In any case, I think Contador should have waited. Contador denies that he knew what happened to Schleck but I find that hard to believe given that he was behind him at the time. Also, Vino was right there and I would be surprised if he didn't get onto the team radio right away.

Andy has had some luck already in this Tour (Stage Two) and possibly engineered his own mistake if he was changing gears so should shut his trap and just let his legs do the talking on the Tourmalet.

It's really amusing to read and watch comments from different cycling cultures. The Spanish papers and media rescue stories new and old attack in the Tour when accidents or mishaps happen, going back to Mercks-Ocaña times. For some Contador is a villain, for the others Contador did what he had to…

I am by no means a Contador fan as a matter of fact I cannot stand the guy but I do not have a problem with his actions. Did anyone stop for Armstrong on Stage 3 when he flatted. Not even Contadors teams mate, Alexander Vinokourov, stopped in the final strait when Contador had a mechanical with his bike and lost 20 seconds. I did not see the Saxo Bank team stop the race in either of these instances. Mechanicals are a part of bike racing and just like motor sport, if your machine fails then the athlete suffers the consequences. Let's not forget Shane Kelly at the Olympics where he pulled his foot and could not restart. I think we a all blinded by bias on whom we like the best.

Nothing pleased me more than watching Contador lose time in Stage 3. I felt sorry for Andy yesterday but the fact is I do not want to see a bike race stopped every 5 minutes because some one has a mechanical or makes a bike handling error. It makes for a boring race. If the circumstances are extraneous where someone throws a hand bag at a rider with a brick in it or a lion come out of the bushes and eats a back wheel fair enough. After all it is a bike race – man, machine and team .

It's easy to say what should and shouldn't have happened when you're sitting in front of the TV, and it's also easy for Scleck to say he would have waited if the tables had been turned, but if Sanckez and Menchov were racing and he was chasing yellow……
Besides chains don't just fall off of their own accord…

Contador claims he was between a rock and a hard place as he didn't want Menchov and Sanchez to take time out of him but I reckon that their attacks served his interests pretty well. Frankly the leaders need to lead, Contador has to stop and make the others do likewise. Manel's comment above is spot on, there is an attitude of doing what had to be done to win among some riders. You can spot them by the blank expression when questioned over their actions, and that oh so spanish shrug that inimitably expresses “What else could I do?”

Incidentally the “I didn't realise it was happening” mea culpa is offered regularly by riders and if this is truly the case then I don't understand why they need their radios so badly, it doesn't seem like race critical information is being instantly communicated by them!

A pyrrhic Pyrenean victory for Contador if you ask me.

I have 3 answers for the fireworks of last nights stage. Two of them I will answer as if Contador and Shleck were the Badger.

1/ AC as Badger – Thats racing and if Shleck is a true champion then he has to prove himself to be one.

2/ AS as Badger – He/They should have waited and it is un-sportsman like AC, DM, SS, dam it the whole world saw me have a mechanical and then they decide to attack me. They deny they saw me yet I was in front of them by 10m or more. AC was boxed in and about 5th. I was free up the outside and accelerating away. merde, I think I will pull up now just so I don't have to stand on the podium next to 2 other filthy cheats.

Cycling don't you just love it.

3/ If you look at how AS decended and the time he lost on that alone and if his attack was good enough to get him even 10-15 seconds on AC and co. at the top then he would still have finished behind them. AS would either be in or out of Yellow by a very small time gap.

I am not a fan of either AC or AS, but it is making me enjoy the tour more as it goes on.

Oh Andy for the first Q

Schelck looked like he was just about to fly away from the Spanish tool when the mechanical happened. Then when he could plainly see Schleck struggling to get the chain on, and I wont have it that he didn't see it, he rode right past him, that's when he accelerated. He could have maintained the pace he was going to show some sportsman like behaviour, but no, off he went.

And to stand on the podium all smiles was another thing that got my goat. Show some humility you turd. You were gifted the yellow jersey today.

I hope he has a mechanical with a 5 second lead coming up to the line in the TT. That would be karma, and fricking awesome!

Looking at the front-on reply Schleck appears to shift his right shifter so I am surprised he had issues with the front chain ring. Maybe a slight tap on the left shifter for big ring with a simultaneous up shift at the rear. CT you say he shifted off the big ring? Most reports state he got chain suck in the bottom bracket which backs comments about Schleck not using as chain catcher? Anyone with any clarification?
What I am surprised is that at that professional level why he didn't rescue the issue on the move as per common MTB practices…?

