Rest Day, Up Mont Ventoux

Today myself and hundreds of other cyclists made the pilgrimage up Mont Ventoux. Since the teams and many race followers are staying very close to Ventoux, it was a convenient day out. A rest day for the pros meant that us fans could spend the whole day riding without rushing back to follow the race and the see finish. I can't decide which is more tiring.

The first time I ever climbed Mount Ventoux was on February 14, 2004 – the day Marco Pantani died. I was shocked by the news and could still see faint markings on the road from Stage 12 in 2000 when he beat Armstrong up to the finish. Watching that stage was the first time I was introduced to Ventoux and have been enchanted with it ever since.

There are three ways up to the summit of Mont Ventoux. I’d done it twice from Sault, but never Bedouin. The Tour de France usually summits the mountain from Bedouin which is the most difficult way. The Tour has featured Ventoux 14 times and finished there on 8 occasions. The last time the Tour went up Mt Ventoux in 2009 and it’s estimated that more than half a million people were on the mountain that day.

You can make Mont Ventoux as hard or as easy as you want. Anyone can get to the top (which was quite evident by the hordes people out there today). It doesn’t get overly steep, but it is long. The lower treed section is the most difficult part in my opinion. It’s easy to go too hard to soon and not save enough for the final 4km.

After we climbed Ventoux my mate Trevor and I decided to go on a little adventure. A Garmin 800 adventure to be exact. I’ve been using the Garmin 800 for this entire trip and absolutely love it. However, the GPS route feature can sometimes lead you astray. As with any tool, it’s only as good as it’s operator. It’ll always get you to where you need to go, but as we found out there are sometimes many detours it takes you on just to have fun with you. I bet the Garmin engineers are having a good chuckle at that bug (or “feature” as we used to call it when I was a s/w designer).

In any case, Trevor and I had a magnificent ride through the Provence region of southern France. Mont Ventoux is nice and has lots of history, but the rest of the riding through the area is absolutely spectacular. Lavendar fields, hilltop villages, deep gorges with roads and tunnels chiseled out of the side. It was one of the most memorable days on a bike I’ve ever had. Gotta love the rest days…

Tomorrow we get to the pointy end of the Tour de France when it reaches the Alps. Can Voeckler hold on up Alpe d’huez? Will Cadel throw caution into the wind and attack?

Judging by what we’ve seen so far, my guess is that we’ll see the winner in Paris emerge as the rider who doesn’t crack and has a good TT in Grenoble, versus the rider who decimates the field with a single blow. It’s going to be an exciting week ahead!

Start Altitude (Bedoin) : 290m
Vertical Ascent : 1610 m
Average gradient : 7.5 %
Maximum gradient : 12.0 %

- The fastest time recorded up Mt Ventoux from the Bedouin side was Iban Mayo in the 2004 Dauphiné Libéré. He did it in 55′ 51″. Trained amateurs will climb to the summit in 1’30″.

- Mont Ventoux was systematically deforested from the 12th century onwards for the shipbuilders of the naval port of Toulon.

- Ventoux is French for or ‘wind’. It can certainly get windy at the summit. Wind speeds as high as 320 km/h have been recorded and the wind blows at 90+ km/h 240 days a year. The three times I’ve climbed Mont Ventoux, there’s hardly been a breath of wind.

    Whenever I see Mont Ventoux, I think of that guy from Melbourne who rode it on a fixed gear bike. His blog was called “When I ride my bike, I feel like a Kid” or some such name. That’s how I feel when I see these pictures. A 30 year old kid.

    Anyone? With all due respect, you and I both know that is a bucket load of bollocks! :)   21km at 7.5% would kick my fat arse, that’s for sure and certain. That said, I would give it a red hot go. But I know plenty of people who cant get up 1km of 5%, let alone 21km of steeper roads.

