Okay, I promise this is my last post about the Tour de France for another 330 days. I just had to share this sensational photo gallery from Australian photographer Mike Hone. Mike is originally from Sydney but is working in the United States as a designer for Adobe. He’s heavily involved in the cycling scene in the US and is a former teammate of Tyler Farrar. He was lucky to get his first press pass to the Tour de France this year and did a similar trip to what I experienced. Riding, enjoying the Tour, and snapping a bunch of photos. However, Mike is a REAL photographer, not a happy snap photog like myself.
Here is a collection of his work from the 2010 TdF in no particular order. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
Have a fabulous weekend and ride hard!

Cameron Diaz is a good looking chick.
Very much so… And looking straight at the camera!
Nice,
thanks for that post WW (and Mike Hone). Fascinating to note Dav Z's aero position – reminiscent of Cancellara at Paris Roubaix!
Nice stuff!
Wade while Mike's pics are good – I'd rate you well above a “happy snap photog” – one of the things i really like about your blog is that it's more than a bunch of words (informative and entertaining as they are) with images that are so nice to look at. Out of curiosity what camera/s do you use?
Thanks Sam. Just like cycling, photography is something that can completely consume a man. There's so much to know and I'm just starting to realize how much I have to learn.
As my pocket cam I use a Lumix GF-1 (micro four-thirds) with a 20mm f1.7 lens. It's excellent to bring riding but is a bit large. That's the compromise that had to be made though.
My DSLR is a Canon 7D. The lens I'll usually take to races is my 24-70mm USM. I enjoy taking the “what's going on” types of pics rather than the pics of the race. I'd like to get a 70-200m 2.8 lens as well as a 35mm f1.4. I also need to know how to use a flash properly! Can anyone offer any tips?
Thanks for the excellent photo journal of le tour by Mike Hone, a similar feel to Mr Watson images….
Wade, I read CT as an (almost) daily ritual (like riding the bike) and always enjoy the variety of material covered. Presented well, a pleasure to read. Chapeau
x2!
Good one. Glad to see Albert's finally had his teeth fixed up
G'day Wade!
I am seriously loving your site, and always thought you combine 2 of my favorite things…. photography and cycling!
take a look at these for really good tips for strobes (flash)

I shoot with a 1D III and a 5D II plus a mix of lens 300 2.8 / 85 1.8 / 17-40 4 / 70-200 2.8
on camera I use a 580ex II with a gary fong cover
off camera I use 2 remote nikon sb-24
I would love to buy a white “shut up legs”……
awesome site again!!! and your shots are more than snaps!!!!!!
Great photo's. I take it they are as they are shot with no post processing. The colours don't look as saturated as other photo's you see on the web.
Is it just me when everytime I see a close up of LAs face I want to punch and spit at the screen. That first close up of him is an outstanding photo though. You can read so much into his expression and the clarity of the shot is awesome.
These really are great pics and its great to see a different view through the lens from other photographers we inadvertently get used to, nice subtle use of colour.
Any chance of getting a few of these in a larger format for the desktop? (In no particular order- Breschel, Champs-Elysee (open road shot), el diablo, road, Tourmalet images, Jens? legs, Dave Z TT)
Funny….I just had my head buried in Strobist! I'm out to buy a good external flash tomorrow. It's my next photography assignment
I am glad you like my photos. I am trying to post them on Smugbug for downloads. I have been very busy since I got back from the Tour. What do you mean by “easily make Rouleur”? I am also going to design a book of my experience from the tour. Hopefully start working on it asap.
I did desaturated the photos. I tend to like that right now and also gave it a little vignetting as well.
Hey Mike, apologies, the Rapha magazine Rouleur, I look forward to seeing more from you.
You definitely need to use a flash in during the middle of the days. It is best with a wider angle lens, but shooting with the 300mm lens is just too far for the flash to hit the subject. I am still experimenting with the flash.
I shot with the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, 16-35mm 2.8L, 70-200mm 2.8L, 300mm 2.8L. I also have in my quiver the following…. 85mm 1.2L, 100mm Macro, 400mm 2.8L, 135mm 2.0L, 24mm 1.4L and 35-70mm.
I emailed Rouleur mag. Maybe I can get some images in there. Thanks for the heads up.
Hi Wade,
I can recommend the Canon 70-200mm IS L 2.8 it's an awesome lens! It's sharp for a zoom, versatile, you also get lovely bokeh.
The extra $$ for IS is worth it IMHO as you can hold the camera at lower shutter speeds, i.e shoot in lower light.
I have 35mm L 1.4 too, but it's only been used a hand full of times in last 5 years. I recommend a wider lens maybe 20mm, 24mm or 28mm.
Here are some great photography websites http://www.photo.net/ http://www.luminous-landscape.com/ and a brilliant book on lighting called Light Science and Magic. It helps you understand the why.
Cheers,
Terence

580ex II for the win!!…. then you will want to go off camera (even on a cord and frame is good!!!)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/498744-RE...
chinese ones for $10!!!!
http://www.dchome.net/viewthread.php?tid=380353 with bracket!
if you like blokes.
The Canon 580 EX II is a good flash and using ETTL II (automatic) exposure you can easily sync it at high shutter speeds (over 1/200 shutter speed) to produce good fill flash results in daylight on fast moving subjects like cycling.
I thought the saxo-Bank legs shot was Jens?? or is that the shot of Breschel ??
Loving the podium photo Of Andy texting Frank saying “We'll get him next year!”
Leg shot is of Jens – the long legs and head tube give that away (as does the injuries).
Matti Breschel in the red Danish jersey.
Apologies Sorensen in the Danish jersey
That is actually one of my favorites. He looked dejected and just felt that he knew it was so close, what could have he done better. Sometimes he didn't even celebrate on the podium while Contador enjoyed it all.
magnifico trabajo , felicitaciones por todo lo que nos distes en Fotos del Tour de Francia 2010…
I would also agree many of the others here in saying that you're certainly no slouch when it comes to photography. How do you carry your GF1 when you're biking? I have one as well but have yet to find a satisfactory way to carry it around without me looking ridiculous or the camera getting too damp from the sweat?
Nah, call me old school but texting on the podium is disrespectful and so Gen Y, both to the fans, support team and others on the podium. No doubt some hugely insightful Tweet like “phew, tired, just rode a really tough stage” or some other inane cr@p that passes itself off as social media right now. I'm on a rant here, but it's showing the maturity and concentration span of a 5 year old. Be a man for f#cks sake, next you'll be hiding behind your Daddy's legs. Reminds me of the antics of the cashed up bogan sourpuss Lleyton everytime he loses.
I hope Andy was just looking down.
re Cameron Diaz, you guys need to get out of J division. She/he ain't good.
PS. Great photo's Mike. There's even better ones on your website, especially the Tournmalet stage with Stuey smiling while everyone else makes constipation faces. Are you getting down here to the Worlds and TDU?
those pictures gives me goosebumps….a good one
He was not texting. He was looking down.
No TDU for me this year. I need to actually get some work done.