Going by the angle of his Sram lever when he attempts to recover it, maybe that is a downshift not an up shift?

If you had a look at AC's face when it happened, AS had dropped him. Vino was the only one to go with him. AS had his mechanical and AC stomped on the pedals like a scared rabbit trying to put some distance between him and AS. AC was in trouble imo. He was leading Menchov and Sanchez. He didn't just let them do the work and shadow them, he drove them up the climb, like a fox running from the dogs behind. To say that he didn't know what happened, when he would have seen when he went by is a bit of a lie me thinks.

Oh and Andy, C (Although I like A), A, and False (Although who wouldn't want to wear the higher ranked jersey if they were given the choice.)

Would they have neutralized the field if only one cyclist had crashed in stage 2?
Does a football team not go for goal if a defenders boot comes off?
Would Schleck have stopped for Contador? he didn't slow down when Cadel crashed.
Does a runner slow down if their opponent trips up?

Schleck has had two freebies in this tour already. The neutralised stage to Spa and then Fabio driving while Contador got stuck behind a crash and then contended with a damaged wheel on the cobbles. Even with these gifts he was only ahead by thirty-odd seconds.

Add in Schleck's notoriously poor descending and time-trialling and, well… “Dead man walking” is the phrase that comes to mind.

While the ethics of the situation are certainly up for debate it is naiive in the extreme to think that this episode will cost Schleck the Tour.

As far as I know, dropping your chain is your own problem… not comparable to a crash or an unexpected circumstance. I felt a little apprehensive as Contador charged on – perhaps in the spirit of the close race he was having with Schleck he might have paused a bit – but he sure couldn't let Menchov just ride off. Difficult moment. Probably never be resolved. Loved Schlecks chase up the hill – can't wait to see if he manages to hurt Contador tonight… all in all I don't hold Contadors ride against him, although I didn't fully support it either. Am a little surprised at some of the abusive language being thrown at Contador such as “cheat”. Can't see how it in any way constitutes cheating or foul play. Pity it happened – wanted to watch them smash each other properly! Plus, if we consider the cobbled stage, it can't be argued that riders should wait for mechanicals – Schleck was the big winner on stage 3 when Armstrong, Contador et al all had their problems and he managed a clean ride. No-one suggested he should have waited for Lance to rejoin that day…

I can understand Contador attacking Andy, especially when the other riders were going hard too. I don't think they should have done it, But Contador should have at least been a man about it and admitted he knew what had happened.
The good news is that Andy is looking strong; the attack he launched when he dropped his chain was well timed and gapped Contador, and he made up time on the rest of the climb (if not the descent)… So the next couple of stages should give us some fireworks, with a strong and angry Shleck attacking on some heavy mountains. Hello sleepless nights!!

As you elude to Wade, Was it Contador or his DS than made the final call, I doubt many in the peleton would have given up the fight to free wheel while a chain is repositioned. Look forward to the Saxo reply in tonight's edition

Nah guys… I think you've got it all wrong. Alberto doesn't give a toss about Andy… he saw Vino make a move and thought “I'm not going to let that bastard make time on me”… :p

It's the first stage I've stayed up for (well went to bed early and then got up at 12.30am AEST – poorly timed migraines have prevented the others)… and what a cracker!

I am amazed at the blinding pace they were setting up the climb.

Schleck did look the goods, but I'm tipping either Louis Leon Sanchez or Samuel Sanchez to take the stage tonight, and then back to either Contador or Schleck to take the following stage.

I am not an AC fan but what happened to AS was AS's mistake! bikes dont drop chains people drop chains ( his bike seemed to be working fine until then and to no surprise it worked fine after as well ).
But the lip service of AC after the race was poor full stop, dont say you didnt know just tell it like it is you liar.
I wish he had of had the balls to say ” I saw Andy f*#k up a gear shift so we smashed it up the climb”.
All said and done though we cant change what has happend but I am siding with so many people on the fact that I would have loved to see a 1 on 1 battle with these riders over the comming days.

That photo of Fignon and the Badger is more poignant than some realise, Fignon is battling cancer (and seems to be using the chance to have a fair wack at various riders present and past..).

Great stage, either way you look at it.

