a farce and disparaging to Chavanel's efforts. Still, he'll be pretty happy to wear the yellow into France and for a couple of days.

You can't forecast an oil spill like that, and the fans all want to see exciting racing on great courses. It's part of the L-B-L route, which has been run since 1892 so you can't whine about that. Jens and the Schlecks all reco'd and raced that route this year.

Some of the best parts of this year's Giro were the rain affected stage on La Strada Bianchi, seeing a muddied Cadel crossing the line was awesome. The hill climb ITT on Plan de Coronnes was awesome too, but would have been a debacle had it rained. The recriminations would have been massive, instead we had one of the best Giro's in years.

Hmmm, diffcult to know what to think. Firtly; not sure i agree that ASO totally at fault – how did they know it was going to be raining?! Maybe there was oil… maybe not. Maybe riders were riding beyond safety for conditions.

I always thought the 'unwritten rule' was that everyone sat up till all big GC contenders got back, then the 'race' was back on.

Tomorrow, on the pave, what happens in the Shlecks go down again, does Sparticus/Riis etc. pull the same trick?

I think is was wrong – I also am with Thor. The group should hanve sat up and neutralised till all back together, then raced the last 15km. I think this is all part of the team radios – ASO / teams / riders issue. So, personally “Not happy!” I think a few riders stooged the group for own team's best outcome.

Sorry bu t I am with Thor on this one
THe stage was not unusually dangerous, compare it to to more than half the Giro stages! Saxo seem to have done a great job in conning the Peloton, IMO
The biggest benefactors were them and Quickstep, no one else (maybe Cav) a couple of guys fell OK Saxo shouldn't work, but that shouldn't stop other teams taking their own position, if their captains were gapped the may not have decided to work either. T he fact that they were conned could have made the situation more dangerous at the end.
I bet is AC falls on the Cobbles there will not be the same go slow by Saxo (or the Shack) tomorrow…

    Quote from Velonews http://velonews.competitor.com/2010/07/news/syl…

“Cancellara said waiting for his fallen comrades and neutralizing the finish points was only fair.

“It was the right thing to do to wait, so everybody comes together to the finish line together,” he said.

“When you have everybody on the ground and people five minutes behind because they can’t find their bike then it’s only normal.

“I think fairness comes before being selfish. That was the reason why I spoke with (race official Jean-Francois) Pescheux … There’s other things to think about than the yellow jersey.”

Pescheux said it was “a tacit agreement.”

“Cancellara came to see me to tell me there had been enough injuries in the peloton today.

“(He said) there were (potential) leaders stuck behind and that no one wanted to sprint for second place.”

Sorry, but as I put above – this is not right. To wait for most/all main GC contneders to rejoin – great. To ride the last 15 km and not race – ridiculous and wrong. Indvidual teams /riders with personal agenda dictated terms to everyone.

Sounds like both have good points. Not the first time this year the peleton has refused to race based on safety reasons, happened in the Giro also because parked cars didn't it?

Fair enough you have crashes when things like mechanicals happen or due to rider error etc. – but when half the peleton crashes in what can only be attributed to the actual course design then something probably should be done and it seems the only way the guys feel the message can be heard is through not racing. Although i also agree with thor, this type of thing sets a bad precendence, they need to find another way to get the message to race organisers without stoping racing.

Because this has been inappropriately done by Saxo Next time there will be no chance of guys like Cervelo playing their game, this may have cost Thor the Green in 3 weeks, it is at least 20 points (out of a possible 35) that he would have got on Cav.

Because this has been inappropriately done by Saxo Next time there will be no chance of guys like Cervelo playing their game, this may have cost Thor the Green in 3 weeks, it is at least 20 points (out of a possible 35) that he would have got on Cav.

I have so much respect for great champions who sit up and wait for fallen riders, when they could easily ride on on to vistory or massive time gaps. This is true sportsmanship in my eyes. But on the decsions made during Stage 2 last night, I have to agree with Thor. Fair enough, sit up and wait for the GC contenders to get back to the peleton and maybe even give everyone a 5 minute breather once they're there, but then it should have been on again. Pretty disappointing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nikos.andronikos Nikos Andronikos

    It's just bloody rude.
What about the punters and their fantasy teams?
Thor would have had the sprint in the bag and I would have gotten lots of points.

    a. They are given the same time as those they were riding with (usually the peloton)

  • sillyoldbugger

If it makes sense to neutralise the race from the crash through to the finish, rather than restart when Andy Pandy Schlack rejoined, then shouldn't all riders be given the same time (except Chavanel)? There could even be a case made that no points be awarded to anyone including Chavanel.

