Giro d’Italia Stage 21, è Finita!

Giro d'Italia 2011 - Arrivo ventunesima tappa "Rho - Milano"
It's often said that the Giro is the world's most spectacular race, and the Tour is the most important. I didn't stay awake every single night until 1am to watch the Giro like I would with the Tour, but I still get excited to wake up every morning rushing to my computer to see what happened and talking about it on my morning rides.

However, some don’t think it needs to be so “spectacular”. Some of the riders in the Giro are saying that there is too much climbing and all this does is slow down and neutralise the race. I don’t think the outcome would have been any different this year if there was less climbing, but it definitely could have been a more exciting race to watch. This has to do with Contador’s domination more than anything else. Watching a battle for second is much less thrilling than watching a race for first.

Let’s compare this year’s Giro with 2010.

Contador spent over 84 hours in the saddle over the past 3 weeks and the last rider (Jos Van Emden) spent nearly 90hrs. Despite all the climbing, Contador’s winning time is less than last year when Ivan Basso won in 87:44hrs, and the last rider in 92:33hrs (Marco Corti). 2010 was 3,485km long and averaged 39.7km/hr. This year’s Giro was 3,494km long (or 3,524km, or 3,474km, depending on where you look) and averaged ~41.5km/hr. I’m not exactly sure of the vertical gain in last year’s Giro, but I roughly worked out that this year had nearly 30,000 meters of climbing. Incredible. You can see the full Giro history of times and average speeds here (although this year’s distance is in dispute). The general trend however is that it’s getting faster and faster.

The numbers don’t tell the whole story and even if this year was faster than previous editions, there was definitely less drama in the racing. Would the racing have been any more dramatic without Contador there? Possibly. Did the excessive amount of climbing play a part? It’s tough for me to say while sitting at my desk having a coffee. We’ll have to rely on the riders’ opinions on that one.

Contador has gained my respect over the past three weeks. Not only for his elegance and strength on the bike, but for his class on stage 14 and stage 19. I could do without the fingerbang antics, but I sure hope all allegations against him are proven false (beyond a reasonable doubt) very soon and we can enjoy the TdF without all the controversy.

I’d like to sincerely thank Veeral Patel for passing along his spectacular photos to us after every stage. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Veeral has been contributing since this blog started and he’s now quit is office job to pursue his dream of becoming a professional cycling photographer. After speaking with Veeral many times over the past 3 weeks, I’m pretty sure that working in his cushy cubical was much easier than this gig. He wouldn’t trade it back for anything though.

I also want to thank Cameron Meyer for contributing his daily Giro diary for us to read an inside view of the race. I still don’t understand how he finds the time or energy to do this almost every day.

I love following the Giro, but I gotta admit – I’m kinda ready to move on. I’m exhausted and I’ve only ridden about 200km’s over the past 3 weeks. These Grand Tours take their toll! I’m looking forward to talking about some other topics and getting back to the tips for the next month until the Tour. That said, I’m very excited about the Tour!

Cam’s Giro Diary

You can also follow Cam Meyer on twitter and on his facebook page

Coming soon. I’m guessing Cam is absolutely rooted at the moment after his awesome TT for 7th place yesterday.

Great pictures, CT. It has been my main way of taking in the Giro this year. I’m pumped for the Tour now.

Speaking of Le Tour, does anyone know if Richie will be doing it (i.e., the Tour) or does his inclusion in the Giro exclude him now?

Forgive my ignorance but whose the guy with the rather large biceps?

Sorry – I should have explained that in the captions. It looks like there was some sort of ride at the Giro called “the fight for pink”. That’s the jersey all the riders are wearing and I received dozens of photos of the ride. I posted 3 of them near the top. I don’t really know much else.

  • Notso Swift

2 Aussies in the TT top 10, nice work.
Only disappointment is Bertie should have slowed up a little more for Richie to get top 3

@facebook-1577957887:disqus Richie is still down for the Tour, Saxo said they were using the Giro to kick start his form (implying he was under done in the early races?), with no pressure to be there at the of each Giro stage, his job was just to be there on the flats and the Spanish Mafia would take over (He came stronge in the last week though, a good sign)

  • http://the-domestic.blogspot.com/ The Domestic

Great final stage, after 20 stages, they were still able to maintain an average speed of over 51kph on the TT – freaks! Thanks CT for the great coverage and pics.

Ah that is good reading. I thought that might have been the case for Richie. I hope he gets an opportunity to shine at the Tour. I look forward to cheering him on whilst I’m over there.

    Awesome.

Oh, and don’t like Cipo know that there is another angle or he will be off to medical school next.

I’m not a huge fan of Contador’s, but he romped this Giro in.

  • Notmillarsbestbestfriend

david millar= doping loser. he is so boring  and a outspoken hypocrite, & dresses like a goober. He is such a try hard jonathan vaughters! get some style millar you are in italia! you are not a movie star, you are a repetitive doper in cycling, wear your sponsors colours with pride on the dais, they are the ones who pay your bills (and your epo).

only good thing about millar is him dropping his chain in 2003 grand boucle prologue, leading to him losing, and mcgee winning. the other good thing was him throwing his bike away when he snapped a chain in that break during the giro a few years ago.

the giro is such a beautiful race. such a shame the tdf cant break from its template of boring as bat$hit in the first 2 weeks then mountains in the 3rd week.

wonder if contabeef will ride tdf? actually care factor, make a decision already please authorities, as i can already see the boring headlines in cyclingnews.com for the next 2 months leading into tdf about contajeuce will he/wont he ride.