I reckon Alberto was attacking Schleck and the footage showed he was unaware and not looking back for a good minute or so. In his mind, Schleck had popped and El Pistero was just surging. By the time he knew what had happened Schleck had recovered and was riding angry. Man he was great, just nailing every one of those guys who had just ridden past him.

I don't think you can compare it to Armstrong and Ullrich, or Merkcx and Ocana, those were flat stages and obvious crashes. I also reckon it was wrong to jeer him as they did when he got his jersey. No maiilot jeune should cop that (except maybe Vino). Cadel must be smiling at the irony, he's never had any favours from other riders when it comes to his mishaps.

Schleck now has licence not to stop or help AC though, as Paul Sherwin noted. No favours now. Everyone has written Schleck off for the ITT, but stranger things have happened. It's 52km's but flat, so Andy needs to just limit his losses. Prior to that, the Tourmalet stage finishes before the descent so he needs to have gained time on AC before then on either the Col du Soulour or its descent.

Really, tonight's stage is Schleck's chance to put time back into AC. If he can do so on the climb then descent from Tourmalet, and again on the Col du Aubisque, and he decides to use not burn up his team as they did last night, he's a real chance.

In my eyes, the sneaky one who gets my goat is Menchov. He's been sitting in the whole time, not attacking (even when he did a small attack the other day it was only because Schleck and AC were virtually doing track stands while marking each other, and Menchov had no other option). Silent Killer my arse, Menchov is a wheel sucker and could snag a top 3 placing without really earning it in my view.

My underdog is Sammy Sanchez, he's been really having a crack. Go Sammy!

Personnally I think a dropped chain is a screw up, either Andy's or his mechanics', and you shouldn't have to reward screw ups by soft pedalling. Andy has already received a major gift in stage 2 thanks to Cancellara conning the rest of the field into slowing down, so he and Frank didn't lose major time. If anything this is a little bit of justice. Not that it really matters, Contador will smoke him in the TT.

All that said, I agree with SupermanSam, c'mon Sammy!

Contador had to take advantage as he was on the ropes! I honestly think AS would not have stopped for AC if the boot was on the other foot.

Perhaps disappointing to see C*ntador attack in those circumstances but Schlek has now learnt a valuable lesson – no man has a birth right to win the tour. Andy is clearly the strongest in the mountains this year and it is unfortunate he dropped his chain when attacking today. However, he could and should have had more time up his sleeve. Instead of playing cat and mouse with Albert on stage 14 Andy should have savaged him.

I'm not a Contador fan, but he did what he needed to do in a bike race the circumstance he was in did not warrant waiting for Schleck just as no one waited for Evans to get his wheel changed in the Vuelta last year, or those caught behind the other Schleck's crash in stage 3. Looking at how Andy descends any gap he could have made on Contador, Menchov, Sanchez and Vino would have been mitigated by the finish anyway.

My only dissapointment is that Contador didn't just say that he did what he did and knew what he was doing. In my eyes there was nothing wrong with it and it is not comparable to other moments in the sport where riders have waited. After the look on Andy's face when he claimed yellow and some of his disrespectful comments to his fellow competitors I'm just hoping now that Menchov smashes him in the TT and relegates Andy to the lower places.

I agree with the french crowds reactions to alberto in yellow. Those 'BOOOOOO's' were reminiscent of a collingwood football game.

In this day and age of manufacturing mega dollars being poured into the sport I find it as hard to feel bad for Andy as seeing someone say crash in a TT on a bike more made for speed then handling. If you're going to ride on equipment that saves you fractions of a second in weight and reduced drag and feel happy beating an opponent on lesser equipment, Then you have to deal with loosing time dropping a chain when somewhere along the line someone chose to set up the bike that way.
If the equivalent happened in a motor sport race do you think anyone would wait till they got it back into gear. Its a bike race and bike handling is just as much a part of it as power and endurance.
Did Andy wait on stage 3 when Contador's brake was dragging his wheel? Well no, not even Vino waited (Not that we should be judging everyone by his moral compass).

For the questions.

The problem I have isn't so much that AC went into the lead, but moreso that he ruthlessly attacked. He didn't give Andy any opportunity to work his way back, and that was unfair in my eyes. It could come back to bite him.

As for comparisons to St3, it was expected that riders would have mechanicals on such a stage, not this one.