  • sillyoldbugger

That's why it's E Grade. Those who race for fun, not prizes, not career, not for the spectators, have the luxury of not needing to HTFU. Those E Graders who do race on, go to D Grade and on.

More the point is that the Commissaires should have acted as soon as the oil was spilt. They didn't. And they made a bad decision not to restart when the bunch had regrouped 15km out.

If only Cadel had attacked sooner….

  • Sam

Many of the riders appear to be blaming the choice of route, but as others have pointed it was the presence of oil on the road rather than narrowness of the roads, steepness of the descents that caused the crashes. Having passed the point of danger, I am not sure why they didn't resume racing. Motor racing has yellow flags and safety cars to deal with this type of situation. Perhaps cycling could use similar rather than neutralising stages.

  • sillyoldbugger

The worst part of the whole seedy affair is that I lost an hour's sleep for no result!

  • AaronG

In my opinion, there seems to be two issues here:

    1. “FZ” had the best comment above regarding the source of the oil spill. If true, it is just an unlucky accident, the oil compounding the already present difficulties of rain and narrow roads. In cycling, there seems to be an unwritten agreement that you wait for the guy that crashes. In my opinion, if it's an unlucky crash (eg a spectator's bag catching Lance's bike and causing him to fall, a labrador, a crazy fan dressed up in a chicken suit) then it seems fair to wait, as Jan did (we think?). However, if the crash is the rider's fault due to his inability to navigate a downhill corner or going too fast (eg Joseba Beloki, or Jan Ullrich going into the grass) then I don't see why the other riders should wait, even though Lance DID wait for Jan. I must stress that this is all unwritten, gentlemen's agreements etc. Whether I agree with them or not, it's the peloton who is running the show and it's their choice to wait or not to wait.

    2. My real issue is with the “protest” that one team seemed to impose on the other teams. What is the protest for? If it's the rain or wind or narrow roads then either SPEED up like Chavenel did to get out of trouble or SLOW down – it's your choice as a PRO rider, surely! You've had 7 months to come up with a strategy. If it's the oil, then didn't the peloton wait and re-group before the end of the race anyway, so what's the problem??!! The big losers are the guys whose bread n butter is to go fast for the last 200m – the sprinters. I can see Thor's frustration.

In summary, I consider oil on the road from a recent motorbike accident to be “unlucky”. Therefore, the riders should wait (which they did) and then restart the race (which they didn't). The fact that they didn't restart the race needs to be examined more closely. If there is no valid reason then THEY ARE SOOKS and Fabian should be wearing the “WA” jersey tonight (wing attack)!

PS didn't Steven Bradbury win a gold medal in ice skating cos the clowns in front of him couldn't keep their feet? Slow and steady wins the race?

  • haitch

Having trouble forming coherent sentences this morning, but:

    * It's silly to criticise the ASO – it was the oil from the camera motorbike that caused it all, not the course. It was a freak thing and because it happened between the break going through and the main pack arriving, even race radios didn't help. What are you going to blame the ASO for exactly, putting out the infrastructure (moto cameras) that let us watch the race?
    * Why are people assuming the same thing will happen tomorrow? Eveyone has known full well that the cobbles are part of the course for six months, Unlike the oil slick.

From a recent Pro Cycling mag blog: http://www.bikeradar.com/blogs/article/contador…

“It’s a universal truth of being a journalist at the Tour de France, that you collect the best material when you least expect it, and usually in the most surprising places.

So it was this afternoon when my conversation with another rider in the ground floor bar of Annecy’s Impérial Palace was interrupted by a fusillade of expletives originating from the mouth of Fabian Cancellara.

It’s fair to say that the rider known as Spartacus wasn’t overly thrilled with his second place behind Alberto Contador. Call it a hunch, but that’s the impression I got from the multilingual tirade to no-one in-particular with which Cancellara announced his arrival.