    For all those who doubt me, please feel free to send me across to give it a go. ;)

    I very much loved this post, especially after having climbed Mt Ventoux last month for the first time (I chickened out and went from Sault;)
    Wonderful photos as well ; being a photographer, my only regret was to not have my photo gear with me on the climb… but then again, had I taken it, I would probably have cursed it all the way up to the summit :)
    The descent down to Bedouin was scary, but very exciting… my only worry was that the glue of my tubulars would start melting with too much braking :/
    The speed can easily reach more than 75Km/h in the treed section…

    One small correction: contrary to common belief, “ventoux” has no connexion with “venteux” which is translated into windy. Most people associate both words, because the wind blows quite violently over the mountain, but the etymology of Ventoux is now well established and is interpreted as “the mountain that can be seen from afar”.

    With low enough gearing you can haul yourself up a cliff with one finger.

    Seriously, if you’re a recreational rider struggling to get up hills, gear your bike lower. 

    I’ve seen people doing the Alpine Classic fighting a 39/25 all the way up Buffalo in the hot afternoon sun.  Fit your bike with a compact crank and a 28 at the back and life becomes a whole lot easier.

    And if that’s not enough, Shimano still makes road triples, and SRAM has the Apex rear derailleur.

    Why people make life hard for themselves I’ll never understand. If Contador uses a compact crank when the going gets really steep, that’s good enough for me.

    I rode it for the first time 2 weeks ago, and apart from it being a fantastic climb, I think it is the history of the mountain that makes it so special. While I was slogging away, I couldn’t help but picture the epic battles that have occurred on those slopes – the same slopes I was now riding on.

    Just a pity about those damn flies, or was it just my sweaty body they were after?

    Lovely scenery Wade, but i but 99% of the readers (or guys) wouldnt be able to agre with you about the steep hill you and trevor were climbing to the little village as they all got stuck on his legs…. another weird thing i have to explain to my parents when my partner is more impressed with a cyclist’s legs then mine!!

Terror as you get lifted laterally 5m and ditched into the rubble. Memorable. Also known as “the mountain that …ken pops out of a big white ..ken cloud from ..ken nowhere “.

    Hey Wade ,
    Made my treck up the Ventoux from Bedoin 2weeks ago (06 july 2011) started at 6′o clock sharp from Bedoin village center, 5k out of the village i get up on my pedals for the first time and my wheel makes a creecking sound an then plawng broken rear spoke , thats what you get for beeing almost 100 kg,  while climbing i got overtaken by only 4 other cyclists and saw less than 10 going down while climing so not much people on the hill that early in the morning , midway thru the forest i heard a wild roaring sound from below getting closer when the sound was really close i made sure to be well on the side of the road and there it was a Porsche cabrio going pedal to the metal volle gas up the hill what a sight. I arrived at chalet renard befor i knew it but then you get to see the top of the hill wich for me was harder that going from corner to corner in the forest . Got a bit extatic motivating myself and feelnig allready at the top as this was the first ascent of a mountain except for the hill in the ronde van vlaanderen wich hardly qualify as hills anyway. at the first bend after chalet the sun started to reach over the peak of the mountain and you could feel the temperature gong up fast , made use of every bit of shadow i could get . reaching to 50m before the last bend to the top i got intense cramps in my legs but no way that was gonna stop me , i got up on my pedals pushed squares left right left right , last corner last push and there i was atop the fabeled Ventoux , carpark empty no stands no nothing except a random other belgian i didnt know who was kind enough to take my picture next to the 1912m sign . my first mountain conquered not a cloud in the sky to be seen and no wind . Needless to say i bombed down the hill reaching speeds at over 80km/h with a grin from ear to ear and shouting out my stoke and motivating every one i saw climbing up …Wade great pictures way better than the ones i took going down keep  up the good work , i look forward to reading your blog every day.

    I rode up the Ventoux in ’89, and at the time I thought the name meant ‘always windy’.  It certainly was that day – estimated 35knot (70km/h) cross wind gusts above the tree line.  I was getting blown completely across the road, while cars waited patiently behind for a safe time to overtake.  Then they’d call out ‘courage!’ as they went past. 
    I rode up from Malaucene, where I’d camped under the stars, and could see the summit from my sleeping bag.  I didn’t know that the classic ascent was from the other side – there wasn’t so much good info around in those days. 
    It took me 2’20″ to get up, non-stop.  In my defence, I was riding a fully-loaded touring bike.
    It remains one of the best days of my life.