But the real loser in this is probably SRAM. AC and AS both ride SRAM, so even if AC wins, any ads that come out for 2010/2011 promoting SRAM on the winner's bike will be a little bit comical, much like all the Specialized ads promoting Cancellara's classics wins that hit the stands as the mech doping saga was breaking. Not saying either are bad products (but BMC is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Specialized, plug plug plug), but it does blunt the advertisement.

In the context of these unwritten rules, can anyone explain what happened in the Vuelta last year (or possibly the Giro?) when Cadel lost about 90 seconds waiting for neutral service after a mechanical incident. No-one waited for him then – and the time that he lost in that one incident was almost the exact amount of time that he ended up losing the race by.

In my view our friend AC saw what happened but didn't want to let Sammy & Denis get away – AC kept looking back to see where the yellow was on the climb, & kept pushing it!!
Also, no way would AC have gained all that time coming down the descent last night if he wasn't following Sammy – that's where half of that time was gained – if it was just AC v AS on a descent TT (now there's an idea for Christian Prudhomme!!) I would put my money on AS – seems like very few mountain goats can descend (Sammy ain't no goat)!!

Last rant – if AS didn't let all his team self-destruct on the front he may have had a team mate to give him his bike when he had the mechanical – AC had Vino and one other there (possibility of Vino giving his bike to AC if there is a problem – yeah right, as if!!)

Tonight could be interesting, but realistically Thu & Sat will determine the TdF this year.

I am not a fanboy for either of these guys, I admire them both but they both have bits that give me the shits so in my opinion I would rather see them both blow up and see some one else win (I did tip them AC 1, AS 2 with Gesink 3, though, so I need them to hang on so I don't look too foolish!)

As to AC and AS… well, Schleck opened the attacks Contador responded then kept it on, he probably expected Schleck to catch but be spent. (At which time he could attack again) BUT Schleck took a long time to get sorted, too long to really wait IMHO, and Contador seemed to be steady, after all Mencov and Sanchez caught him. Once over the top, it was all Menchov and Sanchez doing the driving…

Ode to the Super Domestique

Let's not forget the phenomenal work 'super domestiques' Stuey and Jens did at the front in the lead up to the climb. Both Stuey and Jens smashed it for Andy km after km, I was surprised how Astana just continued to sat in – Sorenson blistered again pumping out a nasty 6W/Kg 20min avg., Stuey's, Jens and Chris's faces showed what suffering was all about.

I think riders and fans pull out the unwritten rules excuses and reasons too often.

Schleck made an error and some riders have benefited from it. Same way that Andy benefited from his brother crashing in front of and holding up Contador in Stage 3.

What Andy needed was for Fabian to rush to the front and neutralise the peloton, where was he? ;)

On the last mountain climb of the day all bets are off. Did Valverde sit up for Evans at the Vuelta last year? No, racing is racing.

I hope Schleck smashes him tonight (as he was about to do last night). A champion would wait for two reasons 1) cos it's the right thing to do and 2) cos, if he is a true champion, then he has the confidence that he can beat his rival on a level playing field. I believe that Contador is spooked by Schleck's ability to match him in the mountains this year. I believe that Contador may not have the confidence to attack him with success this year and he saw an opportunity to get the seconds by stealth.

Equipment failure is what it is – bad luck…..until everyone rides the same bike prepared by the same guy over the exact same piece of road….what's the point of teams, sponsorship and racing if we manufacture results????

Seeing Wiggins in the photos above I thought it was another story on the Tour d'Etape, he's going to be fined by the ASO soon for being a spectator on the course.

Voeckler is so completely not PRO, kissing your jersey is football, not cycling, so pull it back down fella. Still the victory salute was a goodie, almost arrogant. Poor guy's great ride was overshadowed by the goings on behind him.

Being the 2nd week of late nights, I've trained myself to half-sleep and wake when Phil Liggett squeals like a choir boy when excitement fills the screen. So I watched as the opportunistic Cuntador attacked spaghetti-man Schleck as his SRAM failed him – not once, but twice…. Cuntador had full view of what happened and left Schleck for dead while he attacked with Menchov and Sanchez in tow – there was a definite point where Cuntador could've pulled up and spoke with the other lads, but he chose NOT to take the high moral leadership road – instead he lowered himself to a Xavier boy, nicking what he could, when he could.