The object of his dismay? Not so much Contador as the motorbikes which, Cancellara believed, had hoovered the Spaniard to victory.

Several “Vaffancullos!” later, Cancellara had just about calmed down. He then sank a cold beer and threatened to “buy a motorbike to do my next time trial on.”

Add last night's effort to last year's hissy fit with Cadel, and Cancellara's beginning to look like Tarzan but act like Jane…

Ask yourself, what would the angry little Badger Bernard Hinault do…? The great mans once said,”Attack! It's necessary to attack. There are not 36 solutions, just attack!” or as Big Ring Riding so eloquently says of him,”THE BADGER: TAKING PEOPLE TO THE PAIN CAVE SINCE 1977. THIS MAN SPENT HIS ENTIRE FUCKING CAREER IN THE BIG RING, EVEN WHEN HE WASN’T ON THE BIKE.” http://www.bigringriding.com/page/6

I wonder if people will say the same of Cancellara if he acts like this?

  • http://twitter.com/cyclist_dave Dave

I've seen some comments on Twitter that say the protest was largely because the team cars aren't allowed to have TVs which meant the team directors weren't able to know what was happening and advise their riders accordingly.

As for answers (I actually know two of the answers this time):
    1) Liège-Bastogne-Liège
    2) 1
    3) They are given the same time as those they were riding with (usually the peloton)

    1,b,a.

The question that I think shoudl be asked is would Cancellara have slowed down if the bros were with him and armstrong and bertie were on the ground? What would he have done if Evans had been up the road? I don't think so. As someone else said Cancellara has got them conned. Lets see what happens today.

  • Troy van Trienen

Such a shame to take the flame away from Sylvain Chavanel's win. What a great piece of riding and such an emotional victory for his career, although I am not French I do feel happy for him.

Im on the fence with the neutralisation though as I can see validity to both arguments but whats done is done and the race must go on.

  • Di

Pretty sure that a “gentleman's call” to wait for GC contenders after a mishap usually ceases once contact with the leading group is made. All for a go-slow to allow the big boys an opportunity to regroup but to neutralise the stage for all but Le Chav smacks more of Saxo team tactics rather than a general concern for safety.

No issue with Cancellara flexing some muscle as he's more than entitled to do so but the race director should have taken a leaf out of Cadel's book from TDF 09 and politely, but firmly, told him no – RACE ON!

Dark clouds brewing for L'Etape 3 – giddy up!

Do they stop if the GC guys are dropped on mountains? no? riding descents is a skill and if you can't stay at the front/stay upright, you should lose time. If we always wait when there is a crash, then the epic feats of teamwork (McEwen,Tdf 2007 i think – crash <30km out, teammates brought him back just in time, won the stage) will be gone, and bike racing will lose its excitement.

Crashing is part of the race (although perhaps ASO shoud use a little more sense)
    1. , B. , A.

  • Dewulf

Glad someone brought this up, Ullrich got much respect for his true sportsman consideration to Armstrong, as he should have. As Fyxomatosis Hub stated below, Jens said it best.

Also yes, I would have liked to see the race go-slowed til the peleton was back together, followed by a sprint for Thor, Robbie etc., BUT the protest finish may also have something to do with safety overall.

ie. Jurgen stated the barriers narrowed on yesterday's stage, lots of riders said people were super close on the road in stage 1 too, and some forgot to move their oldie's wheelchairs off the road when the riders came through?? I thought the army cadets (or whatever they were), keeping the fans at bay at the top of the Giro climbs this year were one of the best things I'd seen in ages.

That said, yeah, it seems Bjarne might have used Fab to get the Schlecks back, but, hey, that kind of crashing (oil on the road from a motorbike smash) wasn't anyone's fault so I'll be happy to see a closer fight in the mountains on GC.

  • http://www.BrandWorld.com.au/ Priestie

I'm with you on that, is that the Giro Prolight?

Here's one that's been bugging me for a while.

Why are some of the riders in teams like Caisse d'Epargne, RadioShack & Garmin, wearing two different helmets? – Giro Ionos and what looks like the Giro Prolight (or Saris)?