I for one will be tuning into cyclingtipsblog, the best source of cycling inspiration/reading in australia each day. Love the new site by the way!

Good point regarding the distance. However, for some reason in the “Giro Times” chart that I linked to, it said that the 2011 Giro was 3,265 kms. I’m not sure where that came from

…and there was the protest (against the decision to skip the Crostis) that caused a detour which shortened the stage even more.

Love the new site, CT is the best part of my day at work…even though my IE browser errors all the time and I have to go “back” and “stop”.

Agree that Cam Meyer’s insights are a great new angle for us, but I expect he has PR support to post all the material…particularly considering the tweet on May 20 which stated he was in the break and included a photo of the TV showing him in the break.

    Hullster,

Can you let me know which IE version you’re using? I’ve heard this complaint before and kept delaying troubleshooting it because I knew I was redesigning the site and thought it might go away. It would be a good timet to get it fixed if there are a few people having this problem.

    Thanks

I’m going to start a bet going on. I will buy willing to buy the top 10 users who get their name in first, Campy Bora ultra wheels, if and only if Cadel Evans ever wins the tour. I say again, if Cadel EVER wins Le Tour, I will be buying 10 users Campy Bora ultra wheels.

  • Anonymous

i reckon theres a better chance that Cadel wins le tour than some random guy on a web forum buys me some Bora’s – but i’m willing to take the chance…

IF Contador doesnt ride i think Cadel has a very good shot, BMC look very strong, and importantly 100% behind him – i’d love to see Cadel win, more than any other rider i can think of (and i’m a pom)

Yeh mate count me in!! Go Cadel!!!

  • JBS

Interesting statement considering that Cadel is only one failed retroactive test away from being the 2007 le Tour winner (a la Oscar Pereiro)…and no, I am not suggesting that Contador doped that year (or didn’t).  Pointing out the reality, that’s all.

That said, c’mon Cadel in 2011, bring me back some Boras.

  • JBS

Great coverage as per usual CT.

  • Abdu Whereareyou

Thanks Bracksy, looking forward to those new wheels.

1.5 Schlecks and Basso are the real threat, surely a ‘supercharged’ Clenbutador can’t back up?

    Come on Cadel!!

Thanks Abdu, so the users so far to whom “I WOULD BE BUYING BORAS IF EVANS WINS”  are, “on_the_rivet”, “norbsy”, “Harry”, “JBS”, “Abdu. Still got 5 places remaining, come on people, try your luck!

I have always had trouble viewing photos, even on the old site. Mostly, only the top 1/4 or 1/3 show, if I want to see the whole picture I have to open it in a new tab, then reload. Regardles of browser (Firefox, Chrome or IE), so I figured it was just my slow connection.

Millar looking pretty sharp! Must say Contador has really impressed me throughout the Giro, not only did he give a climbing masterclass time and time again but the way he handled himself with the fans, the media and particularly with the tragic death of Tondo really struck a note with me. He has acted like a true sporting champion both on and off the bike and in my opinion has re-gained a lot of cycling fans respect in the process, regardless of what occurs ban-wise.

CT, as ever, nice work from yourself and Veeral. As an amateur photographer who has quit his day job also, but doesn’t seem to have the drive Veeral has, I am in awe of his work and his balls at getting so far, thus far. Good luck further Veeral. I am just cycling and following some races here in Europe…

As for the Giro. I was lucky enough to ride Monte Zonc and the Cima Coppi from Cortina this year and wouldn’t change it for any Tour stage. I saw the stage up MV2 (Mont Ventoux) when the TDF was already won and that was amazing. Monte Z the Giro was won. MV2 had more numbers than Monte Z, but somehow Monte Z was better. More pure cycling fans perhaps because the Giro isn’t quite as big and it is a hell of a lot harder to get to some of the stages, but the atmosphere was just different. A personal preference perhaps, but I will take the Giro.

And, when you have a dominant rider, you can only do so much. More mountains, less mountains, Conty would have destroyed the field. Like Merckx (I am not comparing their talents, just the circumstances) in the Giro, when, arguably, he was persuaded (paid) to take it easy on the rest and only won by 5 minutes befire winning the Tour by 15, it doesn’t matter what you throw at them when in form. Sometimes on just has to accept the competition is not there and watch in awe at the talent and commitment of the super riders we have in our time. We take them for granted until too late. I enjoyed Conty dancing his way to victory, while not tense, it was emphatic and inspiring. I agree, the way he did it on the stages you mentioned, and in the face of plenty of boo’s on Monte Z, was classy. Old school.

Italy. Stunning riding – especially the Dolomites. Do it if you get the chance. Giro…epic. Roll on 2012. TdF…I will be there, but I am not as excited about it as I was the Giro, personal choice, but I loved it.

Like the new site by the way sir, well done.