More interestingly though, Menchov looked to be talking with Cuntador about how many energy bars he ate, without throwing up!!

yep. No problem with what Contador did. Schlecks bad luck unfortunately. I definitely wouldn't have wanted Menchov and Sanchez getting away. And as Phil Liggett said during the descent “He's pushed on & you can't blame him for that, its not his fault if Schleck drops his chain” good enough for voice of cycling-good enough for me i say!

Stage 3 excepted?

it's a bike RACE – these guys are the best in the world, racing for the highest stakes, and you take advantage of any chance you can get. you don't have to LIKE contador for it – i think he's a wanker – but he is within his rights to attack.

Agree five-55, no one cared about evans when a similar thing happened to him. The time he lost on that stage was made back up by him in the stages leading to the finish. The icing on the cake was the extra 10 seconds the officials docked him when the new bike he took after the flat already had a bottle on it, and the rules stated that you cannot receive a bottle from the team car within the last 10 (I think) kays before the finish.

If AC wins, and its hard to see him not now, this attack will be how he will be remembered. That was a career staining incident.
Despite his protests he chose to continue attacking the yellow jersey during a mechanical and it's just not good enough to try and blame the guys that can barely hold his wheel battling for 3rd place over 2 minutes down.

Conversely watching Andy smash it once he was re-chained will be how his tour will be remembered. That was an unforgetable spine-tingling moment in a moment-packed Tour.

Let's not lose sight of the bigger picture here people: how awesome are the podium girls for the White Jersey. If its any consolation, Bertie can never take those precious moments away from young Andy.

That's what happens when there's so much money and pressure involved. In my books, Pistolero did the right thing. If Schleck is that strong he should have been able to bridge back. He's sort of promising fireworks everyday and I haven't seen a spark to say the least.

A few comments have aluded to the fact that andy and alberto have been shadowing each other pretty much since the start of the tour, and that one team have sat in the peloton whilst the other team put in the hard work at the front. Even the commentators have drawn conclusions to the 'game of poker' going on between the two, marking each other to limit time loss, etc, etc, etc.

Whilst I reserve my opinion on alberto's actions when andy had his mechanical, this crucial point in the race will finally mean some proper bike racing between andy and alberto, and between their respective teams. Ironically, whilst they have both been so fixated on each other, fate has stepped in and forced both their hands. No longer can andy just sit and wait, he and the team need to go out and make things happen so that he can make back time on alberto. Alberto and astana can (should?) now attack knowing that andy and saxo are going to be on the offensive to make back time.

Perfect timing with the col du tourmalet in tonights stage, bring it on!

About Andy's Mechanical – A lot of other riders have seen their chances in the tour blown away by mechanicals, take Chavanel when he lost the Yellow jersey to Cancellara after 3 bike changes on stage 3, or Cadel when the mechanics couldn't find the right wheel for him in another race earlie this year.
Andy made a mistake by changing gears at the wrong time, or maybe it was really bad luck, but in any case that sort of incidents are part of racing. It will only make the battle more interesting for us in the next stage !

Why hasn't Schleck ridden like that once in the Tour? Why didn't he do that the day before when Contador attacked? Instead of the silly playing around he should be riding like he did last night to get back in contention.
That was truly inspiring.

All your examples are of riders that were not in yellow, Andy Schleck was in Yellow. Seen and experienced circumstances of teams doing something similar at tours ive been racing at, attacking when a yellow jersey has had a mechanical and did not go down at all well and hence this one team wasnt invited back to the tour the following year. This has happened at 2 tours ive participated in and one of those beings the heard sun tour in 2007.

first of all i think this is just another example of how bad the character of many of the southern european sportsmen is – cheating is just considered a proper way of winning. this goes for pretty much every sport i can think of, whether its soccer or cycling or whatever. there are numerous examples.
if this would have happened to AC, he would whine about how unfair this was but him being in the better position not having the problem he didnt even think about stopping for a second – he just takes advantage of this. somebody said it before … he will be remembered for this questionable move and certainly not for greatness. greatness other riders have shown in the past. contador is a douche! period!

that's no way to win the yellow t-shirt. it WAS the sharp end of the race, and all the other guys at the big kids table were stomping away too. i'm more reminded of when DZ biffed it after hitting a tarmac gopher in the final meters of the TTT (what year? too lazy to google) and the yellow wristed one tried to get away with not wearing the maillot jaune the next day, only to have the ASO say, uummm, yeah so, you want a Small or Medium, then?