Is it to identify team leaders, domestiques, team ranking, etc? or is it for Giro to promote two different styles of helmets? I can understand personalised helmets, but this has got me beat … and on top of all that it looks 'not-PRO'.

  • Robert Mcglinn

    Agree with you mate.
While there was abit of poor planning in having those motorbikes and cars travel (and crash spilling oil) on the narrow sections which in turn caused more carnage for the riders. I think once A Schleck had caught up – it was fair game and the sprint should have been on. If everyone had told Cancellara to go jump, the organisers might have left it be. But it seems everyone was abit scared to argue with Fabian for whatever reason.

On another topic – Id like to say a BIG THANK YOU very much to Wade, CT and WattBike for the competition prize yesterday. I will wear the kit with pride. And to everyone else, keep the answers coming – theres some great prizes on offer! Good luck all.

    Keep riding :)

If Andy Schleck wins this year, then writers and bitter competitors could use this stage to tarnish that victory. That sucks for him.

Cycle Racing is Dangerous – some say too dangerous… somewhere in the not too distant future…

I can see it now; big stadium (indoors of course, don't want the pesky weather spoiling a good bike race), lots of spectators, all riders on their machines each hooked up to a mag trainer (not rollers – some idiot might fall off!), each mag trainer linked to a central computer with a screen in front of each rider relaying a 'realistic view of the road ahead'. Big fans blowing to create 'realistic wind in face and jersey look'. Computer adjusts the resistance of each riders trainer according to position in the race. Three weeks later, hey presto, the Maillot Jaune for the 2011 virtual TdF!

Daily presentations, green, polka dot and white jersey's no problems, kissy kissy girls, no worries (actually could introduce some pom-pom girls around the outside to keep the spectators interested and 'support' their team).

Holy f@#$ why has no one thought of it before? … I claim copyright – going straight out to set up the Virtual Cycling Racing Association (VCRA)

  • Grumpy

Except Jan & Lance was mano-a-mano. Last night it was a bullies decision to tell the whole bunch how to ride. J & L were the only real contenders then, and had some honour between them. This is not comparable, and the threats to kill tonight's racing as well are simply deplorable…

  • SupermanSam

    You think so Chris?
I reckon the Pro's are a lot more precious sometimes than the weekend warrior who manages to train and race in between work, ferrying the kids to sport all weekend, etc etc then has to actually put their hard earned into race fees…Out at wet cold country races there aren't many soigneurs to throw a towel around you like your Mummy. I'll pit the hardness of a grizzled old D & E grader against the Playstation twiddling Gen Y kid with a Pro contract anyday. Anyone blaming the race directors needs a large cup of HTFU, you sound like Vinokourov pitifully whining in the Giro “there's no place for these stages in a grand tour” when Cadel won the stage with balls of granite.

SBS are reporting that a moto that crashed ahead of the peloton spilt oil/fuel on the road:
    http://www.sbs.com.au/cyclingcentral/news/13272…

So, it was more than just regular road grime and it's not unreasonable to have the bunch regroup. However, going slow at the end is a bit daft.

CN and Chris Horner give the impression that the block ride at the end was due to issues around Race Radio and TV monitors:
    http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/horner-tour-org…

I reckon they're all still confused why the riders sat up and why the ASO/UCI let them but it certainly wasn't a typical TdF day (whatever that is).

Sux to see the mess on the road but it sure spices life up. Tomorrow, there'll be little chance to pull the same kind of move unless they have a 1998 Festina style down tools protest before the start and have the stage canceled. No hiding tomorrow. Good point. Would they have waited for Cadel if he was down: I doubt it. Cancellara conned them.

  • Dewulf

Meh, stop living up to your name, pretty much the whole peleton agreed to at least a slow down, and all I'm saying is there's precedent for waiting to get everyone back together, and I'll add that the ASO should have been on top of it (especially once the motorbike and oil went down), enforcing a go slow as would happen at a Formula One race.

That said, with so many accidents in the last 3 days, I can see why the peleton wanted to avoid more potential carnage at the finish. I would have like to have seen Thor and similar riders get points for being able to handle the hills, but if neutralising the points was the only thing that would avoid further crashes…