I think these disgusting actions belong to a man who is feeling threatened. Why else would he feign the ignorance of not being able to recognise what a mechanical looks like? He knows Schleck was knocking him off his pedestal, Schleck had just caught him out and was going to put time into him, and Alberto attacked out of insecurity. I think the circumstances are very different from stage 3 where a crash was expected and etiquette is temporarily ignored. Take Lance, who waited for Ullrich as it was as a mountain stage, but drilled it in 04 when Mayo crashed on the same cobbles as stage 3. If Contador wants to put time into Andy, he should do it fairly by attacking while he's upright, although I think Andy is proving to be the strongest climber, which will make for a VERY exciting stage 16 and 17.

Dear Lord, that didn't take them long did it?

Crikey, calm down people. It was the critical end of the climb, Schleck drops his own chain with poor technique, having been too foolish to bother with a chaincatcher, at a point when Contador was already counterattacking AS's move, then somehow manages to take 25 seconds to get his chain back on, while AC actually just keeps time behind Menchov for at least the next minute, and this is still all AC's fault?
Schleck's had his gifts already this tour, in stage 2 he took an age to start riding again as well, and was very lucky to have everyone else wait and wait and wait til he got back, and then no such 'fairness' from him the next day when his brother's crash halts AC and others progress.
Also, the unwritten rule is not just waiting for the yellow jersey, it's all contenders for the jersey.

Hasn't anyone told these riders that the race is televised? Wait, don't wait. Hook, don't hook. Whatever. Just don't forget when making up your story that there is video footage that is going to be viewed again and again.

Too many times this tour there has been a marked difference between a rider's claims about how they acted and the images we have seen from every possible angle. It's mildly insulting really.

I really don't think Contador would take advantage considering each and every time they reach a stalemate on climbs they then work together to get to the finish; they obviously respect each other.
Although I am no where near the level these guys are at, on a club race on the weekend, one of my team mates flatted 40km in. The race was starting heating up and by simply letting a couple of the bigs guys whats going on, we were able to control to get our team mate back on. However, there were a couple of guys that weren't content with this and actually attacked while this was happening. Fruitless attacks nonetheless, but my point is that there is always going to be someone that wants to take advantage of someones misfortune. In this case, maybe it was Sanchez or Menchov. These guys have to deal with crowd noise, DS shouting in their ear, the enormous pressure of moving up the GC rankings, stress of the climb itself etc. so what you make of it on the TV (and how the commentators/journos portray it) mayyyy be slightly different to how these guys (who are pros remember) actually meant for it to be. Wordy yes, but a situation like this is sort of hard to explain!

I disagree…with over two minutes between Sanches and Contador he could have waited and him and Schleck could have reeled them back in. The real reason he went when the chain slipped was becuase he knew he couldn't drop Andy and that was the only way he would get the time back.

Personally I think Contador is a bit of a baby and it was dick move but racing is what it is and these things happen.

Funny…I had a similar thing happen to me (multiple times) on my Red equipped bike.
I was told by the National Manager for SRAM (via my LBS) that it was bad technique or a crappy flexible frame.
It was a Colnago Extreme Power…and I was in A grade.

Whilst riding in the big ring and really putting some power down I could pop the chain off the outside of the 53 with my pedals at ~2 and 8 o'clock. I demo'd it to the shop from a track stand.

If you look close I think the same thing happened to Andy….but if you ask SRAM, it doesn't happen…

As a southern european, let me say this: Whatever. Bla, bla, bla, bla… I hope you wear a helmet riding that high horse you ride, pal.

“pyrrhic Pyrenean victory”….

Interesting, his apology actually seems to be more of a defence/counter-attack in some ways:
- “When Frank and Andy were unhitched…I didn't hesitate to stop the peloton”
(this is regarding the Spa stage, but at the time it was reported he said he had stopped his TEAM…NOT the peloton, which as far as we know was Spartacus' role, n'est-ce pas?!).

- “I received much criticism for that after the cobbles when after the fall the pack was cut and Andy took advantage of me”…..and this is…what? A riposte, pistolero style?

As others have mentioned, neither of these incidents occurred in that “mano-a-mano, one of us is in yellow and we're duking it out side-by-side on a mountain”-type situation. Also, Contador's broken spokes only occurred very late in the stage (or at least only became apparent very late in the stage), so how could Andy have known? I'd have to go back and watch it again, but i think we only saw Contador dropped AFTER AS and his group had come in.

So, yeah I think AC took advantage, but in a minor way, given that dropping a chain can be rider error. His explanation and apology are a bit lacking, but there you go, that's racing (these days?) and i think the fear of losing was just a bit much for him.

Hmmm, its unwritten so its not a rule. It is a bike race and seriously the prima-donnas need to race instead of turning it into the Tour De Farce!

Contador did the race a favour, maybe we will see some racing and Andy won't wait for Alberto up a climb this time.

If the road of the Champs-Elysees is deemed wet prior to the riders turing onto it, then the riders may be given the time at the first time across the finish. if the road becomes too wet as the riders are on it, then riders get the time given at the next crossing of the finishline. However, if either of these two events occur the riders must complete all laps of the circuit to finish the stage and be ranked in the final general classification

Is was a bold move by Alberto, however he was focussed on the race at hand, he had to cover the other riders, one of which can tt very well. Yes it goes agaisnt the unwritten law of cycling however the key term is “unwritten” there are no rules which govern that one cannot attack in such an event. Alberto might be climbing up the wrong moral tree, however he has done nothing offically wrong.

I cant understand why Andy is so angry as he got his White Jersey. Have you seen the size of the bust on the podium girl to the right…. there worth loosing the yellow jersey!!!!

Part of the beauty of cycling is the fact that it is even considered whether or not Contador should have waited.

to paraphrase someone else from somewhere else: Contador, in taking a truly great chance for victory, has lost all chance of a truly great victory. no-one wanted to see the battle for yellow come down to a mechanical. it's true conty needed to chase Menchov and Sanchez but waiting maybe 20 – 30 sec, which is what i think the gap was after Andy dropped his chain, would not have given them that much, It would've given a much worthier yellow jersey wearer and put Contador down as a truly great cyclist.

After the race contador said he didn't know Andy had a mechanical. Frankly, that's complete Bull$#!+, I'm nearly certain that if you didn't see Andy come to a near stop 10m in front of you, your support cars would have seen the footage on the TV and heard the race radio announcement, and then told you. You've lost my support Contador.

Would be interested to see what people think as to whether the chain drop was Andy's error?

Contador's a douche, always will be!

Chavanel was in Yellow in stage 3, he had 2 mechanicals (flats) , Cancellara and Andy pushed hard in front to take the jersey back ând to put time on Contador.

On what moral ground is Andy standing on? I can find none other than that of a hypocrite.

Stage 3 – Brother Franck falls on the cobbles. The yellow jersey, all major conteders except Cadel get held up behind by a crash. Fabulous Fabio and Andy go “we heard the clash of bikes and knew there was a fall. We didn't look back we just rode as fast as we could”(not the perfect quote but damn close). Game over part 1 as far as fair play/unwritten rules are concerned. Andy/Fabululous have race radios they don't slow later when the yellow jersey flats three times, whilst unfair gaps are being opened on the remaining Tour contenders. Game over part 2. This behaviour is particularly reprehensible when one considers Stage 2. Fabulous neutralises the race because the road is dangerous. This is the same man who says there is no place for cobbles in the Tour, its too dangerous but what no neutralisation. Instead an attack. Andy lives in this world too and apparently knows his mind but he is all attack in this situation. Game over part 3. Cadel has a crash that is not his fault. We see the coverage of the yellow jersey chasing to get back onto the peleton. What! Andy doesn't slow down or tell the others to. Remember they have race radios they know the yellow jersey is chasing but no slow down. Game over part 4.

So Andy drops his chain maybe he doesn't but then I've yet to hear him blame SRAM or his mechanics so maybe he does drop his chain. What an amateur – He is a pro isn't he?. Did he have a mechanical and was attacked. No. He attacked, others responded, and he performed a gross act of rider error. No unwritten rules broken there methinks but I'm happy to defer on that one. Personally, Andy needs to suck it up. Did Alberto do any PR favours for himself? Certainly not. Does it help that he's a Spaniard in France? Certainly not.

“I wouldn't have raced like that”……..but given Andy HAS raced like that in this Tour from what moral ground is Andy squealing from?

I think the biggest part of it is Contador did not initiate the attack, the hammer was already down (initiated by schleck) and it is hard to stop a hammer when it is falling… (I do not like contador, and he should not have fed anyone the bullshit that he did not know shleck had a mechanical, but racing is racing and you have to take your opportunities)
